I think we will draft a Dman most likely at #23 spot, but after trading away Buch and Kravtsov there is no way we draft a Russian and no way we draft a small Dman.

This guy looks pretty good:

what does Buch have to do with it? Kravtsov was a bust. Different management and different scouting staffs. This will have ZERO bearing on the draft.

Gulyaev talent is somewhere in between Hughes and Makar. His skating is disgusting. It'd be an absolute steal if we landed him with our 1st pick. My hope is the Russian Factor makes him fall to us. If he was North American, he'd be a top5 pick

I agree but they won’t take a Russian.

It just is what it is.

that'd be a catastophic failure on the org's part.

Taking a riser because of a big Playoffs #9 is not the same as taking a top5 talent #23. He's easily the best talent in the later 1st. It's not even close.

This is assuming he even falls to us. I can see Guerin taking him before us

Man. I am on board with this pick too. I really wish we had a second though. Can’t decide if I’d prefer this kid or Brindley OR something like this if we trade down:

I feel like the rankings on this site are a bit odd though so I don’t know how realistic it is for some of these guys to be around in the early-mid second.

I wouldnt be surprised if he got snapped up by Yzerman.

I'm with you though. I'm not bothered by his size or his defense (where he already shows some positive instincts), if you have that kind of escapability you're going to be tough to pin in.

But the Rangers have always operated that way. Plus I dont know what his contract status is in Russia.

If we had a 2nd i'd take him in the 2nd round, but I don't want to waste our 1st on him. Players much better than him will drop at 23.
maybe, but this guy seems, like he will have no difficulty transitioning to NHL.

the reason Buchnevich was dumped is someone maybe Drury doesn't seem to like Russians.

If Michkov falls or Gulyayev is available will say a lot about Chris Drury the man. You take the best talent to help win and not someone lesser.

This pick isn't going to be part of the core until at least 2025 or 2026. They can wait. Michkov coming over to replace a Panarin and play with a McDavid or Matthews....what's wrong with that?

Michkov and Gulyayev aren't close to the same tier though. Michkov still being there at 5 would be insane and the Sharks would be idiots to pass.

3 Drafts on Draftsim

Draft 1- No Trades. Limited talent at F available around our picks, going by Draftsim rankings. All 3 Dmen are 6'2" or taller, and at least 170lbs. Oldest player is Simashev (Feb 2005), so in theory all should have more runway to grow.
23- LD Dmitriy Simashev (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, KHL)
91- C Kalle Carlsson (Orebro HK J20, J20 Nationell)
178- RD Carter Sotheran (Portland Winterhawks, WHL)
183- LD Emil Pienniemi (Karpat U20, U20 SM-sarja)

Draft 2- 23 & 91 to DET for 41, 42, 43. Lots more F heavy this time (and i don't just mean Finns lol). I particularly like getting Musty here, i think he's a 1st round guy. He and Halttunen are both a bit raw, but they're big AND quick
41- LW Quentin Musty (Sudbury Wolves, OHL)
42- RW Lemmi Hameenaho (Assat, Liiga)
43- RW Kasper Halttunen (HIFK, Liiga)
178- C Tom Leppa (Jokerit U20, U20 SM-sarja)
183- Emil Pienniemi (Karpat U20, U20 SM-sarja)

Draft 3- 23 & 91 to ANA for 33, 59, 60, 65, 161.
33- C Danny Nelson (US NTDP)
59- LW Noah Dower-Nilsson (Frolunda HC J20, J20 Nationell)
60- RW Jesse Kiiskinen (Pelicans U20, U20 SM-sarja)
65- C Oscar Fisker-Molgaard (HV71, SHL)
161- LD Luke Coughlin (Rimouski Oceanic, QMJHL)
178- LD Marc-Olivier Beaudry (Drummondville Oceanic, QMJHL)
183- LW Joe Connor (Avon Old Farms School, USHS-Prep)

Im on board with Gulyaev too. No way we get that lucky though.

I don't think we'll have a chance to draft him, but I think someone like Connor Levis would be a good pick if he's still available in the third round. He'll be more in the spotlight during this Memorial Cup run, but he's been buried in Kamloops' lineup behind their top guys, but similar to McConnell-Barker, should see a big uptick in usage next year.

He's grown nicely as a prospect over the last two years after being an absolute string bean that was very awkward as a player on the ice. I don't know why he's listed as a C since he's primarily been a RW, but he has underrated playmaking skills and has a plus shot. His skating has improved year-by-year too as he's matured physically. If I had to guess, Dallas takes him with their 2nd rounder since they've had a ton of success drafting out of Kamloops with Stankoven and Seminoff

Craig Button loves this player. Button compared Shah-lah to Pastrnak. Other teams have asked Button about his love for Sale.

If we get Eduard Šalé at 23 (which is our pick after Florida reached the ECF) I will do f***ing cartwheels. That's on the same level as getting Sýkora at 63.

I wouldn't go quite *THAT* far. But only b/c Sykora was my pre-draft crush lol. Funnily enough Miller and Berard were my other 2 big ones in previous years, and we've drafted all 3 of them

Sykora's the definition of "player you win with"
Berard I felt was gonna get underdrafted b/c of his size (and i'd argue he did)
Miller there was some Corey Snzajder graphic that went around about his elite transition defense (like 95th percentile in basically everything), and that had me intrigued.
(i also wanted Lundkvist, but that was more so we could have all 3 of Lundqvist, Lindqvist, and Lundkvist on the ice at the same time. Alas, twas not to be lmao)

Athletic Mock 2.0 is out and has us drafting Calum Ritchie, C, Oshawa

“The Rangers have drafted wingers with their last five top picks. They go for a natural center here and take Ritchie, a committed two-way player with skill and size.”

I haven’t even been considering him because I can’t imagine he will be available at 23, but if he is, please run up to the podium and make sure he’s the pick.

For me, my order of preference is as follows:

Sale > Gulyayev > Brindley > trade down for multiple seconds.

Do not take a “defensive” defenseman.
Do not take anyone for whom skating isn’t a strength.
Do not take a goalie in the first three rounds.

Ritchie would be an ok pick.

I don't see the need for a smaller offensive defenseman in Gulyayev.

His skating is great, yeah, but I just don't see the need. Fox, Miller and Jones even.

Usually improves once McKenzie’s list comes out and you can use that to draft off of

Simashev sounds like a possible Fox partner down the road or just a steady reliable partner regardless of who he’s paired with
