Final score @ UBS Arena = Montreal 5 - New York 2 (I think). MTL captain M-P Poulin notches the hat trick on an ENG. The rest of the list of goal scorers is left to the imagination of the reader.

Game #2 on this Wednesday night, PWHL Minnesota improved their record to 2-0 with a 3-1 victory over PWHL Toronto. One of the unofficial "Builders" of the League, Kendall Coyne Schofield, scored the insurance goal for the home team.

Minnesota played more organized on offense in this 2nd game of their season, but they still seem to be struggling to sync up on defensive zone passes & assignments. With 9 points to lead the League standings, I guess they're doing the important things right - including strong goaltending.

It was nice to see Montreal finally reach their offensive potential. They adjusted their PP and made NY pay on the rush. They pre-scouted Corinne Schroeder very well and ensured they played to her weaknesses. I thought this was NY's best game of the season in terms of playing to their ideal offensive game. The way they attack on the rush with speed and physicality, it's like a stampede. Defensively they're still allowing too many rush chances against which eventually leads to the Grade A+ chances Montreal got. Minnesota is absolutely vibing right now. Right now they're looking like a team you don't want to go down against because it's hard to come back against the way they're playing defence and how they capitalize on their chances with Heise and Zumwinkle.

Now Minnesota is a bubble waiting to burst. Their Team SV% and SH% is tops in the league. Heise has an 80% SH% and Zumwinkle is at 33.3%. They both have 4 goals in 3 games. Minnesota also has the lowest SF/60 and the 2nd highest SA/60 in the league. They're the only team with a double digit Team SH%. They have a Shots For % of 42.41% which is the lowest in the league. This is how they're built but none of this looks sustainable. Once we get 10 games in we'll know what Minnesota truly looks like.

With Minnesota drawing 4,707 tonight, I might be more concerned about maintaining the momentum throughout this season.

If the PHF or CWHL ever hit that number they'd be throwing a parade. The bar isn't the 13K they recently hit, it's to be consistently in the low thousands. If they manage that they'll be doing great for a league that was created in 6 months. This isn't a league that's going to be defined by it's 1st season but by it's 3rd and 4th seasons. It's too early to even be concerned.

Wolves game, Wild game (debut by stud goalie prospect to boot) and it was snowing. I expect #s will be back up this weekend

Lee Stecklein & Taylor Heise are a potent combo. Stecklein is like Deion Sanders in his prime - shuts down half the playing surface.

Would PWHL be a good option as a tenant in the new capitals arena? Already solid WNBA support in dc.

I definitely want to see what they can do with a full year of marketing, and logos and team names and so forth. But a lot of the people raving about the 8k and 13k openers seemed to be quite sure of themselves that this was the standard and not some 'opening night hype' numbers. None of the other games in the 2-4k range have even had their attendance mentioned with a "that's a great opening day/week draw under the circumstances"

EDIT: Also, iron out the damn rulebook and decide exactly what body contact they want to allow and what kind they don't. I would not want to be a ref in this league, with the league giving you a direct mandate to allow certain kinds of contact that is explicitly not allowed in the rulebook.

Personally I think Detroit, Buffalo, Chicago, DFW, Philly and Vancouver would be better options at this stage. Maybe even St. Louis. Not sure if Vancouver works travel wise but I know the fans would show out

I think to start you focus on traditional markets where people play hockey (Buffalo, Detroit, Vancouver, St. Louis) or ones with overwhelming size (DFW, Chicago)

I was at the home opener with 13k people in St. Paul. An electric environment and 3 players signed autographs after and the line wrapped around the entire concourse. Most were young girls wearing their own hockey team’s gear. It was really cool to see.

IMO as a lifelong resident ... Forget St. Louis. The market = the STL Blues, ever since the NHL expansion franchise started play in 1967. A parade of minor pro, semi-pro and juniors were tried, and none of them drew consistently more than flies (many as dead as the teams). The occasional women's hockey showcases (PWHPA Dream Gap, USA v CAN My Why Tour) managed to attract surprisingly large crowds. But women's hockey played regularly would draw more like the local Lindenwood University DI women's team (a few dozen regulars max - my generous headcount as a frequent attendee), plus however many discounted/comped tickets the local youth teams could be persuaded to cash in.

My only other opinion relates to the Chicago hockey market ... It's much stronger than STL, but the youth hockey community would have to be the PWHL target audience because the REAL money is spent on the Hawks & Wolves.

I'd be happy if the League would just instruct their referees to get the 🤬 outta the way of players pursuing the puck.
