Two years ago Detroit picked a kid 6th overall who extremely similar scouting reports and production. He had different placement on the mocks because he wasn’t Russian. But I think the pre-draft narrative around Edvinsson is similar to what people say about Simashev after they say “Russia stuff aside…”
At 2021 draft players still on the board after #6 pick (Edvinsson) were Eklund,Clarke,Guenther,Boucher,Sillinger,Coronato. At 2023 Michkov,Leonard,Danielson,Dvorsky,Willander,BUT,Benson.Time will tell of course but we can agree that 2023 group has much higher potential then the one from 2019

If you only video scout then get you a bunch of Chayka picks.

On video, how do you evaluate a player when he doesn’t have the puck? The camera only follows the puck. You can’t.
Thats why people watch the games live eventually. See if the stuff off camera matches what is on.

Not just the play without the puck, but how is he as a teammate? Does he converse with players on bench? Come in with the right attitude? Etc.?

To suggest that people are only looking at video to make their evaluation is detached from reality.

I think Chayka was pretty darn good at drafting. He valued very different things than Bill does.
Yes - put his 5 years up against any 5 yr period for the Coyotes, and you would be surprised at the players found.

Keller, Chychrun, Entwistle, Soderstrom, Maccelli, Hayton, Bahl, and Joseph all have seen NHL time and are likely to for the future. This does not include Garland, Jenik, Farinacci, or Crotty in the mix (Garland being the one selection Chayka was given when Maloney was still here) and the others are still likely to have prolonged AHL careers at the very least.

While not elite, our drafting has been significantly better with Chayka at helm. I count 33 picks made and on the verge of 12 being NHL regulars, to some degree. Right now, close to 9 or 10 with promise.

Wait? You know he’s gone, right?

Are you saying Chych, Keller etc. have poor personality and character?
I'm saying a) that several of Chayka's "good player" picks are no longer with the organization, having been deemed inessential or replaceable, and b) that Chayka picked for stats and analytics and had no real feel for character or personality.

The law of averages allows for a good character player like Keller to come out of that selection without Chayka having any real sense that it would happen.

When a team hires a new GM, most times they clean house feeling their way is better than the previous GM. I have no idea, or either do you as far as that goes, how deep Chayka and co. dug into to draftee's character or personality, but saying he had "no real feel" would be incorrect.

Agreed, but I think that's still significantly better than previous regimes. We've drafted horrendously overall.
We never had the budget or staff to do traditional scouting effectively. Chayka used video and metrics in lieu of proper scouting because it’s what he could do to bridge the gap. Those before him didn’t do that. Probably put because of technology limitations and there being no real precedent for this. Obviously a fully fleshed out actual scouting department is idea. But spreadsheets and InStat is better than a bare bones staff of part timers covering multiple time zones each.

If you have no idea, then you can't tell me conclusively that I'm wrong. Logic doesn't work that way.

True, but you can tell me conclusively that you are right.;)
That's true too, but there is a lot of evidence, anecdotal and otherwise, that informed my opinion.

That said, I reserve the right to change my opinion upon discovering new facts.

I probably redraft like
Svechnikov
Dahlin
Tkachuk
Dobson
Q Hughes
Bouchard
Hayton
K'Andre Miller
Kotkaneimi
Farabee
Same, except there are very few players in the league I'd prefer to have on my team over Dahlin, and Svechnikov is not one of them.

Also I'm not so sure Kotkaniemi is my favorite finn from this draft. That might be bias though.
