Something I think that is worth nothing about the All Three Zones data is that it's only from ~1/4 of the seasons game. For Cates, he only tracked ~195 minutes at 5v5 tracked. That's about 18% of his total icetime...

On the Evolving-Hockey podcast, Corey Sznajder said he tries to get 10-15 games for all teams before the new year, then he focuses on the better teams. So the majority of Flyers games that were tracked came from the October-December timeframe. I think the Flyers had 22 games tracked this year, compared to 30-35 for some of the other teams. Of those 22 games, 14 came from October through December, and 8 came from January through March.

Now, the analytical community has said that right around the 200 minute mark is when things start to normalize, and Corey said the same thing on the Evolving-Hockey Podcast. He said, once you get to about 15 tracked games, the numbers do not vary too much. But, I like I said above, I think it's worth noting that these are not all of the games.

I'd say the Emporer has no clothes moment was when Chick Flicker pulled off a whopping two whole nothing trades at the busiest deadline I've ever seen. Shit the bed with JVR. The whole league saw it. Actually got national mentions. This fanbase was livid, but even other fanbases took notice. Nobody outside of Philly gave a f*** about TORTS saying there was more work to be done than he first expected.
Nope. CF was dead man walking at that point, it's obvious Hilferty had already been in place as Scott's successor, Briere was lined up for the job - all CF did was accelerate the inevitable.

It was Torts who opened up the eyes of the Comcast executives to how bad things really were, no more sugar coating by Scott.

You're absurdly delusional if you think it wasn't the fans and the media. Torts is a nothing factor.

Note that Cates didn't become a full-time center until December 7, so most of these numbers are from early in the season when he (and Frost) were bouncing around the lineup.

It would be interesting to see a sample from January to April, I suspect the numbers would look a lot better on offense, not good, but respectable for a 3C.
Last 56 games: CF 48.02%, CFrel +0.79, xGF 49.89%, xGFrel +1.36, pp/60: 1.56

Torts has no illusions about Cates, he's more Pageau or Gourde than Barzal or Nico.
But that's still a valuable player.

If Couts returns, Cates moves to 3C.

If Gauthier blossoms at center, or they get lucky and get #1 or #2, Cates moves to LW, playing center on an energy line with 3rd period leads, PK, etc.

He's a better version of Laughton, not as fast, shot isn't quite as good, but much higher IQ and far better defensively. Too valuable to waste at 4C unless the team becomes incredibly deep.

Fans and the media weren't pushing in the fall, it was Torts who focused media attention on the sorry state of the team. The failure to move JVR was just the icing on the cake.

You’re delusional. The entire fan base was onboard when Fletcher said that they were going to be aggressive and then the next day passed on Gaudreau and signed Deslauriers. Hell, a certain fellow contrarian was on board that day before he remembered he was a contrarian.

A good portion of the fan base has been on board for years. They got AV fired. It’s the same thing here.

Tortorella is not who you think he is.

This board is not the fan base, despite your delusions of grandeur.
Nor did the media lead the revolution.

In that mythical pre December 7th period that you are so hung up on, Cates took 292 faceoffs, only slightly fewer than Hayes and Laughton. He was slotted down the middle for the vast majority of the season.
