OT: HFNYR Official Foodie Thread including Craft Beer, Wine & Liquor

You have much more muscle than me so maybe my 19% BF is more accurate than I figured. I will keep working at it. I have been working on losing as much fat as possible and plan to bulk up a bit after my fat cut is done. I still have a good inch that I can pinch on my gut :D

Obviously not irresponsibly heavy - when I say heavy, it’s relative - but heavy lifting and carnivore diet has always burned far, far more fat for me than any other combination of diet and exercise. Heavy lifting can be anything, but it should be strenuous enough that finishing 3 full sets of 10 is a challenge. Not including additional warmup and burnout sets at lower weights, I usually find a weight where I can do something like 10x, 10x, 8x, 6x, 5x, 5x and go for six sets that progressively get shorter as I fatigue. Part of the reasons the reps drop is also that I try to keep the form very strict so getting to 10 gets harder and harder as muscles tire and the form wants to break down. But this creates what is called an “after burn” effect - essentially the idea is that lifting to an adequate level of intensity forces your body to continue burning calories while it recovers, even after the workout has ended. With lighter workouts or cardio, you stop burning calories within a minute or two of the workout ending. With more intense/heavy workouts your body becomes more like a furnace and burns calories for 2-3 hours post workout. Additionally, as you build more muscle mass, your body burns more calories daily, making it easier to lose more and more fat while consuming the same diet as prior. I know you didn’t ask for advice but I that’s my secret. That and a pint of whiskey a day 😂😒

I will definitely add muscle down the road when able. I agree more muscle will burn more calories. I was mostly doing weights up till around 6-9 months ago. I started having some stomach muscle issues so I stopped with the weights and have just been doing cardio. I'm kind of the opposite of you. I have found no matter how much I work out diet is important for my body. I used to skate up to 8 hours a day and still could not go crazy diet wise. You must have good genetics. I used to do Keto for years but now I figure life is too short so I eat other stuff that I enjoy. :)

I have good genetics for a thicker build. If I didn’t lift, I would be flabby looking. It would never be possible for me to achieve like the 160lb early Eddie Vedder look or the average thin rock star look. It really leaves me no choice but to lift. I put on mass easily which helps me burn calories and keep my stomach somewhat lean, but I don’t naturally burn fat and calories to the point where if I just ate clean and jogged I would have an easy time being skinny. Everyone has the potential, so I could achieve a really thin body type if it was my goal, but this is the build that is most natural for my genetics. Kind of stocky. Not super short, but 5’10 is pretty short for 220.

I am anywhere from 53-25lbs above the maximum “healthy” weight for my size but if you look at my pictures or BMI I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would call me obese. But me being in that 135-170 range is also impossible. Losing 50lbs would be virtually unachievable… nearly 90 is absurd (though I believe that low end weight listed is also absurd).

I think I’m like 1/4 bear. I’m “Russian” (from the various former portions of USSR), Scottish, Scandinavian… I’m built like a short Ovie with no discernible talent.

Started Keto August 1st. Was irresponsibly obese weighing 288. 44 years old. 5-11. Down to 218 now. No exercise. Just following a keto diet.

I wanted to do the carnivore diet, but after like, day 3 I was losing it. Had 2 cheat days. Day before thanksgiving, and thanksgiving day. My goal was to go 6 months. Aug to Feb.

My first cheat day I had a pizza. It was the most delicious f***ing thing in the world. Sure, I missed rice, pasta, bread. But I ESPECIALLY missed pizza. Ordered a large 1/2 pepperoni. I don’t like a lot of toppings. After slice 4, I was comatose. I got hot. Sweaty. I was convinced this is the end lol.

Next day I had typical Thanksgiving feast, but limited. Felt awful again afterwards. Hopped right back on keto the very next day.

February comes. I feel great. I don’t think keto is sustainable longterm. Maybe I’ll quit at 200lbs and switch to a more Mediterranean diet, which I’m friendly with being Greek. Found a ton of keto hacks during my journey and I wanted to share them with you foodies.

Great stuff my friend.

I love keto. It is the only thing I can easily stick to since it fits my lifestyle well.

The only caution I would recommend... be careful of low-carb bread. Some of those can spike your blood sugar and knock you out of ketosis. When I was younger, low carb wraps, tortillas, etc. all had no impact. Now? I have to eat really clean in order to stay in ketosis (which is fine, I feel better eating that way).

I've had a craving for shrimp and I could crush that shrimp dish you posted!!

I have read strips to see my ketone levels. The Arnold’s bread and Mission wraps fortunately havent affected me. I’ll occasionally get an Atkins snack and noticed that certain sugar alcohols like Maltitol have a glycemic index of 35 and are not keto friendly, even though they’re advertised as such. They very unhealthy though so I rarely dabble in them. How long have you been on keto?

Enough of this health/fitness talk. This is a food thread dammit!

A new pizza place opened up by my sister's house in Massapequa Park, called Taglios. Roman style, unbleached, unbromated flour. You can eat 5 slices & not feel bloated. Absolutely phenomenal pizza. I love square style slices that are almost weightless & these were perfect. The regular would be a winner without the sesame seeds on the crust.

Those square slices look fantastic. I’ll have to try it if I’m on LI soon. Got a lot going on with family right now or I’d tell them to get some and report back.

I'll be down there this weekend & I plan on bringing an entire square pie back to CT for myself. LOL. It was that f***ing good.

Not too far from where I grew up so I'll need to arrange a trip the next time I'm in the area.

Really is incredible how important the small details are.

square weightless slice sounds like layla jones in cobble hill. nice slice.

Not by go to in that area but I stopped in once and it was pretty good.

Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill is basically a wet dream for anyone who enjoys food though. At least a dozen spots that are A Tier or above.

f*** the new Court Street Bagel though.

On and off for 10 years. I usually start the year on keto and go through Q1.

Oh a bunch. You could honestly walk down Court or Smith street and just pop into a random place and do pretty well (except Vinny's on Smith, avoid that place like the plague.)

The popular spots in CG are Frankie's 457 (it's good, but overrated IMO) and Lucali (weird reservation rules but definitely very good. Pizza gets the love but the calzones are really the star, they're realllly f***ing good) but my favorite restaurant in the area is a little hole in the wall place called Cremeni (court st between west 9th and Garnet.) Run by an Italian couple and they actually make all of the dishes themselves. They import all of their ingredients and the small details really make a difference. Great outdoor space in the back of the building too if you don't mind getting chewed up my Mosquitos (they do their best to control them, but it's tough in this area.) Way better than Frankie's.

Other places I really like are Bar Bete (Smith between Degraw and Douglass, get the yellow cake for dessert) Sociale (Court street between Sackett and Degraw) and Salt's cure (Court between Carroll and President) if you like brunch (phenomenal pancakes.) Luana's Tavern (Court and 4th st) has decent food but if you like vibes, this place is all about them. Really great outdoor space and the new owners are awesome people. Ugly Baby and Buttermilk Channel were both great but they both shut down within the last few months (though a new Thai place is opening up where UB was and I think the head cook from UB is running it so it'll probably be really good - This was/will be on Smith right off of 4th st.)

F+F (Court between 4th st and Luquer, actually right next to Frankie's) is my favorite pizza in the area (get a fresh pie, the individual slices just aren't as good) and Baby Luc's (Court between 2nd pl and 1st Pl) is hit or miss with people but it really grew on me over time. Caputo's (Court between president and Union) is a fantastic bakery if thats your thing.

Cremini looks really interesting. My GF would love that place.

I didn't realize Lucali was now taking reservations. What are the rules?

Cremini is amazing and you should go if/when you get a chance.

On Lucali - You have to wait on line (a physical, in person line) to reserve your table.

If you go on a Friday, you better get there an hour+before they start taking names or else you will not be getting a seat. I imagine Saturday is just as bad but I've never gone on a Saturday.

It used to be even DUMBER where they would separate everyone by what time slot they wanted once they started taking reservations (I was once the 3rd person on line but wanted a 7 PM res, so I had to wait until they filled up all of the 5pm and 6pm slots before they got to me) but now it's first come first reserve no matter what time you're looking for so props to them for making the process less stupid. Its a 5ish minute walk from where we used to live so it wasn't a super pain in the ass for us but I've seen out of towners who didn't know the rules (or the specifics) stop by and get completely f***ed over. I've seen the Friday line get really crazy in the early summer months, like loop around Carroll Street and all the way down to the next avenue crazy. Legitimately 100+ people who had no shot of getting a table.

Now if it weren't worth it, no one would f***ing deal with this and they fill up every slot when ever they're open.

Also note that its BYOB. Not a huge deal but if you're looking to have some wine or a beer with your dinner they do not serve it in house.

You could call in and do a pick up but that is also f***ing chaos. I've seen fights break out over this lmao.

LOL. All that hassle for a pizza....in Brooklyn no less. I would NEVER attempt to eat there on a weekend. When I do finally attempt to try it, it will be on a Tuesday night.

I love BYOB, honestly. It's so easy to show up with a bottle of wine & I know what I'm bringing is going to be better than what most pizzerias have on their list. Plus restaurants have gotten so out of control with their liquor prices. There's no reason to ever pay $60 for a $15 bottle of Chianti, anywhere. It's part of the reason I don't enjoy dining out very often, portion size & quality being the main reason.

So many restaurants have jacked their prices while using obviously inferior ingredients or cutting the portion size almost in half. Perfect example, I love fried calamari, but the days of ordering it are over because every place I go around here charges at least $18 for about 12 rings & a few tentacles. It's just stupid.

I had the Costco Frozen ITALPIZZA Wood Fired Soppressata with Pepper & Onion Pizza. I liked it and I generally do not like pepperoni pizzas. 3 smallish pizzas for $13.50. I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

I know living out of NYC can severely limit one's ability to find a decent pizza locally, but I'd rather make my own pizza than resort to eating a frozen pizza from Costco. No offense, Nicky!

Are there no better options for you locally?

If it were just the pizza I wouldn't have bothered beyond the first time (it's good, but theres better 5 blocks away) we went but the calzones really are that good. Worth the hassle which is just comical now.

If someone were just looking for Pizza at a sit down location I'd recommend going to Juliana's instead. It's better, cheaper and the wait times are manageable. Not within the CG/CH bubble but a manageable 25-30 min walk away.

see the northern cobble hill/brooklyn heights area is a bit if a pizza desert. Fascati is fascati, quick slice, but besides that I'm not a fan of most of the places. Monty Qs, my little Pizza, Luzzo, Table 87, none scratch the itch. There's a new sit down spot Jules. and there's an italian joint cash only where one guy makes everything on henry and pacific that i like.

I have made lazy efforts to make my own pizza in the past.

There is one pizza place I have heard good things about that I would like to try someday but I prefer to eat in often for multiple reasons (convenience, weight loss, no tipping lol). I get a lot of BBQ food out though and then I freeze it lol.

I'm offended! (Joke) :D

Jules is pretty close to where we live now. Will drop in at some point this spring.

Not just the pizza though (at least in BH), good food in general is pretty scarce on this side of Atlantic and the one thing I miss the most about the old neighborhood along with my unhinged Italian neighbor.
