Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Always been a fan of his. He was a guy I was hoping they would draft when they traded down in 2022.

We've picked up a few guys like him since then so I'm not sure we need to target him unless for pennies on the dollar.
Agreed. 5'11 but well built scoring forward. If you can get him for a 2nd and accelerate your development time by swapping such a pick, it would be worth it.

With Eklund, Celebrini, Smith, Graf, and maybe Hagens/Misa we're already small in the top 9. Nice to have, could likely give him some opportunity, but I'm equally happy to give those opportunities to bigger, younger, equally talented, and probably less ready Chernyshov and Musty.

I wouldn't turn down more good left wingers, but it's not like he's Seamus Casey and could fill an immediate hole.

I saw rumors that Mrco Rossi could be available but he's short so that doesn't really help

I'm on the 'we need talent first' bandwagon, but I certainly wouldn't be targeting 5'9 forwards. Konecky is another guy I could see moving with Philly potentially wanting to take their tank to the next level. I like both, but if you acquired either guy for assets, you probably need to flip Eklund for a defenseman.

In a vacuum, I probably don't pursue. In a world where we just drafted Martone and Buff offers Byram for Eklund, and we can get Rossi for our 2nd and Dal 1st. I'm probably game.

Is it just me that thinks Byram isn’t close to worth Eklund?

He's not perfect, but he's my favorite of the RFA d-men- Romanov, Dobson, Byram, and Miller. In a scenario where I could add Rossi and Byram for Eklund and (non-SJ) picks I think we're better. He could be a 22 minute a night #2 d-man which I value more than a solid first line wing, particularly if we've got Celebrini, Smith, Rossi in our top 6.

If we got Schaefer, I wouldn't do it though. Things don't hinge on Schaefer the way they did for Celebrini last year, but getting him completely alters our teams makeup.

Ah maybe that’s where we disagree. I see Byram as more a second pair than top pair guy. He’s definitely number 2 on that list of dmen for me but that’s also because I don’t really like Romanov or Miller (both being lefties that don’t have much offense).

I'm predicting this is going to be an announcement that Couture and the Sharks have accepted that he won't be able to play hockey anymore and have agreed to give the Captaincy to someone else on the team. Probably gets announced before the next season who the next captain is.

Yeah, gotta be a retirement announcement. Surprising that they are doing it before the end of season, but maybe they figure just gotta get it done ASAP. Plus this means that Weds can be a Couture Appreciation Night at the Tank or something.

My money's on 1. Toffoli, 2. Ferraro, 3. Celebrini as C next year but it won't be announced until after preseason. Doubt they'd give it to Macklin so early, but I could see it working either way.

I don't know enough about the player to comment (especially in regards to how well he defends), but here's a data point for some thought. Jake Walman has more points this year than Byram in 15 fewer games.
I thought Walman established himself nicely as a top pair Dman, even on a respectable team. Not sure he's a #1, but clear cut top 4, maybe 2/3. hes playing 21-22 mins a game for a cup contender in edmonton. I think if the sharks landed a 23 year old equivalent player for Eklund, it's a good swap.

I cannot stress enough the value of having an excellent D corps. I remember the 2008-9 D corps with Boyle, Blake, Ehrhoff, and Vlasic having 4 of the top 10 D scoring leaders for a chunk of the season. They won the presidents trophy even if they fell short in the PO's. You build a winner from the back end up. The sharks are built backwards to a degree (questionable G, horrific D, reasonable F) and it shows on the ice. They need to prioritize the back end over everything and anything this summer if they want to improve.

If that means moving Ek for a top pairing D, Im all in. If it means trading the dallas 1st and one of the wing prospects (musty) for a top 4D, Im all in. Whatever can be done to add a top pairing D to the Org needs to happen. And while I want them to add schaefer to secure the long term, I want them to add establish young NHL D now, so the kids can learn the NHL game without having tap matchups, top pair minutes, and all the pressure. If we get 2 legit NHL D, coupled with Ferraro and Liljgren, then the yound D (dick, Cags, schaefer, etc) can start in the NHL as a 3rd pairing with limited minutes and work their way in slowly, while the team remains competitive. I am NOT for throwing Mukh or Dick into top 4 roles off the bat. I dont want either saddles with a -30, and getting knocked around by opposition top lines.

Yeah, gotta be a retirement announcement.

I'm sure people know better than me, but for those that have LTIRetired (have to think Couture is going to LTIRetire, not actually file retirement papers with the NHL, because that would end his contract), did they make a public retirement announcement before the expiration of their contract? E.g., did Shea Weber do that? Chris Pronger? etc.

I agree, and I bet Toffoli. He's been amazing this year with the kids (the sleepover), the professionalism, and he potted 30 goals to lead the team. He is here at least 3 more years, so it wont be rotating like Ferraro who might have only 50-60 games left in teal (or might be dealt this summer even). Personally, I think Toffoli would make a great C.

Cooch's retirement needed to happen a while ago. Having no C on the ice for two years hurts. While the captiancy is largely symbolic, it is nevertheless meaningful. I remember when patyy and jumbo had the C, the team struggled some and the culture was mediocre. When pavs got it, it's like everything fell into place. Captain America was truly a great captain.

Toffoli is the perfect temporary (2-3 years) transitional captain until Mack takes the reins.

Good point, they might just keep it to "Giving up the C and officially going on LTIR" so it's everything-but-retirement.

Maybe fans have forgotten but 39 was an amazing Shark. I feel for the guy, it’s a lame way to go out. At least he didn’t have to suffer through the bottom finishes. Definitely seems like a LTIR retirement / step down from the C. Probably too early to hand it over to Mack so maybe the Sharks run next year with no C. No point in giving it to someone for 1/2 years

I mean, his 'retirement' is the only possibility for this. It's not like hes gunna announce some great comeback.

And it doesn't really matte if he officially retires and voids his contract or "retires" on IR. If he remains on LTIR, how does that affect the cap? I dont expect we spend to it anyways, but Grier would be wise to take on as many 1 year contracts as possible to spend up to the cap with the intent of either competiting for PO's in the event of a miracle, or getting more free picks at the TDL. After all, functionally trading cap space for free picks is a good deal if Hasso doesnt mind.

Uh, it matters to Logan whether he receives the rest of the money on his contract.
