Such an awful deal for the Leafs. Matthews is all about the bag.

The MacK contract looking better by the day.

4 years? That's really weird to me. Letting your contract expire at age 31 is definitely a gamble.
He'll still be 30, turning 31. As long as he's still a top tier player(Which he really should be but I would say there's definitely a non zero chance he falls off pretty hard especially with the wrist injuries he has had plus normal regression curve), some GM would happily give a 30 year old Matthews a 7 year, $17-18M per year deal when the cap is pushing towards $100M.

Keep in mind the Leafs themselves gave Tavares a 7x$11M deal when he was 28.

I think a 3 year deal would have been maximum savagery from AM34 and his camp, but 4 years could very well end with the same result.

We pretty much know the maximum cap the next two years... 87.675 and 92.05. That's the maximum inflator. Per the MOU, the cap is based of full 2 years previous revs. If we hit the 6b last season, even with the escrow adjustments, we should approach 88m mark. Then ~6.3-6.4b this year would hit the 92m mark. From there the next CBA will determine if there is more to be had.

Yeah that's the top end. If it ends up in that neighborhood I expect Leon and McDavid to get a fair bit more then $14-15M.

I can't really argue with your reasoning, but I think the GM that gives him the 8 year deal at 31 will probably be fired two years later.

He’s already made 114mil guaranteed in his career. Then he gets another shot at another ~100mil contract at 31. “Worst case” he gets a career ending injury with only 114mil banked for his career.

The Leafs just get bent over here.

I understand he is a great player, but he is not worth that money.

For a guy not willing to go past 4 years, the Leafs should have been pushing this under 12.
He held all the cards, he's going to be UFA next summer. Leafs couldn't do shit other than saying yes or no.

So not maximum chaos, but pretty insane honestly. Dude is absolutely looking to make the maximum amount of cash in his career.

There was a recent article in The Athletic that pondered why star NHL players are locking themselves in 8-year contracts when you just never know what the team will look like in year 3 in terms of rebuilding, coach, etc. In other sports, the best players generally exert more power and have more flexibility in choosing where they want to play, up to and including issuing trade demands (current NHL CBA and cap rules are obviously a barrier to this). After you reach a certain threshold in career earnings, why wouldn't you want a shorter term contract so you can play in as many contending seasons as possible?

what were they supposed to do let him walk? He was getting paid regardless of term.

annoys me how everyone in here is a contract specialist and thinks they can negotiate better deals.

That's true, but I just find it weird he wouldn't cash out now for 8 years. 1 bad injury could potentially result in forfeiting around 56 million.

The thing about the Leafs is that they will always explore every opportunity to ice the most competitive team possible during this current core’s tenure. Whether by trading future assets, taking advantage of LTIR and spending right up to the cap limit.

They had no choice in the matter, this is a good deal for both Auston and Toronto. They will have to find ways to fill out their roster with players who exceed their contract value by paying a premium of assets, or players who are on ELC’s. Whether they win the cup is to be determined, but I admire the organization for going for it every single year.
