He certainly may sell them for a bunch of reasons, but I find it hard to believe that selling an AHL franchise moves the needle in the billion dollar plus costs of building a state of the art sporting arena these days. What are AHL franchises worth, $10-15 million? That is a drop in the bucket of an arena. Plus, isn't he going to get PAID for the Yotes?
The "getting PAID" part is not 100% clear:

1) How much is he getting PAID, and how much is the NHL absorbing the debt he absorbed taking on the Coyotes? He's being "made whole", but I question how much cash he put up for the Coyotes vs taking on debt.

2) Even if he does get PAID, he is going to need a lot of that money to be able to pay for an expansion team when he's ready.

3) Selling the Roadrunners is a quick way to get the cash he would need for the land auction immediately.

All that said, I think it's more likely Meruelo keeps the Roadrunners in Tucson and affiliated with SLC, or moves them to the arena he wants to build at his casino in Reno and keeps them affiliated with SLC.

Jeff Marek was on Sirius today discussing how the price is set at $1B for the next 5 years should he wish to return. Whereas the franchise owners for a new club such as Atlanta or elsewhere could potentially pay upwards of $2B or more in less time. He mentioned that the govs of the league aren’t too thrilled with the “sweetheart or just go away” deal even if it was done to avoid litigation.

Part of this is also likely based on Bettman not ever wanting to give up on the location. He was huge on expanding the league footprint in the 90’s and his biggest accomplishment was seemingly hockey in the desert. They’ve always been hesitant to give up on it and I’ve always suspected it’s Gary behind it. I’m sure a lot of this is to get away from the owner with as little fight as possible…it does also leave the door open for Gary to keep his dream alive.

Heard the show with Friedman. I believe the current owner will take the money and run and won’t get a deal done in the required 5 years.

so one thing that I've noticed is that in the announcements regarding the Yotes sale to Utah I have yet to see anything regarding the AHL club. Curiouser and curiouser. I may just be putting the cart before the horse here but if they are being sold as a separate entity I can easily see Dundon/the Canes buying the team. Could also explain some of the "yet to be announced" stuff we've been getting lately.

bye, bye Tucson. Owner screwing two fans bases in Az.:

Tempe is actually a more convenient location for getting in/out of for an AHL club though. Would be so on-brand for Dundon to go with that for our affiliate too.
I think he needs to keep a professional hockey club to keep his gambling license (heard that on Jeff marek show with Friedman…..Friedman did say that gambling biz isn’t doing that great right now)

Chicago GM was stressed all season and having a NHL affiliate makes things easier.

Wut? you don’t say. No one could have guessed.

They are working on an affiliate for next year. My guess is the team we are purchasing, their previous affiliate is jumping with Chicago

When do you start preparing for ’24-25?

“I started looking at next season last year. You look ahead as to who will be available. We’re trying to get some stuff done with a possible NHL affiliation very soon. Hopefully, it all falls into place again and we get back to some normalcy of the Chicago Wolves and winning.”

Would being affiliated with an NHL team make your job easier?

“A lot easier, just because there are NHL contracts and prospects and first-rounders and guys like that. It would make my life a lot easier.”

They didn't just touch an electric stove coil that was just turned off, they stuck their hand into a 25,000 BTU gas burner on full blast and discovered that yes, indeed, stove is hot.

Or if that purchase falls through like Waddell said the earlier one did, it's a return to a year-to-year deal with the Wolves.

Far from my first choice, but Dundon can't make anyone sell a franchise. (No matter what posts have said here in the past!)
