Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Didn’t Grier say they really liked Kovalenko?

"We really like the Kovalenko kid. We had talks about him with Colorado last year. He's going to come in and play for us right away. Give us something a little bit different than what we have, he's a competitive, north-south player. He's someone we're hoping we can grow with.

I don't buy anything Grier says about players brought in with draft picks. It's just his way of saying "see? I'm trying to find immediate help". It's the same as with Ostapchuk.

Why not? This feels like something you sorta decided based on nothing, no? I think Grier liked Kovalenko and I think Grier genuinely likes Ostapchuk. He’s very clear on why he likes those players — his comment about like, Noah Gregor, is super generic and feels like filler, his comments about Ostapchuk and Kovalenko seem genuine. I think Warsofsky does not like Kovalenko.

Which if he’s not actually playing and it’s really just moving his contract, I’d be surprised if he even cares what team it is.
It didn’t matter to players in previous instances like with Weber or Hossa so I’d be surprised if it mattered to Couture. I’m just not sure if we’ll be able to extract any value out of it at any stage.

OK, let me rephrase. I think the players he's bringing in that come with draft picks attached are secondary to the draft picks for Grier. I think he liked Ceci, but may not have taken him if there wasn't a 3rd as well. Same with Walman.

I think that’s probably true, yeah. I think he sees the draft picks as trade chips and the players are swings to see if they can be part of the future.

I wonder what Justin Faulk would cost and whether we're on his 15 team no trade list.
Hey I thought of him too! But the LNTC probably has us on it. STL is in a weird cap position next year where like they have limited space but also no one to resign. I thought maybe like Bordeleau and a 3rd or 4th for Faulk if he would waive.

A few other guys that I don’t think have been mentioned here that I want the Sharks to look at: Perbix (FA), Girard (Hodge won’t like this one), Manson (Hodge will like that one), Lindgren, Whitecloud, Hague

All of these are from teams that probably can’t resign them.

You're a little high for Thompson, Cagnoni, and Askarov for me. They...were decent nothing too good.

Smith A+, imo.

If you would have offered me a 45 point season last August I would have been thrilled. You then contextualize his 200' progression month by month (and as the 'talent' around him continued to be sold off), to the point where he was one of the very best 5v5 playmakers in the entire league and impactful on a shift by shift basis.

If you had concerns over Smith's style translating to the NHL prior to his debut then those should all be washed away by now.

And not only that but he's just scratching the surface. He teased a ceiling/ability that just you don't just readily find.

If he transitions back to center he'd be our Malkin. Hyperbole aside man the forward core is coming along very nicely
