Just some Draft reading. Not that it means much. I am not real Pronman or Wheeler fans even though they are the most publicized. I don't mind Peters especially when it comes to US prospects. Bob well his list is always la creme de la creme and that is pretty universally recognized. Button is worth a look.

Anyone know why NHL draft is being held next Wed/Thurs? it’s been a Friday/Sat (usually this weekend) for as long as I can recall

I thought I heard it was simply scheduling venue or something like that. I wanna say I heard them discuss it on 32Thoughts that Nashville couldn't do it that way, and this was the best alternative.

Sorry for vague response, but I just remember the conversation, but not complete details.

Outside of DBC, does anyone see any realistic sens trades going down at the draft?

It's unreal how similar Ziemmer looks like Batherson on the ice. Stylistically they are incredibly close:

Would love to take a flyer on him if we acquire a late-1st/early-2nd. If the skating improves he's an NHLer and a good one at that.

I'm guessing the Habs are hoping one of the top Cs drop so they can add someone behind Suzuki

Hopefully it doesn't happen...

Have any of you watched Fantilli, Carlsson, Smith?

Fantilli looked Beniers-esque to me in the WJC and clips I've seen, the others I have no knowledge of.

Maybe Formenton for a mid round pick.

Could see Brannstrom dealt for a day 2 pick as well if they re-sign Hamonic.
I hate the idea of dealing Brann. He's been steadily improving and i think he'll slow walk his way into being a cheap reliable 2nd pairing option for most of his career.

This is when teams fleece us -- when our GM fails to reset expectations on a guy that is progressing into a useful player (just not the player we had hoped for).

Fantilli will be a much better player than Beniers will be. I’d be shocked if Carlsson was available for the habs. Smith could be, but keep hearing him connected to SJ.

Ultimately, I think habs take Michkov.

Just reading the NHL draft preview from the hockey news.
In the team reports section on Ottawa, under long term needs, written by Jared Clinton he says, lol, ( long time subscriber but not familiar with him.)

The Senators need to find a first line centre.
For all his upside Batherson hasn’t convinced he can be the pivot the Senators need to be a contender. Perhaps they look outside the organization.
Looks like an excellent candidate for The Hockey Writers Team!

Well, they already have Chabot, Sanderson & Chychrun in their top 4 who are all left shots & Kleven is a left shot. We also have Zub, Hamonic, JBD, Thomson & Guennette who are right shots & Chychrun likely starts the yr on the right side until their is an injury. They have plenty of depth on both sides on defence, plus there are a few other guys they might go to in an emergency in Aspirot LD, Larsson LD & Matinpalo RD & Larsson has NHL experience.
Has UFA Hamonic signed for 2023-24?

NHL Awards Pre-Show in Nashville now on NHL Network. Just interviewed Gabe Perreault. Not sure if they have any more draft coverage coming.

I wonder if we cant deal our 4th round pick for a useful bottom six player.

Just trade the remaining picks. They're almost certainly worthless.

You listed six picks out of about 120 we've had in those rounds. These guys represent like 1 out of every 20 picks. I'd rather take the 20 useful bottom six players over one Mike Hoffman and 19 missed picks.

Trade away, cap'n.

From 2008-2019 the Sens have picked from the 4th-7th 47 times. They've had guys play 100+ games in the NHL 12/47 times, which is better than the expected return from a 2nd/3rd round pick.

The have drafted:
Ryan Dzingel
JG Pageau
Mark Stone
Mark Borowieki
Drake Batherson
Mike Hoffman
Chris Wideman
Marcus Sorenson
Fredrick Claesson
Ben Harpur
Derek Grant
Mark Kastelic

I've looked at the picks we've made. There's only a handful of times where the player turns out more valuable than a typical return for a 4th round pick.

I'm fine with dealing those picks to bolster the bottom six / bottom pairing.

The point is that you never know where the next star will come from. while most 1st rd picks are expected to make the NHL there are plenty of examples of misses in the 1st/2nd 3rd rds as well. It's a crap shoot & you hope that you hit more often than miss but every team in every draft win some & lost some.
