October 7, 2023: SATURDAY MORNING LINKS

These are the links I could not stay up late to share. Some interesting stuff this time.

OUT-OF-TOWN SCOREBOARD

Alberta-50x50.jpg

Links:
➤ UofA: Bears fall to 0-3 for first time in 94 years (with boxscore)

I quote:
The loss drops Alberta to 0-3-0, while MRU improves to 3-0-0. It marks the first time since the 1929/30 season the Bears have started conference play with three-straight losses. The Bears started 1929/30 0-4-0 on the season, with teams only playing two games against each other and the conference, at that time, was composed of just Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

➤ TWU: SOMMER MAKES 39 SAVES IN LOSS TO DINOS (with boxscore)

This game marked the CW debut of Holy Trinity's Austrian goaltender.

➤ MacU: Griffins find late success but it's not enough to overcome slow start in loss to Huskies (with boxscore and video)

Goaltender Ashton Abel was coming back from injury for the Mythical Mutants. Those 6 goals on 36 shots cannot be pleasing.

REG: E. Houk (13:07 2nd)
Goal: UBC: Lane (24 shots, 23 saves), Reg: Evanoff L (16 shots, 11 saves), Meger (14 shots, 11 saves)

I missed posting the quick summary last night, so here it is. Some dubious golatending numbers for the Banjo-Cats.

I was listening on-line to the radio broadcast. It was 2-0 when I left to pick up some Chinese Food, and 7-0 when I returned. It was 0-0 after the 1st, and 7-0 after the 2nd. The goaltending of Kolby Thornton held the game scoreless for 20 minutes.

Quick Summary
Alta: A. Hall (16:50 1st), B. Gustafson (19:39 1st), J. Prokop (10:24 2nd), A. Hall (14:41 3rd), J. Kendall (17:53 3rd)
MRU: C. Bouchard (19:24 1st), R. Holmes (17:25 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (28 shots, 26 saves); MRU: Sims (20 shots, 15 saves)

After eight series thus far in the CW, this is the first one to be split. The Evil Monkeys have to be happy enough to swing in the vines, eat bananas, and throw feces in all directions. Both sides switched goalies from Friday, and maybe that wasn’t a great choice for MRU. The Bluegars are now 3-1-0, and the Monkeys are 1-2-1.

➤ TWU: SPARTANS DROP SECOND OF WEEKEND TO DINOS
➤ UofC: Dinos set U SPORTS record with 27th consecutive win (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
TWU: J. Klessens (03:28 1st), J. Jurgeneit (17:15 1st), M. Joss (16:17 3rd)
Calg: C. Gengenbach (14:55 1st), J. Poole (05:50 2nd), B. Lee (06:01 2nd), M. Stewart (08:02 3rd), C. Gengenbach (16:53 3rd), C. Gengenbach (19:54 3rd)
Goal: TWU: Berkeliev (53 shots, 48 saves); Calg: Stankowski (18 shots, 15 saves)

The scoreboard in this series was not nearly as bad as it might have been. Bedrock U dominated the shot clock, but it still took an empty-netter to quash the hopes of Holy Trinity. The Dinos are in the 1st place log-jam at 4-0-0, and TWU falls to 0-2-0.

➤ MacU: A spectacular save and two posts prevent Griffins from first win in 2-1 shootout loss to Huskies (with boxscore and video)
➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Win Shootout Thriller Against MacEwan (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
MacU: E. Strang (03:45 2nd)
Sask: J. Ball (01:30 2nd)
Goal: MacU: Davis (33 shots, 32 saves); Sask: Ross (24 shots, 23 saves)

Both sides switched goaltenders from Friday, and both played well. The shootout did not produce a goal until the Banjo-Mutts scored on the 10th attempt. The Mutts controlled more play than the Family Guys, but this was a big improvement for them from Friday night. The Mutts are now in the 1st place triumvirate at 4-0-0, and MacEwan falls to 0-3-1.

Reg: G. Asham-Moroz (04:47 1st), P. Bjorklund (07:39 1st), E. Houk (06:20 2nd), R. Schmidt (08:00 2nd)
Goal: UBC: Schwebius (19 shots, 15 saves); Reg: Meger (57 shots, 53 saves)

No game stories are posted yet, but this one had quite an ending. The Banjo-Cats built a 4-1 lead, despite being out-shot. A late 2nd period goal gave the T-irds an opportunity for a comeback. They out-shot the Banjo-Cats 19-2 in the 3rd period, and tied it up. At least the Kittens got a bonus point, giving them a 0-2-2 record. The T-irds are in that 1st place bundle, at 4-0-0.

If you want to find some consolation it wasn’t the worst blowout in college hockey this week.

Appears the Dino’s checked the math and realized they haven’t broken the consecutive wins record . Gotta be a little awkward realizing that (also shows how little coverage is on USports that it took a fan made site to debunk it).

That's Impressive! but IMO, more impressive that UNB did it in the same season.
Regardless, the Dino's didn't stick around long in Charlottetown.

I’d be curious what Western got up to in the early 2000’s.

EDIT - I saw a tweet saying Toronto had a 33 game streak in the ‘70’s

What is this business about Kolby Thornton barfing in the crease as reported by the Grand Forks Herald?!

I get that no one expects the Bisons to win this annual game (which could be coming to an end) but ten-zip is just embarrassing for the Bisons program. Not that much hinges on this game, but from a reputational standpoint it would be nice to see a more legitimate CW challenger step in, assuming it continues. I wonder what the Bisons get out of this deal considering it's a sellout crowd each year for UND?

Bisons take on the Moose again today at the HFA Centre, my son is planning to go to the game but there is seemingly no information available about it anywhere. Even calling the HFA Centre just puts you through to the voicemail of someone named "Jackie", who I assume is busy putting the finishing touches on a nice Thanksgiving dinner today instead of answering the calls of curious hockey fans.

I get the Bisons are paid to go down to play UND. But they might want to find a lower quality opponent. Are there Div III teams in Minnesota?

What's the story on the Dinos win streak? Calgary Sun had an article that has since been removed.

How many games have they won in a row, 27?

UNB got 26.

Is the record 33 by U of T?

Can someone clarify this for me because all I see are negative posts about the Dinos.

UNB got 28 across 2 seasons , CIS record keeping only lists single season streaks which is where the confusion with the Dinos thinking they had the record came from as UNB had won 26 straight in a single season. Who knows what the real record is, someone could have set it in 40+ year ago ( maybe it is UofT) and we would not know since it’s impossible to find records of anything related to CIS hockey. Only way we can back up the UNB stuff is Drummers awesome sites .

UNB got 26 in one season but 28 if you go back to the previous season, which seems wasn’t considered when the Sun posted that article.

Western had some undefeated seasons in the early 2000’s, but there was some ties mixed in…so hard to say how many they won consecutively.

October 9, 2023: BISONS GIVE THANKS FOR AN IMPROVED PERFORMANCE

Manitoba-73x73.jpg

MANITOBA BISONS 1
MANITOBA MOOSE 5

Links:
➤ UofM: Schedule & Results
➤ Moose: Jets Assign Trio to Moose
➤ Moose: Moose Reduce Roster by Five Players

I haven’t found a link for any summary, so here’s what I have:

LINEUPS:

MOOSE:
Goal
30 Giannuzzi (32 Milic)

Defence
58 Louis-Jean - 4 Barteaux
23 Kuzmin - 3 Kubicek
7 Lundmark - 2 Bauer

Forwards
50 Caron - 55 Conrad - 56 Mattheos
5 Bongiovanni - 16 Lucius - 54 Foss
49 Liwiski - 53 Jameson - 8 Jones
52 Katic - 37 Nikkanen - 48 Golder

BISONS:
Goal
30 Thornton (1 Harkness)

Defence
8 Toth - 4 Malchuk
16 Hartje - 24 Wareham
25 Calder - 5 Casey

Forwards
29 King - Thiessen - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 18 Hooker - 21 Basarab
10 Paulhus - 19 Arpin - 11 Ostir
14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 26 Boucher
12 Trimble - 23 Fawkes

Scratches
G 34 Hawryluk
D 6 Fry - 27 Gottfried
F 13 Sutter

SCORING:
1st period
Moose - Jones - scored 4-on-4
Moose - Kubicek - point shot

2nd period
Moose - Liwiski - rebound on a scramble
Bisons - Ostir - slot shot

3rd period
Moose - Jones - shorthanded 2-on-1 on a blueline turnover
Moose - Katic - powerplay - possibly (probably?) on a high stick

Shots on goal:
Moose: 1st: 8; 2nd: 16; 3rd: 26; total: 50
Bisons: 1st: 5; 2nd: 4; 3rd: 9; total: 18

The Bisons improved their play by a lot from Thursday’s game. Although the score was the same, the play was much different. The Bisons were a lot more aggressive, both physically and by increased offensive focus. The failed 3rd period powerplay was your TSN Turning Point. Had the Bisons scored to make it a 3-2 game, they were right in it. Their aggressiveness with the puck hurt them as a blue-line turnover gave the Moose a 2-on-1 break where Nicholas Jones notched his 2nd of the game. From that point onward, the Bisons never raised much of a fuss.

By the way, UND will not host the Bisons next year. They will play Augustana, a new Division I team from South Dakota, due to changes in NCAA rules which allow a pre-season exhibition game against Division I, II, or III or ACHA teams. I think the team was embarrassed this year. I overheard one player saying words to the effect of “We didn’t play. We just looked at the crowd.”

The linked stories say who cleared waivers to go from the Jets to the Moose, and those sent from the Moose to the ECHL. Those sent down from the Jets were forward Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, defenceman Kyle Capobianco, and goaltender Collin Delia. None were eligible to play against the Bisons. Those sent to the ECHL were forwards Danny Katic, Keaton Jameson, and Ryan Foss, defenceman Darick Louis-Jean, and goaltender Dante Giannuzzi.

As a bonus for many of the several little kids in attendance, the Jets practice ended during the warm-up. I saw the newly re-signed Mark Scheifele and another player I did not recognize signing autographs as they walked across to the dressing room.

Also, former Moose Cory Schneider retired today at the age of 37.

NEWS

Bedrock U deleted their Saturday game story and replaced it with the one linked below. It corrects the “winning streak” they allegedly broke. I have the new link below. Here’s the quote:

Correction: This article originally stated that the Dinos men's hockey team broke a U SPORTS record with 27 consecutive regular season wins. U SPORTS records have only tracked consecutive regular season wins contained to one season. There is not enough information to confirm the U SPORTS record for consecutive regular season wins across multiple seasons.

That rule changed last season, and is not the reason UND won't host the Bisons.

I would love to see a more competitive CW team take on UND. Unfortunately the Bisons are at the point where they make themselves and the conference look tiddly-winks with their increasingly embarrassing performances against the Fighting Hawks.

I’m sure UND realizes it would be better to play against a more competitive opponent next season. Maybe Alberta or Calgary?

I guess the problem is that travel becomes an issue... UM is a 2.5 hour bus trip away from UND. The next closest CW team is Regina, which would add 5.5 hours on the TCH. Any other teams means a full day on the road, or more.
