Prospect Info: [2023 - 69th] Jacob Fowler (NCAA - Boston College)

I'm not sure why Fowler would care that much about burning a year of his ELC. He isn't going to be the starter next year, and likely not the year after either, maybe as a 1a, 1b. You'd think taking the extra year to establish himself as a pro would be a better financial decision, but then again a lot of hockey players seem to make dumb decisions when it comes to contracts and money. How many players (including 3 of our own) signed long term deals during a flat cap when they could've made more if they took bridge deals and waited?

Not too concerned in any case.

The owners need to put a stop to this tactic when the next CBA is negotiated.

If Fowler actually wants to burn a year why would the Habs say no?

Im not sure they'd say no. I think they're discussing with him what they think is best for his development, which seems to be joining Laval for a potential deep run, and then letting him decide. While there's a financial advantage of burning the year, there's also another one if he develops into a better player.

Burning a year for a goalie makes no sense. By the time your rookie contract runs out you wouldn't have had enough time to establish yourself. It's probably better financially for Fowler to just take the ATO and hope by 2nd contract he would have had 2 years of splitting time at the NHL level.

Because that is when he is the cheapest and goalies take a long time to develop. He is unlikely to be an important NHL asset in his first two pro seasons so they want to have him for a third ELC season where he might actually be ready to make a push for a significant role. Part of the reason that drafting goalies too high is a bad idea is that you typically get next to zero value on their ELC's so why reduce the chance of getting any value even further by shortening his ELC....

I had the same thought - Fowler is not in a position to be looking for his post-ELC contract eagerly, even Price took some time to establish himself.

But then, maybe the habs should burn his year for the exact same reason: it has little risk, it won't change anything on the long run. Just give it to him...

I have zero concerns overall, this is just negotiations. Fowler camp trying to make it sounds he wants to go back is just hilarious to be honest. Everybody can see the kid's a goalie's goalie, and he has nothing to prove in college anymore, Fowler is desperate to play in the pro. Like a teen desperate his crush will go to the prom with him but still trying to play it cool.

Could he sign the ATO and then decide last minute if he signs his ELC or continue with the Rocket? At least we could evaluate his performance against pros before making a decision.

Future #1 is coming home! Wonder what number he would wear with the Habs, will anybody every wear 31 again? He’s probably gonna take Primeau’s 30
