The Fleming Arena seems comparable or better than six of the other eight arenas. I also note that the Bison football team was 12-0 at Pan Am Stadium. Sometimes facilities and program quality do not correspond.
The Wayne Fleming Arena didn't stop the Winnipeg ICE from putting up a 148-44-3-0 for the three seasons they called the place home (one other season was in the Regina bubble), so it would seem to me that venue shouldn't really be an issue.

Wayne Fleming is not exactly a glamourous rink but it provides all the essentials plus a few extras.

I do agree that it's cyclical, hopefully the new coach will provide a breath of fresh air for the program. I'm looking forward to checking out the team in person when they start the season.

➤ LU: Lakehead kicks of preseason in Manitoba

Quick Summary
Lake: Massie (01:47 1st) , Mack (11:08 1st) , Mack (05:43 2nd) , Van Unen (10:14 3rd) , Pouliot (14:08 3rd)
Man: H. Ostir (02:04 2nd) , J. Paulhus (12:38 2nd) , N. Basarab (06:18 3rd)
Goal: Lake: Wright (35 shots, 32 saves); Man: Harkness (28 shots, 23 saves)

This was a bit of a strange game where a lot of Bison talent was left in the stands. Nevertheless, it did answer some questions about this Bison squad. First, here’s how they lined up:

Manitoba
Goal
1 Harkness (30 Thornton)

Defence
16 Hartje - 24 Wareham
25 Calder - 4 Malchuk
5 Casey - 9 Thiessen

Forwards
11 Ostir - 19 Arpin - 20 Apetagon
10 Paulhus - 29 King - 26 Boucher
14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab
23 Fawkes - 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter

Scratches
G 34 Hawryluk - 35 Murphy
D 6 Fry - 8 Toth - 27 Gottfried
F 17 Veloso - 18 Hooker

Lakehead
Goal
31 Wright (30 Aiken)

Defence
18 Jette - 3 Whittaker
23 Massie - 5 Turpin
2 Borbely - 28 McNeill - 8 Van Den Hurk

Forwards
14 Van Unen - 27 Mack - 15 Ho
11 DeGrazia - 17 Gerrie - 21 Pouliot
16 Blackwell - 29 Edwards - 25 Massie
19 Stiles - 9 Smith - 24 Miles

Scratches
G 1 Cicigoi
D 4 Wojciechowski - 22 Williams
F 10 Badalamenti - 13 Fox

The apparent Bison top line was dismantled for this game. Dylan Thiessen was moved to defence, and Colton Veloso and Jonny Hooker never suited up.

Thiessen had an eventful night on the blueline. One must give him credit for going back there. Less than two minutes into the game, he had the puck on the RW side of his own goal and went to throw it around the boards. But oops. He picked the short side as Simon Harkness was en route to cover the LW post. Mid-way through the period he surrendered a break-away on a turnover and it was 2-0 for the Thundermutts. D’oh.

Thiessen turned things around in the 2nd period when he made a silky-smooth PP pass to Hayden Ostir to make it a 2-1 game. The Bisons did manage to dominate the 2nd and 3rd periods, outshooting Lakehead 26-17 over that span.

However, with the game tied 3-3 mid-way through the 3rd period, Harkness whiffed on a shot from Josh Van Unen to restore the Lakehead lead. Then LU added a PP goal for insurance. While one could not blame Harkness on the first two goals, this was the kind of comeback win that a good goaltender can achieve for his team.

The Mutts did dress 21 players (seven defencemen). That helped when two players were assessed 10 minute misconducts on separate occasions.

I also found out that the Mystery Man in #5 is defenceman Brandon Casey. He was paired with Thiessen and covered effectively for the most part. Blueline returnees Parker Malchuk and Chase Hartje were good at carrying the puck, but it seems that defence-first is this year’s motto. No end-to-end rushes from Hartje in this one. Newcomers Owen Wareham and Kian Calder looked okay to me.

The Herd is now 1-2-0 and this was Lakehead’s first game.

This game was played on Thursday night to open the Clippers’ tour through British California. I believe that this was the first game between these teams. It is still not listed on the Holy Trinity schedule. They are now 2-0-0 against colleges and 0-2-0 against the CW.

I was one of the select group of hockey fans to attend this game. It is fun to watch a game as a neutral observer every once in a while. The cliche for this one was “the score was no indication of the play”. Here’s how they lined up:

Regina
Goal
35 Meger (30 Evanoff)

Defence
3 McCabe - 7 Sass
4 Reimer - 2 King-Cunningham
32 Third - 16 Schmidt

Forwards
9 Shindle - 23 Pearce - 11 Runke
22 Asham-Moroz - 14 Culling - 12 Houk
29 Doucet - 27 Barlage - 8 Brook
28 Christian - 21 Borysiuk - 17 Barnstable

Scratches
G 31 Anders
D 20 Holoien
F 10 Davis - 18 Whyte - 19 Bjorklund

Lakehead
Goal
1 Cicigoi (30 Aiken)

Defence
4 Wojciechowski - 8 Van Den Hurk
3 Whittaker - 22 Williams
28 McNeill - 5 Turpin
2 Borbely

Forwards
11 DeGrazia - 17 Gerrie - 21 Pouliot
9 Smith - 24 Miles - 10 Badalamenti
16 Blackwell - 29 Edwards - 25 Massie
15 Ho - 14 Van Unen - 19 Stiles

Scratches
G 31 Wright
D 18 Jette - 23 Massie
F 13 Fox - 27 Mack

Goaltending was the biggest difference in this game. Last year, Meger’s numbers were 1-7-0, 5.04 GAA, and .841 S%. He played about a third of Regina’s games. Adam Evanoff was their #1, and he was on the bench.

For Lakehead, Cicigoi’s numbers were 10-5-0, 2.61 GAA, and .919 S%. Last night’s starter Max Wright was 8-3-0, 2.49 GAA, and .920 S%. Those numbers go a long way to explaining both games.

The Nor’westers went 2-0-0 and are now finished their pre-season. Regina falls to 2-3-0.

Game 2 in the Cold Lake Series goes to the Evil Monkeys, and raises their pre-season record to 4-4-0. The Banjo-Mutts must be concerned about their 1-4-1 record. They open the regular season in Winnipeg on Thursday.

I can’t believe it’s 2023 and it seems harder than ever to track down some of these exhibition scores.
It's exhibition. A lot of schools probably don't have their student help to do a lot of this stuff. Some schools can't even put scores up during the regular season.

Afternoon games often tend to be absurd, and this one was just that. Here’s how they lined up:

Regina
Goal
30 Evanoff (35 Meger)

Defence
28 Christian - 4 Reimer
3 McCabe - 7 Sass
16 Schmidt - 2 King-Cunningham
32 Third

Forwards

Manitoba
Goal
30 Thornton - (34 Hawryluk)

Defence
16 Hartje - 8 Toth
24 Wareham - 4 Malchuk
5 Casey - 25 Calder

Forwards
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso
11 Ostir - 19 Arpin - 20 Apetagon
14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab

Scratches

F 23 Fawkes - 26 Boucher - 29 King

On paper, this was a much stronger Bison lineup than the one on Friday night. The shots ended at 31-31, which was a fair indication of the play. A pair of quick goals early in the 2nd gave Regina the cushion they needed. The same thing happened in the 3rd, with goals at almost identical times.

The Bisons finish the pre-season at 1-3-0 and Regina is even-Steven at 3-3-0.

With two of the CW’s four opening series starting on Thursday night I had one less day to do a thorough roster examination of all teams. So that will have to wait.

Neither the Bisons nor Banjo-Mutts tore up the league in the pre-season. However, Sask played Regina, Calgary, and Alberta and the Bisons played Briercrest, Regina, and Lakehead. None of Sask’s games were uploaded to LeagueStat.

The last time these played was last November and both games were tightly contested with each side picking up a win.

I am annoyed that the Bisons are having to play Friday afternoon due to a Bomber game at the stadium. Why not Saturday/Sunday? That’s what normally has happened.

This series goes Thursday in the Town of Bedrock and Friday up in Edmontown. The Dinos had by far the most impressive pre-season in the CW. Since they finished first last year, they have to be big favourites here. The Mythical Mutants had to cancel one pre-season game due to injuries. So they might not be at their best for this series.

This Friday night/Saturday afternoon series has the best potential of this opening weekend. The Evil Monkeys pulled off a sweep of Sask to raise their pre-season record to .500. So it is hard to say just what to expect of them. The T-irds’ record may not e as impressive as it looks. They played the SFU Globetrotters, Holy Trinity, and NAIT.

Quick Summary
Sask: J. Pillar (08:50 1st) , C. Stebbings (12:42 1st) , C. Stebbings (01:51 2nd) , D. Holt (04:15 2nd) , R. Pelletier (17:02 2nd) , T. Prefontaine (18:59 2nd)
Man: C. Hartje (06:34 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Kooy (25 shots, 24 saves); Man: Harkness (28 shots, 22 saves), Thornton (19 shots, 19 saves)

On a positive note, the Bisons won the 3rd period after a goaltending switch. Here’s how they lined up:

Manitoba:
Goal:
1 Harkness - 30 Thornton

Defence:
16 Hartje - 27 Gottfried
8 Toth - 4 Malchuk
25 Calder - 24 Wareham

Forwards:
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 17 Veloso
20 Apetagon - 19 Arpin - 11 Ostir
14 Zimmerman - 28 Behun - 21 Basarab
10 Paulhus - 29 King - 26 Boucher

Scratches:
G 34 Hawryluk
D 5 Fry - 36 Casey
F 12 Trimble - 13 Sutter - 23 Fawkes

Saskatchewan:
Goal:
30 Kooy (31 Ross)

Defence:
28 Kinniburgh - 7 Collins
9 Prefontaine - 14 Gavias
2 Jordan - 21 Jaquet

Forwards:
18 Loschiavo - 27 Pelletier - 12 Ball
25 Kaluski - 19 Pillar - 16 Holt
11 Petruic - 23 Tkachuk - 15 Stebbings
17 Rumsey - 20 Sorensen (10 Keeler)

Scratches:
G 32 Hobbs
D 4 Bortis - 6 Rinehart - 22 Gross
F 5 Faith - 8 Saleski - 13 Jacobson - 26 Hayes

Sask’s #10 Keeler was injured early, colliding with the boards on a foiled scoring opportunity. I put down the lines post-injury.

Since it is getting late on a weeknight (a rare time for a Bison game), I cannot go over all the scores. To start with there was may more contact in this game than the last weekend’s two exhibitions combined. However, a few Bison problems resurfaced: one, they can dominate territory for long stretches and not get shots on goal and two, the goaltending remains off-and-on.

There was a stretch in the 2nd period where the Bisons appeared to have all four lines rolling, then came a soft backhand goal from the face-off circle.

In any event, Thornton looks like the best bet in the nets. A lot hinges on him finding what it takes to be a starting CW goaltender.

The rematch goes Friday at 2:30 p.m., which is sooooo stupid. If you don’t have CanadaWest.tv, the Sask story says that HuskieFan.ca will have live audio. The link is above.

Ouch. Rough start for the Bisons. It will be interesting to see if they can build on their garbage-time success from last night after a short turnaround.

With a lot of game overlap, and the Jets, Bombers, and Blue Jays all on TV, this game evaded my radar. Despite some key losses from last year’s roster, it seems the Bluegars still have a decent enough line-up.

The advantage of a late game in the Pacific time zone is that I can always see a large percentage of it. As such I could bear witness to the T-irds completely dominating the Evil Monkeys. The SOG were a bit deceptive in that regard.

The Jets have a home preseason game the same night as the Moose vs. Bisons game... I expect there will be several Moose players in the Jets lineup that night, so the Moose squad will be as green as a garden salad. I wish I could be in two places at once that evening, I'd love to see how the Bisons fare.

I was able to catch a fair bit of this game. The Bluegars held a 4-2 lead entering the 3rd but allowed the Banjo-Cats to get back in the game, and tie it up with just a fraction of a second remaining. However, the Bluegars recovered and won it in less than 30 seconds of overtime. In a twist, Regina scored on both of their 3rd period shots to get the point, and MRU scored on their only shot of overtime. Those stats may not be accurate. They said Regina had 6 shots in overtime, and there just wasn’t the time.

I did not see too much of this game, but UBC was ahead all night. It was a 3-1 game late, then UBC got an empty-netter and the Evil Monkeys got a PP goal to improve the look of the scoreboard. So, is UBC that good? Or has Alberta taken a step back? The Monkeys were 4-4-0 in pre-season, against good teams, and UBC was 5-0-0, against Holy Trinity, BCIHL, and ACAC teams.

MRU: C. Blake (15:12 1st) , S. Moe (02:43 2nd) , S. Moe (09:25 2nd) , C. Hanus (15:13 2nd) , C. Hanus (14:44 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (45 shots, 40 saves), MRU: Farkas (27 shots, 26 saves)

With a lot of game overlap, and the Jets, Bombers, and Blue Jays all on TV, this game evaded my radar. Despite some key losses from last year’s roster, it seems the Bluegars still have a decent enough line-up.

UBC: J. Lee (04:53 1st) , T. Rask (07:05 2nd) , S. Mutala (12:18 2nd) , T. Rask (13:26 2nd) , C. McDonald (08:07 3rd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (27 shots, 22 saves), UBC: Lane (27 shots, 26 saves)

The advantage of a late game in the Pacific time zone is that I can always see a large percentage of it. As such I could bear witness to the T-irds completely dominating the Evil Monkeys. The SOG were a bit deceptive in that regard.

UBC went Bear hunting and came out with a sweep!
IMO, Alberta took a step back with this years recruiting class, but I expect Marple will bring in a player or two during the break?
USask and Mount Royal look to have weakened, while Calgary looks like the early favourite to beat in CanadaWest.

Outside of Tyler Soy in 2018/19…I can’t really recall Alberta bringing in guys over the break. I think they will need to this year though.

This is a funny bye weekend for the Bisons, with three games spread over five days. These could also be their toughest opponents of the season. The Moose have a lot of blue-chip prospects and players with NHL experience already assigned to camp. The UND team is, as usual, very highly ranked in the Excited States. The USCHO poll has them at 7th. There could be more preview stories about that game coming up.

It does not look like the Bisons are uploading stats to LeagueStat for either game. FWIW, the Bisons are 2-4-0 against the Moose in past games. In recent years they had a scrimmage or two where no scores were reported.

Quick Summary
Moose: C. Lucius (17:27 1st) , C. Golder (11:46 2nd) , W. Bongiovanni (14:33 2nd) , C. Conrad (03:48 3rd) , N. Chibrikov (07:54 3rd)
Man: P. Malchuk (16:24 3rd)
Goal: Moose: Milic (12 shots, 11 saves), Bisons: Thornton (57 shots, 52 saves)

The Moose dressed a few Manitoba boys in their line-up tonight. Here are the links to their Elite Prospects pages:
- Colt Conrad
- Dawson Barteaux
- Keaton Jameson - former Bison
- Mark Liwiski
- Stelio Mattheos

The live links were not uploaded (at least to my notice) until after I got home from the game.

The first star (by a LOT) was Bison goaltender Kolby Thornton. In the 1st period he faced 23 shots and surrendered just one goal. That one was by 1st round draft choice Chaz Lucius who was gifted a turnover in the left-wing face-off circle and picked a corner.

In the 2nd period, Carson Golder made it 2-0 on a break-out from the Moose end up the entire length of the ice, and converted a pass from Danny Katic. Wyatt Bongiovanni made it 3-0 after a period of sustained pressure.

The best goal of the night was converted by Colt Conrad on a pass from Thomas Caron, making it 4-0 in the 3rd. Nikita Chibrikov made it 5-0 on a powerplay. The Bisons replied on a powerplay of their own, with defenceman Parker Malchuk pinching in from the point.

So, on to the Excited States to face the UND Flickertails/Fighting Sioux/Fighting Hawks on Saturday night. The re-match with the Moose goes Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Iceplex.

The Evil Monkeys looked lesser than their usual banana-throwing selves last weekend. The Bluegars have lost some top tier talent from last year’s roster. There may not be room for both of these teams in the CW upper echelons this year.

The T-irds had a weak pre-season schedule, but sure looked good against the Evil Monkeys. If they’re as good as I think they might be, they need to put the boots to the Banjo-Cats on the road. Like they did on home ice in last year’s quarter-finals.

I looked at the Moose roster and it was pretty legit, there were a lot of veterans in that lineup so a tough assignment for the Bisons. I'd love to see some highlights from that game, I wonder if any will be posted?

Interestingly the game sheets still have Mike Sirant listed as Bison HC... force of habit?

Also interesting that there is a full slate of exhibition games this weekend for the Bisons now that conference play has already begun. Do they typically go all out or is this back to preseason mode?

I got in late in the 2nd period and, since all four games started at 8:00 CDT, I had to stick with just the one. I picked this one. It was a good choice. The rest were blow-outs, and this was a comeback OTW for the Bluegars. The good news for the Evil Monkeys is that they now have a point in the standings. The Bluegars are 3-0-0, with two OTWs in that total. The rematch is in Cowtown on Saturday.

Bedrock U has 3 straight wins this year, and 26 straight in conference play. They also hold the record for consecutive U-Cup losses, with 12! Their last U-Cup win was a round-robin win over Brandon in 1981. Holy Trinity at least made it respectable. The last Dino goal was an empty-netter.
