Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim’s first line has had a ton of different combinations, largely because of injuries. There’s definitely been some promising progress after a nightmare 2022-23 season. The Ducks’ top line may not be scoring at a prolific clip, but they’re massively improved defensively. They’re controlling a positive share of expected goals and have surrendered just 2.27 goals against per hour. Leo Carlsson’s been solid in the No. 1 center role (although he’s only played 31 games). Terry has been on a tear since mid-Decemberwhere he’s driven a dominant 58 percent expected goals share and outscored opponents 18-8. Carlsson and Terry played the last couple of games on separate lines, so that’s a trend to watch out for.

If the Lundy-Mac-Silf line keeps working, I wonder if they keep trying it and add a different forward to that line either after the deadline (if Silf is moved) or next season. It's going to be tough to make 3 good lines, but we may not be that far off.
Killorn-Carlsson-Terry
Lundestrom-McTavish-???
Gauthier-Zegras-Vatrano

Or move Vatrano up and see if Nesterenko/Colangelo could work on that 3rd line (this season). I'm not sure if there is a deal to be made for Kakko, but he may have some untapped potential and sounds like he's pretty good defensively. If he could be a Silf replacement, Lundy-Mac-Kakko could be a tough line to handle.

It is a good spot for him tbh, he’s also seemed to really buy into what Cronin wants.

I imagine the biggest hurdle is how much he’ll want on his next deal…. But maybe he’ll keep it on the lower end to stay here.

I would like Frank to stay past this contract. He is still young enough to be part of the team when they are competitive again, which should be 1-2 years. I think we would have seen better progress, and be more on the bubble this season, if we didn't have all the injuries. We are like Top 3 in the league for man games loss due to injury. That would hurt any team significantly.

Vatrano brings more than just goal scoring, and he seems to be well liked and respected in that locker room.

I'm just tired of the mentality of "Hmmm how much can we get for so and so at the TDL"

He also brings the most obvious high octane effort on the team. One of the few players who very well conditioned.

I think that mindset is strictly based off people thinking he’s going to price himself out of Anaheim

No one dislikes Vatrano and his game, and what he’s done in Anaheim…. But there’s also a money # on next contract or term on next contract that kinda a no go. So maximizing assets kicks in.

I’m pretty indifferent and can see both sides of the coin, some people also act like trading Vatrano or any vet means we’re also not adding someone or replacing them

The difference is we should hopefully be ready to be competing, when his next contract is due, so would need that support around. It's not like we are entering a new rebuild, and selling everyone again...if we are, then have to start questioning Verbeek's plan. There is patience and then there is the Buffalo Sabres. lol.

Sure but moving Vatrano because he wants too much term/money on next deal or something doesn’t mean we’re not going to bring someone into fill that idea. We have assets to make moves that come up like a buchnevic/Bjorkstrand type move we’ve seen by teams in the past

Sure if we have a replacement like in the system for one example who they feel can take on his role, then sure. We will have Gauthier next season who is a pure sniper. One example, I think Verbeek would have kept Rakell around (Glad he didn't), if the term was less.

We know what we have with Vatrano, and If Frank is ok with a short term deal, I can see something working. I think to Verbeek, term will be the priority over AAV. I think we are a year away from this, unless Verbeek gets an offer now that is really something he can't pass up this TDL.

I agree about the term/Aav, and I think there is a sweet spot where both Vatrano and PV are happy.

There's such a huge gap between vets and the youth core in age. With presumed losses of Rico and Silf come TDL or at the end of the season, the Ducks will be losing veterans in their top-6/top-9. Out of the vet forwards Verbeek has brought in, Vatrano is the only one that's been the most successful. The problem with Vatrano is he's mostly offense and little ES defense; and that offense seems dependent on talented centers.

I'm indifferent if we keep or trade Vatrano, but I do value his presence on the ice with the youths around because Vatrano is an acquisition that has worked more positively with Anaheim. If Anaheim has too many youths, then we're mimicking the Oilers decade of demise.

Can we afford Vatrano? Probably because I don't see many superstar contracts being handed out like at an Oprah Christmas show. But how much and how long will Vatrano want? Verbeek kinda screwed himself over by overpaying and giving a longer term to Killorn, $6.5 mil AAV for four years to a 34 year old. That's the precedent that I'd use if I were Vatrano.

If Vatrano keeps playing like this year, then his next contract will be his last big contract to maximize his career earnings. He'll probably look for as much term as he can get. I don't think he'll accept a short term deal. If a team comes calling with the right offer for Vatrano then PV needs to take it.
Id offer him 5 x 6.. That will take him to being 36 years old. Offcourse you wait it out.. He still has a year left. At 3 right?
