For my dad’s birthday, earlier this week I bought tickets for next Wednesday’s game, really close to the action. AHL tickets are so cheap compared to the NHL that I couldn’t resist and got myself a random ticket for tonight as well! I guess I’ll have to go to Trois-Rivières to see the Lions at some point this season, too.

The crowd at the Place Bell is great, can’t wait to see how it will be for the season opener with many upcoming prospects freshly promoted. I’m also curious to see which Armia will show up on ice, he has the tools to dominate the league if he wants to.

I don’t know much about the baby Nucks roster, who should I keep an eye on tonight? Podkolzin, but who else, Räty? Klimovich?

Abbotsford Canucks Opening Night Roster
There isn't a lot, that's for sure. The Canucks farm system is definitely hurt by no first round picks in 2020 and 2021 and just horrible drafts in general in those years. Nothing to show for them except a couple guys still in college/Europe they might sign.

All eyes are on Podkolzin. Their #1 goalie, Arturs Silovs, is also one to watch. You mentioned Raty, he's definitely another one, being one of the main pieces in the Horvat trade. He's slow as molasses though so I'm not sure what his future looks like. The Canucks are high on a couple undrafted prospects, mainly defenceman Cole McWard, who was a late, late cut from camp, and forward Arshdeep Bains.

I guess another I'm interested in too is D Filip Johansson, Minnesota's first round pick in 2018 who they didn't sign. He's being playing in the SHL and finally making his NA pro debut. He's got a lot of skill but there are questions about his defence and decision making.

Mailloux flashes alot of upside, he is constantly improving since day 1 of the rookie camp. Really impressive.

he seems like a sure bet for the nhl. just don't no if he can be a #2 with PP time or a 5/6 dman. The AHL is the right place to learn positional play and understanding what he needs to do to be a NHL player.

Maybe Armia will actually enjoy Laval. He still gets his bag of cash except now there's no pressure for him to actually work hard...
now if only he can sway Gally to join him - they both can be great leaders for our AHL club, getting paid a ridiculous amount.

9 powerplays for Laval to 2, you gotta change something when your pp is that terrible.

Also, just send Bisson to the A and tell him to never come back. That guy is trash

People need to remember Heineman and Primeau AHL start when looking at Roy.

Or Poehling's first game. Or Lindgren's first 3 NHL games. Or Tokarski's playoffs. Or Pitlick's first season.

He's been great these two games though.

This is the fan base that has a bunch of people putting 6 homegrown dmen on the team in a few years.

This is a fan base where you can't say anything bad about anyone unless they're unanimously hated.

Jumping the gun on players is being a Habs fan 101.

Everyone is great and amazing and everyone will be a good, or better player in the NHL.

Need to get a better vet goalie than Mann I think. I know we can't get Primeau there but we've got a pretty decent club with inexperienced goalies. I'm sure Dobes will be find mid-season but I would think we would want this group to make the playoffs for extra ice time.

From what I saw, Laval need to get defenders that don't put the puck on opposing forwards' sticks to give them a free run at the goalie.

If only we had a vet goalie we could spare.

The AHL always has the weirdest schedules. Why does the entire league have 3 days off and zero Thursday games for any team until December 14th? Is it because that's a popular date for alternate venue events? Even then the only Thursday games that are booked seem to be staggering around Christmas and the all-star break. I'm guessing cause there's a lot of Friday-Saturday-Sunday stretches as Wednesday is the only weekday that frequently has games.

I think because the product isn't in high demand they choose nights where more people can attend and aren't on work nights.

I just think it's weird as hell to have three days off league-wide after like 1-2 games to open the season. You'd think there'd be at least 1 game even if other days were stacked.

Was at the game on Friday. Houle not playing Mailloux on the 1st PP wave is peak Houle.

Roy looks amazing. NHL ready, but we should probably let him cook.
Mailloux looked fine defenseively, but a bit more tentative offensively than usual. he was playing it safe.
Dobes was meh.

Our team looked more talented than Abbotsford and mostly dominated the game, but there were tons of defensive breakdowns that led to goals.

Trudeau looked abysmal that game. Was noticeably awful.

Houle overplayed veterans as usual. Sucks for development.

To be fair Houle comes from whatever the opposite of bloodlines is. His dad was the worst GM in team history and he's just trying to stop living in his shadow. :sarcasm:

It's a tough line for Houle this year in my opinion. He's got a talented and young team. He needs to find the balance between development and winning. I think management is watching closely. If the focus is too much on winning and not development I don't think he will be resigned.

I honestly don't have faith in Houle.

Have any kids currently with the big league club actually gotten better under his tutelage?

He seems pretty old school and i don't particularly like that he calls his players out in the media - he really has no filter.

I really wish they would have hired someone else.

We'll see how it plays out but this org. cannot afford another shit AHL coach or else all this rebuild will be for nothing - and i don't have a good vibe about it.
