His contract is an issue, but just throwing this out there. I know Des is a better hockey player.

Johnston 29 6’5 234 $1.1 mil cap thru 24-25.
Deslauriers 32 6’1 220 $1.75 mil cap thru 24-25.
Lol 1.1million is laughable as “ an issue “ given this big dude is a huge upgrade on kassian who we tried desperately to give a face punching roll too. And this dude would bite kassians head off. Edit: Cronin is familiar with the player from his time with the islanders coaching staff

Definitely not holding my breath very doubtful
We need him badly. He can be coached to do the little things better. That’s what Cronin will tell our GM. He’s foaming at the mouth for him

I guess the team had a boat party yesterday. Leo, Mintyukov, and Luneau were all present (bottom left).

The 3 year commitment is more the issue than the actual dollars/cap hit. Personally I’d make the claim, but I don’t know that Verbeek will.

We can always waive him/trade/buy him out if he doesn’t hold value to the team later on. From what I remember he’s not so old.

with the ‘toughness’ topic, I do agree that our team seems to be more competitive on paper, the lack of a ‘tough guy’ to protect our stars is concerning.

some names were brought up before.. Comtois, Beaulieu, Benoit, hell even Nick Ritchie, but none of them really make a difference out there. Trading Des was a backwards move that never really made since.

Yet, the problem is, the game isn’t like that anymore. (Or maybe I haven’t paid attention to it). I would have loved to pick up Lucic when he was a viable option, but nothing ever came of it.

guess I have to wait for Warren and maybe Konnor Smith for protecting the young guns when (hopefully) they themselves make it

Johnston being a forward also means he doesn’t block any young kids coming up. Our bottom 6 is a dumpster fire. His price tag is 1.1m for the next few seasons. That’s not expensive at all.

Just came-back from the islander forum. They say big Johnston is beloved by his teammates. Great locker room presence

Very curious how they navigate luneau's time here.
Our Gm is showing the kid that we see him being around longterm and want to get him as much a look as possible. Undersized zellwegger isn’t being shown that same love

It's not that at all. Zell will get a look this year in all likelihood, but that decision didn't need to be made now. With Luneau not being AHL eligible it has to be now or not at all this year with him.

I'm more curious to see if luneau even gets a game. I can't tell if he truly made the team or if they just really don't want to send him to juniors yet.

Maybe they plan on sending him back to the Q but just want to show him how the NHL life is for a couple weeks and perhaps even requested that Gatineau trade him before they send him back to junior. That does happen from time to time when the NHL team prefers their prospect to play on a better team to help his development(Edmonton did that with Draisaitl years back and got him traded to Kelowna Rockets)
