There's an abundance of right handed defenseman with size who can skate, transition the puck in the face of pressure, support the offense with a heavy shot while also providing high value defensively?
I think it's fair to say high end forwards are harder to find later in the draft than high end defensemen.

Smith will go top 4. It's gonna come down to whether we have the balls to take Michkov
I was reading the Sharks' equivalent thread and some guys there really saw a trend last year, whereas whenever they had the opportunity to draft a kid from the Boston area, they basically did. I have no intention to verify if that's true. Honestly I'd be ecstatic.

How difficult it is to project Ds. 2008 was arguably the best draft for D. It was all about comparing Ds.. The only can’t miss D was Doughty, aka as sure thing as Pronger. He’s the only one that was properly evaluated.j

Possibly, but either way, I haven't seen anyone posit anyone not in the consensus top 5 that everyone agrees is a high end forward
Picking a forward at 5OA you have good odds that he’ll end up close to the 5th best player in the draft. We know for a fact scouts can’t properly evaluate a player like Reinbacher.

I think the only thing you can be sure of is that he’ll be a bona fide NHL roster D, probably worth a First Round pick or an early second round pick. Too many intangibles and too long of a learning curve to know more.

Cutter Gauthier, Kent Johnson, Alex Turcotte, Barrett Hayton, Elias Pettersson, Michael Dal Colle, Elias Lindholm, Ryan Strome, Nino Niederreiter, and Brayden Schenn were the last 10 forwards taken at 5OA. Pettersson for sure is in the top 5 of his class, Gauthier/Johnson look good but it's too early to say, and I wouldn't argue too hard if you want to put Elias Lindholm in the top 5, but he doesn't really blow you away either and it's tough to separate his "breakout" from the Gaudreau effect. Everyone else is definitely outside the top 5 in their draft class.

There's uncertainty with every prospect. These are 17/18 year olds being drafted based on what we hope they become at 22 or 25. I don't really find this a very convincing reason to pass on Reinbacher given the list of names I just posted for forwards that have gone 5th overall, and we have Turcotte for a very recent example of a NTDP C that didn't live up to the hype.

If you prefer Smith that's fine, I just don't really agree with these arguments that assert there's some level of "certainty" to him that we're leaving on the table. I think that's just a completely false premise. Particularly if we're talking about "a player like Reinbacher", because I don't really know what that's supposed to mean. Again, the points, the tools, the TOI are all there, it's not like this is some hidden gem kind of prospect with 4 points in his draft year where 10 different things need to break his way for him to pan out.

Only Roman Josi played full time against men in this list. Funny enough he played in the same league as Reinbacher and posted similar stats in his D+1 season.

Sure - but you need the Connor Bedard first still. You don't draft a Leonard when you can get a Michkov. You draft Leonard after you already have the Michkov.
But what if you pick a Michkov but you never actually receive the Michkov

I don't think this is true, at all.

Looks like McCagg doesn’t think Carlsson should be picked 2-3 or 4

Sweden out before the medal rounds with Carlsson as 1C

GeorgeLeafer type analysis:
- 3G with a SH% of 25%, unsustainable
- 33% of his goals were on the PP, powerplay specialist
- 2A, not using his linemates enough, not a C

HFHabs, initiate slander campaign so he drops at 5 o_O

for the record, I really like Michkov and would probably take him at 5, but I don’t think people are being honest with themselves when they say they can live with it if he never comes over.

I’m not saying he won’t come over, but if he doesn’t it won’t exactly be out of the blue lol, the warning signs are there.

Outside of Michkov, I really love Reinbacher. Having a D core of Guhle, Reinbacher, Hutson and Mailloux has the potential to be extremely, extremely good.

I do think we need a forward more, but damn I wish we could grab Reinbacher + Michkov/Smith lol
