Speculation: 2023-24 Armchair GM thread

I don’t think I would at 21. I’ve read some scouts think his ceiling is a 3rd/4th line center. He almost strikes me as a player like F.Jo—not great at anything. His skating does look a little awkward at times too.
And some other scouts say his ceiling is as a #2C. The guy is really big, knows how to play C, has been playing against men in a really good league, and has at least decent skating. Remember, scouts also had problems with ROR's skating, and recently Lundell's, yet both have turned out to be excellent picks.

Big guys often look awkward, especially when young, but those long strides cover a lot of ground. Small guys often look faster than they are, for the opposite reason.

I'd take another JEE in a flash at #21.

Do you remember when "dynamic" was the buzz word around here, so much so that it became a meme? I think "center" is headed that way.

But is he a center?
I’d be fine if that became a thing inside the draft room. Is he a center? No? Then he better be dynamic!

Would you guys trade Rossi to Pittsburgh for the 14th overall pick?

Personally wouldn't trade him for anything short of a top 10 pick yet, but if they ended up going that route it would depend on who they take.

I haven't been following these draft prospects as closely as I have in past years, but I've tried to read a little bit more lately and I keep coming away less and less impressed by the centers available, and trading Rossi+ to move up in general. Lots of guys who are either too slight to be a good bet to even end up as a center in the NHL, or guys who just don't seem to have the offensive upside to be a top six center. Just trying to piece together our realistic pool of options if we trade up to the 10-15 range... Moore, Dvorsky, maybe?... Yager, Danielson, Ritchie, Heidt, Brindley, Stenberg, Stramel... It's not that any of these guys aren't good or couldn't be a top six center, but how many of them are more certain bets to be top six centers than Rossi to the point where you trade Rossi+ for them? And how many of them could we still get at 21 or later?

I'm shifting more towards keeping Rossi and using the 21 (although I'd love to somehow keep this and add another first on top of it, but we're running out of ways to do that), Addison, the 2nds to try to move up and get another one of these guys who are usually ranked anywhere between mid first and early second round. I feel like if the quality of player we're going to get at 12 or 14 or 21 or 25 is fairly equivalent, maybe we're better off keeping more of the darts, including Rossi.

Absolutely. That gives us a shot at one of Danielson, Moore, Yager, Dvorsky, or a really good wing. All of those C’s have speed, size, or both far beyond what Rossi has. We might have to wait a bit longer for them to develop, but that fits our timeline. Rossi fits PIT’s timeline(now!) better, though I would argue that they could use a wing just as well.

That was because of me and my railing for Pastrnak in the draft. I fell in love with how dynamic he looked in the video's I saw, so people started making fun of "dynamic" as a result.

Still wish we had taken Pastrnak all these years later though!

Domino affect. Would you rather have Pasta or Kaprizov?

Depends on who is sitting at the 14th overall selection

I’d personally consider moving Rossi for any of the Moore/Dvorsky or better type players. After that, it doesn’t really seem to be a good idea. I’m pretty antsy to see where Moore goes. Some have him top 10. Others have him in the 10-20 range.

Drafting Pastrnak in 2014 would have very little effect on drafting Kaprizov in 2015, especially since Kaprizov was a 5th round pick.

A better example would be Pastrnak vs. Boldy and I would be fine making that swap.
Except Tuch was drafted in 2014 over Pastrnak. Instead of offering up Tuch, Minnesota offers up Kaprizov, Greenway and - who else? Maybe Joel Eriksson-Ek?

Or they play the expansion draft differently and don't offer up anybody. Drafting Pastrnak in 2014 doesn't mean that Kaprizov isn't on the team right now. Possible? Yes. Conclusive, no.

Possibly, but who knows. It's Chuck, we may have offered up the next 10 1st round picks.

In fairness to you, you were right. It's also why I won't be upset if they take a dynamic (skilled) wing instead of a center. Obviously I want a skilled center, but I'll settle for a skilled player.

I find myself a dynamic reader.
The way this guy flips a page will leave you breathless.

Latest nhl mock draft has us taking gauthier with stemberg and ritchie still on the board. Is he the definition of dynamic winger?

I think he's more of one of those high end grinders, but I could be wrong
