2023-24 Frank J. Selke Trophy finalists: Aleksander Barkov, Auston Matthews, Jordan Staal | Winner: Aleksander Barkov

Damn, my Leafs have a 99 point Selke finalist and a 69 goal Selke finalist amongst their forwards. Bruins don't stand a chance.
Series is over. The Leafs lost in game 7 and only the 69 goal scorer is the Selke finalist.

'Haha the Leafs are only good in the regular season, they can't win in the playoffs, though.'

'Omfg why did the guy that sucks in the playoffs get nominated for a regular season award?!?!!'

Regular season: Auston Matthews only scores goals! Assists are just as, if not more, valuable!
Playoffs: Why isn't Auston Matthews scoring goals? Anyone can get assists!

This should go to Jordan Staal or Barkov?

Also Matthews? I get that he is above average but none of his advance stats shows he should be a finalist

Clearly a reputation award like most of the subjective ones

The leaf hate on this site is insane. Not a leafs fan but watch Matthews play and if your into advanced stats take a look at his.

I don't get your point, he has good advanced stats but not "Selke good". Focusing only on the defensive metrics, they are nothing special, but of course he's a great net positive player because his offense is through the roof (but not as net positive as Barkov for example). His usage is also not that of a Selke guy, not a knock on his game, but simply put the role he plays should guarantee he's nowhere near top5 for Selke, but apparently it doesn't. If you compare Barkov & Matthews advanced stats there's really no question who should win it.

Some 5v5 stats

Goals against /60
Barkov 1.49 (3.43 GF, 69.74 GF%)
Matthews 2.56 (3.92 GF, 60.45 GF%)
Staal 2.66 (1.99 GF, 42.86 GF%)

xGA/60
Staal 1.79 (3.05 xGF, 63.07%)
Barkov 1.98 (3.11 xGF, 61.07%)
Matthews 2.48 (3.16 xGF, 56.04%)

Def zone starts / 60
Staal 12.74
Barkov 11.31
Matthews 6.09

Offensive zone start %
Matthews 60.75
Barkov 52.32
Staal 43.55

Matthews numbers are nothing to sneeze at but then again, they are not very different from McDavid or MacKinnon. Obviously great players all of them, but Selke?

Btw. for the Selke I think looking at numbers really is great, because defensive game is all about being effective at what you do. Like in the case of Barkov, I think his defensive game years ago *used to be* overrated because eye-test would show you both effort and a lot of elite defensive skills, while he hadn't really yet put it all together to actually have elite results.

I admit I didn't watch a lot of Matthews during reg. season, but my guess is something like that is going on here. People see a 69 goal scorer put in the defensive effort, making good defensive plays and blocking shots and people overhype that to mean "elite" defensively, while his numbers are way closer to those of McDavid or MacKinnon for example, than Barkov or other "elite" defensive centers.

Barkov here is the outlier, he has defensive numbers quite similar to true shutdown guys (though his usage is not quite that tough, but very tough for a #1C) while not giving up much in offense compared to the superstars. I think he'll win this and should win this based on the criteria that's been used for years, ie. more about "two-way" play than just pure defense like the shutdown warriors play night after night.

As a Canes fan I can say Staal has deserved this for years. This being the year that he’s getting this far proves the reputation based nature of such awards, as this wasn’t really a particularly great one by Staal’s standards.

If Staal was a Leaf, he probably would have 4 Selkes already.

Congrats to Barkov for his second selke.

Matthews is solid defensively and it's nice to see it recognized.

I probably would have Kopitar as a finalist.

Wondering 2 things:

1. What do the writers association members use to come up with their votes?

2. Does anybody here who is laughing at Matthews being considered have half a clue or even care about the answer to question 1?

Love the hate lol

I would love to know the writers rationalization of voting Marner and Matthews above players who actually dedicate their games to playing all defensive situations and do a great job of keeping pucks out of their net.

Serious question.

Which advanced stats and how do those advanced stats compare between the 3 of the nominees?
