Pre-Game Talk: 2023 Draft Discussion

Rasmus Kumpulainen - Shift by Shift. 6'3 Finnish forward (specifically, he played center, but as we have seen positions can be fluid and just stay general).

He was teammates with Kings prospect Aatu Jamsen last season.

It's going to be a long off season, with the early playoff exit and not having a 1st rounder.

But seeing either Vegas or Seattle in the Cup Finals could be fun.

given small sample size but there's something "professional" about the way he plays

For reference, that game is from the U20 SM-sarja league. The Finnish scout I spoke to for clarification said it's similar to the BCHL, so it's like minor junior hockey in quality.

Jakub Dvorak has all the makings of Erik Cernak 2.0.. he should be available around our 2nd pick and would be a nice start to the draft.. assuming that the only 2nd we have, you’d have to think some guys might be on the way out

Edit… FIRE TODD if not, FIRE BLAKE for not firing Todd.. if not, FIRE LUC for not firing Blake for not firing Todd!!! … or just fire them all and clean house!!!

I'm a fan but with his skillset he's basically a surefire 2nd/3rd pairing defense first guy or a total bust. Hard to say which. You're not getting any notable offense from him, but if he can at least move the puck without being a liability, I'd love him.

Does he have any balls?

Honestly, yes but not consistently yet.. guy is super responsible and physical but his edginess comes and goes. But he sure as hell ain’t scared to throw the body around and with maturity he’s going to be a pain in the ass on D

Danny Nelson video. Probably won't fall to the Kings, but very intriguing. On top of his size (6'2), he's one of those players who started out at forward, was moved to play defense, then moved to play forward again. You can see the way he hangs back in the blueline or how quickly he covered a defenseman who moved out of position.

So the Athletic did a 2 round mock draft with Pronman and Wheeler alternating picks. With the 54th pick Pronman has the Kings picking Jakub Dvorak. He’s a 6’5” 203lbs LHD, played in men’s league in Czechia.

Hockey writers profile says boring but effective, physical but disciplined. Sounds like what they’ve been missing on the left, especially with all the skill they have on the right.

And now I see @kings11 has already talked about him. Good job on already calling that.

I like him. I'm pissed I was never able to get some game video myself. Thankfully there's video by other people available.

Dvorak looks like exactly what we need and more like him. His speed can be improved upon and hes a defenseman fir chriss sakes who cares if he can score

Great pic at 54. I don't think he will make it to 54 though. The Kings will have to move up into the mid 40's to get him. Hope it happens regardless. Though, I still think the Kings will be selecting a 5'11 - 6'1 average skating forward who they had pegged for a mid 30's pick and falls, but doesn't play a physical game, sort of like last year.

I have a work related question for you, is it hard for you to be excited with the Kings missing picks this draft ?
Yes but maybe not for the reason you think. I actually love learning about the draft and writing content. When higher picks are gone, there's a much wider net of players I need to get to know. But, during the year, articles about less hyped players are scarce. So, it's just difficult to do a deep dive into the players to be compiled into an interesting article.

So, I still get excitement for the draft, even with high picks missing. But it begins as frustration, if that makes sense.

It was kind of a relief to have the first round pick gone at the trade deadline instead of draft day last year though. It sucked doing a deep dive on several first round prospects, and getting excited about different ones for various reasons, only to see that none would be picked.
