No thanks as a first round draft pick. Sign that guy for cheap. Need to target game changers with high picks.
Sometimes you need to draft guys that allow your game changers to be game changers more often too just saying

It’s based off of, for the most part, an unrealistic sim as well so it’s just how that scenario played out

23. New York Rangers (Pick by Wheeler): Calum Ritchie, C, Oshawa

The Rangers have drafted wingers with their last five top picks. They go for a natural center here and take Ritchie, a committed two-way player with skill and size.

Ritchie had a good U18 for Canada.

Ritchie is not too dissimilar to Othmann: top-2 OHL draft pick with a big bantam pedigree, inconsistent draft year with flashes of brilliance there, and a projectable size/skill combo

I like him a lot and think he’s one of those guys that will translate well because of how skilled he is in tight and he can navigate through and make plays through traffic. A lot of his game is high percentage, but the only thing that’s gonna hold him back is consistency. It’s gonna either help him push that top-line ceiling or keep him perpetually in that 3C/W mold

If Ritchie makes it to 23, just know that his stock has significantly dropped

Ritchie would have been ranked a lot higher if he was more consistent, for sure. I think fans will eat him a live here if he forces passes like he was doing instead of taking the shot. I would also prefer if he had a quicker step. I'm just so over average skating..

It's just a very good draft.

Ritchie is projected as a top 20 pick. The Rangers are at #23.
that’s part of it but, Ritchie was a guy that had a chance at top 10/15, and many didn’t like the season that he had. Not sure if I’d go that direction. He didn’t take a leap and we haven’t exactly been able to unlock guys like that. Questions about consistency. Depends on what else was on the board though I guess?

It’s also that time of year where everyone is overreacting to the WJCs, which is why you have draft writers like Pronman suddenly moving someone like Willander into his top-10. A lot of the stuff that’s gonna come out in the next two months is gonna be heavily skewed by the WJCs and Memorial Cup

I wouldn't hate that, but if the draft falls the way it did on this mock I don't know how NYR can pass up Sale. NYR c depth is set for a while at the NHL level, at most they have 3 more years of CK, Panarin, etc.. and wouldn't hurt to have a potential top 6 LW prospect a few years away.

NHL level center depth is never a reason to not take a center. Good centers are harder to get than good wingers.

That’s fair too. I think people are going to be really weird about dmen this draft though. I don’t think it’s a great d year and some GMs are going to chase them. I’d prefer if the Rangers were not one of them. Way too much forward talent

Yeah, I'm in the same boat there. I think there are definitely some good dmen in this draft, especially as we move into the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but I want to add another forward to the prospect pool. I trust the Rangers to develop dmen more than I do forwards, so I think they need more kicks at the can there.

I'd guess Drury and Liley are probably heavily looking into the USNTDP/USHLand WHL this year based on their recent drafting histories and some of the player connections to our system. I like a lot of the talent coming from those leagues in this draft.
Matthew Wood is cementing his status as my draft crush

He's been a huge riser up draft boards, and I bet teams are thinking that if they can fix his skating, they'll have their own version of a Tage Thompson. The skating is a huge concern though, but I think he'll eventually grow out of it. He's got absolutely sick hands in tight

Trade down and get me perron and kantserov 😁

first sim of the year...
I keep mocking something similar but I have very little faith that Musty and Ziemmer will be available in that range. If I knew for sure they would be I pull the trigger right now.

I would also really love to find a way into the second round without having to trade the first. Hoping that Goodrow has more value than some of us think, or that Drury has some other tricks up his sleeve.

Yeah Musty in the 40s would be great value. Esp. since i'd say there's a good chance he goes mid-late 20s
