Got an updated ranking from Bob McKenzie (only a top 12 but I’ll take it)

Now has Smith at #3

Very interesting.

NHL scouts are on my side with Dvorsky lol.
Perreault has solidified himself as a top 15 guy at least.

Would be kind of disappointing if that is how the top 8 plays out and we are picking 9.

Hopefully Benson slides 1 more spot and we get him in that case, although I wonder if our scouting staff would be as high on him.

If the board goes this way I would go with 1 of the 3 guys he has 10-12 or I would consider Sale. Could see our scouts really liking either Barlow or Reinbacher.

Also Benson at 8 and Perreault at 9 goes with what I have been saying. I really don't think there is that big of a gap between them. Similar upside and similar risk. Although I do think Benson is a bit more complete of a player. @Ed Ned and Leddy

I want Benson off the board before we need to pick. My conviction level in making a decision about him is very low. He could be awesome or super mediocre as an NHLer. Floor feels lower than a lot want to admit. He is a really awesome junior player though.

Benson reminds me of Cole Perfetti in 2020 if Cole Perfetti was an above average skater. I have him a good 7 spots above Perreault on my board.

I think they’re both average skaters. Perreault actually reminds me of Perfetti, I think I am fans of both for similar reasons.

Well NHL scouts disagree with you on them not being close :)

For those of you that are lazy -
1. Bedard
2. Fantilli
3. Smith
4. Carlsson
5. Michkov
6. Dvorsky
7. Leonard
8. Benson
9. Perreault
10. Reinbacher
11. Barlow
12. Wood

I'd been holding out hope for one of Dvorsky or Leonard. This list really throws a wrench in my dreams there.

I put way less stock in the U18s for team USA this year. Piling on points against Norway, Latvia and Switzerland is not that impressive to me.

Perreault and Smith were fantastic down the stretch. Not just the U18s. Pretty much everyone has had them gradually going up their lists. If you want to dig your heels in and not give credit to players that are playing well, go ahead.

I have gradually improved Leonard, Wood, and Reinbacher throughout the year as they have continued to play well and impress me.

Open your mind up, Ogee.

I heard that Sale has consistency and hard work problem , don't see him as Red Wings

I wouldn't be mad at those choices, but there are a couple I like much more than the others.

After seeing Carlsson with Berggren and Raymond makes me think we need to rig this lotto.

How does one go about rigging a lotto?
Curl up with Bettman late at night whispering sweet nothings about Arizona. "It's your biggest success Betsy." And so on and so forth.

I have. I like Perreault but he's not in my top 10. I have him in the 13-15 range. Benson is 7 to 10 for me.

As for Smith, he didn't do anything at the U18s that I didn't expect him to but the same parts of his game that I'm not a fan of were on display. Him at 3 over Carlsson and Michkov is crazy talk.

Ok, 13-15 for Perreault is not too bad at all. Wasn't sure bc I have not seen a ranking from you in a minute.

I agree with you that Smith over Carlsson is silly. Although @jaster tried telling us about Carlsson being #4. Was not sure he had NHL contacts like that.

Reinbacher would be a nice consolation price, if Dvorsky is taken already. D corps would be ready for years to come.

Definitely not interested in Michkov under the current circumstances, too much uncertainty on ETA. Unless Michkov falls to #17/18, but it's way unrealistic. I could see Caps being most interested, maybe they think that Ovy can use his influence to get him overseas sooner.

Take Benson and Edstrom with our first round, let both of them play for Frolunda next season . Get Unger Sorum with one of the second round

Is it legal for NHL teams to buy a KHL player out of their contract? I know Carolina was attemping to do it with Alexander Nikishin but haven't seen anything regarding that since February.

He definitely feels boom or bust, but so do a lot of these kids this year. Probably more than other drafts.

The path I laid out for Carlsson going 4 was specifically Chicago selecting 3rd and taking Michkov. Smith as 3 over Carlsson, in general, is certainly an interesting wrinkle.

Either way, if there's one thing Bob McKenzie and I have in common, it's that we're silly.

but again, this is 0% Bob McKenzie's opinions and just a survey of scouts.

Did Wood play C at all this year? Curious if he projects as a C.
I kinda cool on him after u18. He was not bad , but I expected him playing center and coach never used him like that

Have no idea how you guys see Benson as a bust, as long as he is not rushed , he will be fine .

I agree with you 100% but at #9 overall that’s a risk I like for this Wings team, personally. I don’t see another player available in that range I like *so much* that the risk of Benson gets me too squeamish.

Especially if Yzerman’s plan is to use each of these picks we’ve accumulated, I think we’re well positioned for this kind of pick. I definitely see where he (and Perreault) have a lot of traits that don’t always translate up from juniors though.

Would be kind of disappointing if that is how the top 8 plays out and we are picking 9.

Hopefully Benson slides 1 more spot and we get him in that case, although I wonder if our scouting staff would be as high on him.

Yeah I hear you on this. The difference in value between the players probably doesn’t justify any maneuvering, but I do prefer Benson.

Gut tells me we walk out of the draft without either player though if I’m honest.
