The Battle for Eighth! Unfortunately, only six teams make the playoffs. That said, with just 6 games left the Bisons have a great chance to steal 6th place. They need four points this weekend, and four more against the Mythical Mutants next weekend. Somehow, the Bisons lost twice to Holy Trinity back in November. That was their low point of the season. Those were Trinity’s only wins of the season.

This was the annual Saddledome game with almost 10,000 fans in attendance. Twice the Dinos of Bedrock U took the lead, and twice the Bluegars tied it up. The shoot-out went MRU’s way. They outshot the Dinos 41-20, so I guess they deserved the win. The YouTube highlight package was very good.

Right now, these teams would meet in the quarter-finals. This series should be as good of a watch as the Battle of Calgary. Both sides could use a sweep if they want to break into the top three.

MACEWAN GRIFFINS (6-17-1, 8-21-1, OHT35 #23)

This is a key series in the battle for the 6th and final playoff berth. The Family Guys have a 3-point edge over the Banjo-Cats, but have just four games left on the schedule. They hold an 8-point lead on the Bisons. However, they visit the Bisons next weekend. The Bisons will hope for a split here, so that they would make the playoffs with sweeps of Holy Trinity and the Mythical Mutants, and a split when they close in Saskatchewan.

For some reason, Holy Trinity scheduled this to start at 12:30 p.m. local time. The Bisons started fast, scoring on 3-out-of-4 powerplays and outshooting the Spartans 19-8. Thereafter the Bisons tended to cruise along, with leads of three and then two goals, while being outshot 44-13. Hayden Ostir returned to the lineup and scored a goal. The win keeps the Herd’s playoff hopes alive.

Big win for the Banjo-Mutts here. The CWTV video kept stalling for this game so I switched over to the Calgary-MRU game. If the Evil Monkeys lose on Saturday, they will likely finish 5th, and need three straight road series victories to win the conference title. Sask pulled even on points after this win, but have two games in hand, namely those two make-up games against Holy Trinity.

Regina was leading 2-1 when I switched games during intermission. The Family Guys outshot the Banjo-Cats 23-9 in the 2nd period, and took a 3-2 lead. The 3rd period was even in shots (9-9) but Mac scored four goals. The Bisons will be hoping that Regina wins the re-match.

Oddly, the Bisons’ destiny is basically in their own hands. The Bisons need a sweep of MacEwan (who have just those two games left on their schedule) and Saskatchewan, plus Regina must lose one of their four games (against Holy Trinity and Bedrock U). Then comes the tiebreaker, to be addressed!

The Banjo-Cats have really been playing poorly lately. They have these flat periods in every game it seems.

This sets up next weekend’s series between the Family Guys and the Bisons. As stated, if the Bisons win all four of their games, both Manitoba and MacEwan would finish with 17 points. If Regina loses at least once (which seems likely), we would head to a tie-breaker. The linked regulation states the process:

1. Two teams tied:
The following shall determine the final league standings:
a) The best win/loss record in head-to-head games between the two teams.
b) If still tied, the number of wins in league play.
c) If still tied, the best goals for/goals against differential in league play.

Criteria (a) and (b) would both fail, so it comes to (c). MacEwan is now -41 and the Bisons are -62. So, technically, the Bisons’ destiny is in their own hands. However, the practicalities are the problem. Even if the Bisons sweep MacEwan with 3-goal wins, that would reduce the -21 differential gap on a -9 differential gap. That means they would need a 5-goal margin in one game, and a 4-goal margin in the other, against Sask.

The Bisons have a mighty big Task ahead of them if they wish to secure a playoff berth. They must beat the Family Guys twice this weekend, in regulation, and then sweep the Banjo-Mutts next weekend. In the process the Bisons’ pluses and Mac’s minuses must add to 21.

Saturday is the final regular season game for seniors Chase Hartje, Dylan Thiessen, and Colton Veloso.

The Bisons started out on fire. The 1st period was fast-paced and back-and-forth. There was a stretch of over 5 minutes right off the bat without a whistle.

The big problems for the Bisons were their PK and goaltending.

On the PP, MacEwan was 3-for-7 officially, but their 3rd goal was just seconds after a Bison penalty expired. The Bisons themselves were 1-for-2 on the PP, but also surrendered a shorthanded goal near the end of the game.

That 3rd goal for the Family Guys was in my opinion the back-breaker. The Bisons had just killed a penalty and MacEwan just dumped in a floater to get a faceoff in the Bison end. Hawryluk misjudged it and suddenly a tight game was then 3-1. It seemed that the Herd could never get a save when they needed one. This is unfortunate because they have been getting stellar goaltending for a while now, especially from Hawryluk. In save percentage, Hawryluk ranks 7th (.908) and Thornton ranks 10th (.898).

The win gives the Mythical Mutants their first playoff berth.

After the MRU-Sask game was over, I saw the ending of this one. The Evil Mnkeys had been down 2-0, but came back to tie the game. From when I started watching (about 5 minutes left), the T-irds dominated play until they scored. There were 46 minutes in penalties, so the return match could be fiesty.

What a comeback! This was Senior’s Night, as the last regular season home game for the three departing seniors, namely Chase Hartje, Colton Veloso, and Dylan Thiessen. All three of them scored, and they were the three stars.

There was no scoring in the 1st period, and the Family Guys led 1-0 after two. This set up a crazy 3rd period. Dylan Thiessen scored on the PP in the first minute. However, the Mythical Mutants scored two shorthanded goals (Brendan Boyle after 6 and Kole Gable after 13 minutes) to take a 3-1 lead. With Kolby Thornton pulled in favour of an extra attacker, Riley Zimmerman scored with 1:10 to go, and Colton Veloso tied it up with 18 seconds left.

The 3-on-3 did not produce a goal, so off to a shootout. Thornton stopped all three shooters from The Family Guys, and Hartje scored for the Bisons for the victory.

I saw a lot of this game, and it was a terrific game and a very high quality broadcast. This would have been a good U-Cup semi-final. The T-irds took a too many men penalty with 7 seconds left, and the Evil Monkeys scored the OT winner on that PP. It was a fabulous win for the Monkeys, but a quick gander at the standings will tell you that they will finish 5th unless a Tier 2 team wins a game or two.

Re: UBC-Alberta

Went to both games this weekend at Clare Drake Arena.
Helluva series.
UBC HC Sven Butenschon has done an excellent job transforming the T-Birds from perennial also-rans to a legitimate contender.
As some of you know I did 13 seasons of radio for the Golden Bears prior to the current stint with the Oilers.

In those 13 seasons Alberta NEVER lost in Vancouver...

Well UBC is a different animal now.
They are really deep up front. They have 13 forwards with Major Junior experience, including former Edmonton Oil King Josh Williams who had 82 points a couple seasons ago and has had a very quiet season.
They have a couple of D who ran WHL powerplays: Jake Lee and Connor McDonald.
Lee, from Sherwood Park, ALTA is the best player I have seen in the Canada West this season.
A 6'2" LD who can really skate and plays an all-in game. I believe he could play in the AHL right now!
The T-Birds play a smart, structured game.
UBC goalie Cole Schwebius stole the game on Friday for the T-Birds as Alberta came on after a poor start.
Alberta netmider Ethan Kruger was really good last night.
The Golden Bears are going to have to win on the road to make it to Nationals.

There’s no playoff tension this weekend, but byes and match-ups are at issue. Barring a further upset by a Tier 2 team, the Banjo-Mutts will finish 4th and host the Evil Monkeys next weekend. If, however, there is an upset, the Mutts are 2-2 v. Alberta, 0-2 v. Calgary, and 1-3 v MRU.

This was not as bad as the score would suggest. The Banjo-Mutts were able to score goals in bunches, which magnified the results.

The Bisons outshot the Mutts 13-12 in the 1st period, but trailed 1-0 until the last 10 seconds. Sask made it 2-0 at that point, but Jackson Arpin the scored with .7 seconds left to make it 2-1.

The Mutts scored their first bundle of three goals in two minutes early in the 2nd to chase Ross Hawryluk from the Bison goal. Kolby Thornton entered the goal and gave up one more to end the period, trailing 6-2. However, a two goal bundle with less than five minutes to go inflated the scoreline.

Captain Hooker notched his 12th goal of the season, a very tidy total on a team struggling to score.

The Bluegars entered the night 3 points out of first, and ended two points back. They built a 3-0 lead, but then the T-irds turned it on and looked impressive in mounting a 4-3 lead of their own. However, the Bluegars scored with 37 seconds left, and took the W in a shootout.

Here’s how the top of the table could look:

- If UBC gets a point, they get 1st.

- If MRU (in regulation) and Calgary win then there’s a 3-way tie between MRU, Calgary, and UBC: I believe MRU would be 1st due to head-to-head, and if Calgary beats Regina by two then they’d get 3rd.

- If MRU and Calgary lose in reglation and Sask wins, then we have a 3-way tie for 2nd. MRU would get 2nd, Calgary and Sask would go 3rd/4th depending on plus/minus. Calgary now has a +3 lead.

- The two-way ties were addressed in the Weekend Preview.

This gives the T-irds their first time in first place since the Leafs were a Stanley Cup contender.

I haven't watch a single Canada West game this season. Will definitely be taking in the Alberta vs Saskatchewan series. Usually this would be a Canada West final.
