What makes him unplayable in the nhl?
Doesn't create nearly enough offense to compensate for being a huge defensive liability. Devils currently have Seamus Casey playing in the NHL over him so it's not a case of a coach blindly favoring veterans either.

He'll be on the scrap heap soon enough. No reason to give up anything for him now. If we're trading for unproven prospects it should be the Askarov and Jiricek types who force their way out rather than the likes of Nemec and Brandt Clarke whose teams have lost faith in them despite investing significant draft capital and development time. They know their players better than anyone else.

Regression with a new (worse) coach isn't a reason to write him off. Played 20 mins a night last year in 60 games and looked solid for a 19 year old. New coach coupled with bad situation and struggling now. Asking price will likely be more reasonable now after this mess of a season and how NJD continues to be a puzzling and underachieving squad/organization with inept management.

New Jersey is fourth in the Eastern Conference and a few points away from being second. Hard to see how they are underachieving.

I really dont see a major value in adding more unproven 20 or 21 year olds. If the asking price is crazy low, then sure, take a swing and if it fails, it fails. But right now, the priority for Grier has to be adding proven NHL Blueline talent that is 27/28 or younger. Dobson types, not so much Nemec Types.

of course, that said, if the price is low enough, then sure. I dunno how low that price would go? Dallas 1st and a prospect like musty? I might do that. Even better if the prospect is one of Gush, Cardwell, or Bordy.

Obviously, Id love to add Nemec, but I assume the asking price will be pretty high, even still.

Other than Dobson, are there any other proven top 4 D in the 22-26 year old range that are hitting the market? Miller? Byram?

Jiricek couldn't crack the Blue Jackets and can't crack the Wild. There's no difference whatsoever between his and Nemec's performance so far.

Jiricek can be useful to a contending team even if his offense doesn't translate. Nemec will probably be a liability even if his offense translates.

Is $13M/year for a new RW in Marner for Celebrini too much? He's a UFA...

Chychrun is the best bet, and for thr rightb deal, you may be able to pry Cernak from TB

If that doesn't get in the way of filling the other holes that are more of a priority, I could see it. I view the two RHD vacancies and the 2C spot as more pressing positions to fill but the Sharks have a lot of cap space too and could do all that on top of Marner. I just don't see it as wise or likely.

Brandt Clarke is a +7 w/ 25 points in 52 games and a CF% of 58.3 in his age 22 season. WTF are you even talking about?

If you sign Marner you can staple him to Smith as your second line with Eklund and Celebrini your first. Or you drop Eklund to play with Smith as the second line.

Smith should be playing 2C next season with experienced linemates. He already looks much improved and ready to take over the C duties.

I guess you know better than the Kings coaching staff who play him 14 minutes a night at 5v5 despite not having Doughty for most of the season.

16 minutes a night. Pretty standard for a developing d man on the 3rd pair. He’s got his flaws for sure, but you’re acting like he’s some flat out bust w/ zero value. lol. Mike Grier would do backflips if he got Clarke.

At 5v5 Clarke has started 136 shifts in the offensive zone compared to 75 in the defensive zone. LA is heavily sheltering him even by the standards of a 22 year old defenseman. He's awful defensively and can't skate backwards or laterally at a NHL level. Butter soft. Not a Grier type of player at all.

The one trait that Grier has valued across the board more so than size is skating.

He has not drafted poor skaters with bad footwork. So Clark and Jiricek are not even options for Grier with their skating flaws.

Agreed. I expect him to acquire known quantities on defense via trade or UFA then use the 2025 or 2026 1st (Verhoeff looks sick) to find a #1.

Huh? Grier has drafted zero above-average skaters in the top three rounds in three draft classes outside of gimmes in Celebrini and Dickinson.

Isn't Sahlin Wallenius' main strength considered his skating? I think Grier has valued skating in defenseman but does not seem to value it as highly with forwards.
