New ownership NEEDS, absolutely NEEDS, to invest in scouting in Russia.
I remember saying a few years ago, you need to invest in that area for the 2nd-7th rounds. That’s where you get legitimate difference makers for 4-5 years down the line.
That’s the expected time frame for a 2nd round pick anyways, being able to grab a guy like Marchenko or Dorofeyev pays dividends down the line, rather than wasting it on another USHL or CHL long shot.
2018 as a quick example, we took Tychonik at 48, which was considered a smart and good pick, hindsight not withstanding. Columbus stepped up to the podium and took Marchenko the next pick, who is paying huge dividends now. Would we have picked him with a presence in Russia? Of course we may not have, but we have zero chance with our process as is, it’s eliminating one of the best pools at post 1st round success.
Dorofeyev should have been a top 20 pick regardless, but with the Russia situation fell into the mid 3rd. We don’t even have a chance at getting these guys, it’s a gigantic hindrance to the drafting process.
Nikishkin was a top talent in 2020, again falling until the 3rd. Now probably a top 3 league wide D prospect who will step in and be a difference maker immediately.
Chibrikov looks great, was rated as a top 20 player, and went the pick directly after….Ben Roger.
The Sens need to get back into the fold with MHL/VHL players. They‘ve never drafted a player out of either league, which have been around since 2009. Haven’t drafted out of Russia since 2005.
The next few drafts they have limited picks, and very few/no high ones. They should be utilizing the talent that is being overlooked on a yearly basis.
