I had high hopes for Hiller, but he’s still not found the guts to take full measures and is still cutting corners where it counts. Love that he’s gotten results from QB and Clarke. Plus Laffy has lifted his production as well.

And it’s nice to see Turk elevated over PLD. The coach is doing things to send a message to guys not pulling their weight. But forcing Gavrikov next to Doughty, and not scratching England for Spence against the Canucks is a missed opportunity.

The coach is willing to throw the forwards into the blender and has gotten results that look sustainable. So why not take the chance on D and raise hopes in a similar way.
he's been trying though, much more than we can say about set it and forget it todd

i feel like gavrikov has just been underperforming for a month or two now and he's someone you need to count on day-to-day, but i don't think we have anyone else we can count on for those kind of minutes. hard to take risks there when you're still in the hunt and you're getting iffy goaltending

i'm still on the fence a bit but i'm at least hopeful he'll sort it out

Looks like Turcotte up with Kopi and Byfield. Suspect Dubois down with Laffy and Kaliyev and Lizotte down to the 4th line.

WIth ya, except I imagine 3rd line will have JAD on it and Kaliyev will be on 4th

Edit: I see this has been put out officially.
Ugh that forward depth is rough. At least it seems like Clarke is going to play...
we need to go with 7 d

If it were not for the PLD trade and lack luster play that has followed, Gavrikov would be getting a lot more heat around here.

unfortunately i think the dip in play correlates awful nicely to that islanders game.. may be another indictment on our medical guys

Time to catch Vancouver sleeping! Calling it now, JAD gets his second of the season!!!

How many players in the Kings lineup are in the correct place they would be on a championship contender? Doesn't seem like many are.

Look at Vancouver's strength down the middle vs LA's. They have some questionable depth on the wing, but their best players are just so much better than the Kings top players.

Hughes
Petterssen
Miller
Demko
Boeser
Lindholm
Hronek

I mean this analysis kind of follows what the Athletic just wrote about, but you're really stretching the lack of high end talent to make a lot of assumptions.

In just performance, as of this year, most of our depth fills the boxes that this model is looking for for a contender, it's just the top end that fails miserably. We still have a problem, and the problem is a huge problem that arguably cannot be solved without a complete tear down, but it's not the "We have none of the horses" argument you are alluding to.

I guess the definition of elite is up for debate.

I thought they were in a good spot with the 2nd and 3rd lines coming into the season. That is why I was for the PLD trade, you weren't winning a SC with Danault as the 2C. While a 2nd line of PLD-Fiala and Kaliyev (pre-season 2nd line) wasn't going to blow your socks off, it made the third line elite and the 4th line led by Lizotte very good. Of course PLD has been terrible the entire year and just magnified the deficiency's at the top of the lineup even more.

As I stated, the Kings have more depth than Vancouver, especially on the wing, but the lack of top-end talent in comparison to Vancouver is glaring. The NHL is not the NBA or the NFL where having 1-2 great players or a great QB largely makes the entire team, but they certainly do matter, look at the cup champs of the last 2 decades. The Kings claimed to have a championship caliber roster coming into the season, and there has not been a championship team with less star caliber players than the Kings have. The closest would be the 2019 Blues, everyone else has had multiple Hall of Fame players in their primes.

How many players do you think are currently into the right spots on a championship team?

Byfield - if he was playing with a McDavid or MacKinnon, sure he can be your 1LW, with Kopitar and Kempe, doubt it.

Doughty - Is Drew Doughty still a championship caliber 1D? I would say no, great career but he's winding down a bit, largely because he's playing to much

Moore + Danault - Again maybe maybe if you have a McDavid or MacKinnon on the 1st line, but when you don't have a superstar 1C these guys should be on that 3rd scoring line, and in fairness they were until PLD and Kaliyev and to some extent Fiala all had down years in their expected roles.

If you are a team without superstars and are trying to contend, you probably aren't going to, but in theory if you want to, you have to have exceptional secondary and depth talent throughout the lineup to make up for not having a Kucherov, MacKinnon, Makar, Doughty, Kane, Crosby etc.

It seems like you guys are agreeing unless im missing something

largely we have the 'depth' a championship team would need--but the guys that slots those guys properly as depth--the high end--aren't able to hold up their end of the bargain for various reasons. Anze is old. Doughty is badly overplayed. Kempe's sagging. Our "#1 goalie" is a Flames #4 castoff journeyman.

Our 2nd/3rd/4th lines and 2nd/3rd d pairings regularly smoke their matchups but the damage is done by the McDavids of the world and it's no wonder our PP is unable to get us over the hump when we don't have those guys.

But as I mentioned in another thread--a team missing top-end talent and relies on depth hurts even more when you lose any of the 40 pt guys, but ESPECIALLY Kempe, ARvidsson, Anderson. a team with prime Kopitar or any of the top 10 1Cs could absorb that. Not this team.

Probably just randomness. I'm not giving him much credit for it.

And the team looks like it's reverted back to it's pre coaching change level of play.

Kaliyev on the 4th line again??? I’m shocked.

Again you’re not gonna produce playing with Lewis and Lizotte. Extremely frustrating they won’t keep him in a top 9 slot where he can get use to his line mates.
i think that's technically lizotte's best linemates, lewis and kaliyev. it's not best for kaliyev but best for lizotte anyway

it's wild how every line tanks when JAD/PLD is inserted onto it though, that PLD line is gonna blow dick

Kaliyev actually looks best with Lizotte for whatever reason. Kaliyev also had chemistry with Lemieux. Hed blindly flip pucks out to Lemiex on the breakout and they had a little grind n’ cycle in the offensive zone corners.
Fiala played his best as well with Lizotte and also Kupari and Vilardi.
The injuries look to be wearing on Lizotte though and hes not as effective as he was.

Top line forward out
Top line D out
2nd line forward out
1 of the only physical players we have out.

Gonna set the bar around the lights sockets for tonight.

Maybe the hair dryer next to the bathtub.

don't forget carter sandlak refereeing

#1 home win % at 79%
#3 OT/SO games with 29.4%

we go into the 3rd with a lead and things are gonna get real whacky real quick

I feel like the Kings are going to exhaust all possible ways to lose a game with a score of 4-2 through the end of the season.
