Would people be interested in a series of threads with polls asking our board if they would be happy/upset with different players at picks #9 and #17 and allow us to have some discussion on individual prospects?

Or would that be overkill with the amount of new threads we have?

I think this was brought up in another thread, but Elite Prospects had Gracyn Sawchyn was up the rankings.

Right handed C, elite speed and skating skill. I could be convinced, would love him in the second round.

Basically, Yzerman has to get a right handed C this year IMO.
For this guy id trade up, late first

It will be nice

It would be the ultimate high risk high reward move that the wings could really use to get that elite forward theyre missing.

Woulda kinda suck though waiting for if he'll ever come over or not
I have significant concerns about if/when he could come over. But if he falls and Detroit takes him, I'd have to believe it's because the Wings have a plan to assist his international travel sooner than later.

I was listening to a podcast with Craig Button on it and he said he expects Cristall and Heidt to get picked outside the first round from talking to people around the league.

I’d be very happy with getting one of those two with our second rounders.
The fact Button said that, makes me think we need to grab Heidt at 17, because Craig is nothing if not inaccurate with his predictions

I'd be game to vote.

EDIT: or maybe a "who's going at nine and seventeen" vote.

There are bunch of players id take before Heidt at 17, you trade up for him or Sawchyn or Musty

I guess it's just a model running off league stats so it's not like any real effort is being spent on these guys but there's something funny to me about ranking 5340 prospects when only 225 will be drafted

You're not wrong but the algorithm must not screw around because a 4'11" and 99 lbs kid is also 1000% dead last on my rankings. I don't need to see anything else really.

I'm trying to imagine someone that size in an NHL game and it's kinda like picturing that South Park episode.

JFresh just published their latest prospect rankings.

I have never liked of their data-based ranking system for prospects, maybe it's tweaked a bit lately. It just seems more reasonable this year vs. past.

1. LhW Matvei Michkov, 100%(1st) / 100% (2nd) (percentage of becoming NHL star / percentage of becoming NHLer)
2. RhC Connor Bedard, 100% (2nd) / 100% (1st)
3. LhC Adam Fantilli, 95% (3rd) / 100% (3rd)
4. LhC Leo Carlsson, 91% (4th) / 100% (4th)
5. RhD David Reinbacher, 66% (5th) / 99% (5th)
6. RhC Will Smith, 62% (6th) / 96% (6th)
7. LhW Gabe Perreault, 49% (7th) / 93% (7th)
8. LhW Andrew Cristall, 45% (8th) /84% (13th)
-------------------------------
9, LhF Zach Benson, 41% (9th) / 84% (12th)
10. RhF Matthew Wood, 37% (10th) / 87% (10th)
11. LhC Dalibor Dvorsky, 35% (11th) / 87%
12. RhD Lukas Dragicevic, 26% / 92%
13. LhW Quentin Musty, 31% (12th) / 88% (9th)
14. LhW Eduard Sale, 29% (13th) / 77% (14th)
15. LhF Riley Heidt, 22% (15th) / 65% (17th)
16. RhW Koehn Ziemmer, 22% (16th) / 64% (19th)
----------------------------------
17. LhW Colby Barlow, 19%(17th) / 65% (16th)
18. LhD Mikhail Gulyayev, 8% (25th) / 67% (15th)
19. RhC Ryan Leonard, 16% (18th) / 58% (21st)
20. RhC Nate Danielson, 15% (19th) / 46% (25th)
21. LhC Samuel Honzek, 9% (22nd) / 58% (20th)
22. RhW Daniil But, 11% (21st) / 55% (24th)

Their model definitely likes Reinbacher, playing well on a men's league. Same comes for Michkov. What he is doing at Russia, is far more impressive than what Bedard is doing at juniors. Both absolutely great talents.

I think the whole Top4 would beat 1st overalls from last 2 drafts. If Reinbacher would fall to 9th, that would seem to be heck of a steal. Basicly you could get 2nd overall level of player at different draft year.

I have a really tough time taking that model at all seriously for Defensemen ever since I noticed a couple years ago that like half of their top 10 Defensemen were guys that didn't even end up getting drafted at all

it was the Edvinsson year I think, lots of guys ranked above him in that model who didn't end up even getting drafted

Yeah, I remember same kind of things. And William Eklund being the superior 1st overall.

But this is not same kind of mess anymore. Just one rank in the mix as any other.

The OHL isn't looking too great this season. Kind of makes me want to focus our picks more on the WHL and in Sweden this draft.

I still think Ritchie would be a good target if they stay at 17. I feel like he's been his best against better competition and when he can play with decent players. I liked him in the Hlinka, Top Prospects game and at the u18s, even though he was clearly injured by then. I liked Barlow most of the year as well, but have cooled some on him. I'm basically with you as far as taking him closer to 17 rather than 9, so it would probably have to be one or the other with that 2nd 1st rounder.

I'll second this.

Been watching some Simashev tape, a guy that big who skates that well is rare. I know I said no D in the first but he's my guy at 17 if we go D.

Also intrigued by Whitelaw. He might be there for us in the second round.

Whitelaw has improved a lot during the year. He used to tunnel vision a lot and try to do everything by himself. It's much better now but he's still somewhat of a selfish player. I still like him though and would be happy to add him. High upside.

Red Wings has drafted at least 2 players every year from USHL since 2019. Mastrosimone and Phillips in 2019. Stange, Aucoin and Bradley in 2020. Mazur and Buium in 2021 and James & Mehlenbacher 2022. 9 players in total and Ali who went to play in USHL.

2008-2018 Red Wings drafted 7 players from USHL. Nicastro, Jensen, Mckee, Pearson, Petruzelli, Adams, O'Reilly and 2 players who went to play in USHL, Marshall & Holway.

10 players in last 4 years and Holland selected 9 players during a 10 year period. Quite a change, Yzerman must like USHL as developmental ground. It's quite safe to say that we will see Red Wings select players from USHL this year as well.

Whitelaw sounds like a Draper-pick and compared to Yanni Gourde...
“…I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hockey player work that hard. He was backchecking. He was tracking, he was heavy, he was hard. He’s made for those moments. Let’s be honest, Will Whitelaw is a future NHL player and he’s an unbelievable kid.” -Ryan Ward, HC of the Phantoms
“I like to shoot the puck and make plays…I think that my 200-foot game is evolving right now. I know I need to continue to build on that. I think that I’m very good making plays off the rush, getting a quick shot that surprises the goalie, and setting up my teammates.” -Whitelaw
Whitelaw’s work ethic and never-say-die attitude that has followed him since his days at Red Pine Elementary, combined with his relentless motor, vision, and high-end skating will make him not only a prospect to watch in the 2023 Draft but for fans of the team that ultimately selects him. -Matthew Zator
“Despite being an undersized forward he plays a very gritty, pest role with a lot of skill. He’s hard on pucks and physical along the boards…He’s at his best when he’s the puck dominant player on the ice.” – Austin Garret, Smaht Scouting

Just for something different I took Reinbach and Simishev in the first. Then in the second I got Nelson, Edstrom, and Whalberg. I kinda liked getting the best RH and Best LH dmen in the draft and then those three centres later. Just for the record I don’t think any of those guys will be there at those points in the draft

Literally the more and more we talk about all these prospects, the more I’m convinced Stevie is taking Sandin-Pelikka for no other reason that no one is talking about him at all as being a possibility. Like he’s the guy he and Hakan have been sitting on for like two years and doing everything in their power to not tip their hand. And we’re going to absolutely implode as a fan base when he’s called

Im quoting myself from earlier in the thread. This is going to be hilarious when this happens.
