Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Any which way that gets Goodrow off the team should be exhausted. We can trade him for a worse contract that has some actual use even if they suck. I’d trade him for Jarry and have him back up Askarov if they’re worried about optics here for some reason. We should be spending as much as possible to help Celebrini and the rest of the group.

Is Goodrow on the 4th line really an issue? I mean, I feel like we have bigger fish to fry. And I’m not talking about our current lineup which no longer has Granlund and has 3 top 9 injuries.

I don’t care if he’s on the 4th line on a team that has depth to push him there.

That said, one thing that bugs me a little about Goodrow is that when he first played for the Sharks, he was very exuberant on the bench, rallied people, riled everyone up, etc. This time around, he looks like his soul has been removed from his body, so I can’t tell if he’s actually a good mentor or if he’s angry and pouting. If it’s the latter, then yeah, get rid of him.

I'm not about to make any predictions, but I don't think Goodrow being on the team next year is a fait accompli. Safe to say the Sharks' brass didn't expect him to be just as bad as he's been this year, and since it's kind of hard to see much chance of a rebound, I think there's a legitimate chance that they're going to be discussing buying him out over the summer. I guess it sort of depends on how intent they are on being better next year.

It's not the most important thing since it's safe to say this team won't be angling for a playoff berth a year from now, but eliminating Goodrow from this roster for simply your bog standard 4th liner would probably mean a few fewer losses this season.

Goodrow is going to play out this season, have an injury for most of next season that keeps him out for a large chunk of time, then play sporadically in his final season with tons of healthy/not healthy scratches before fading into the ether.

How about this as a quixotic "game plan" for the 2026 season:

Sign a top-6 forward (e.g. Ehlers, say 8x7)
Sign a top-4 defenseman (e.g. Ekblad, say 8x7)
Sign a backup goaltender (say for 2 million)

Take Carson Soucy and J.T. Comphers' contracts for futures

Add the fee to these decent-but-not-untouchable assets:
Dickinson
Ferraro
2025 Dallas first
2025 Sharks 2nd
2026 Sharks 2nd
Wennberg
Mukhamadullin
Halttunen
Bystedt
Musty
Chernyshov
Cagnoni

Using ~half these assets:
Trade for a young, top-6 center (e.g. Mittelstadt)...perhaps Ferraro + Bystedt is sufficient
Trade for a mid-risk top-pairing defenseman (e.g. Byram)....say the 2025 picks + Wennberg and Musty get it done

Ehlers-Celebrini-Toffoli
Eklund-Mittelstadt-Zetterlund
Kovalenko-Smith/Compher-Compher/Smith
Goodrow-Graf-Dellandrea
Cardwell-Duehr

Byram-Ekblad
Walman-Liljegren
Soucy-Mukhamadullin
Thrun

Askarov
FA goalie

Even with Couture and Vlasic, it's still cap-compliant by the eye...isn't that a playoff roster? You'd probably like an upgrade on Ekblad and are missing a true top-line RW...but then the season after the cap goes up, Vlasic and Soucys's contracts are off the books (maybe Jones's buyout as well?), and the Sharks can go big-game hunting again. They'd still have plenty of assets remaining...

I would say Dickinson is untouchable for this Sharks team. There is just not defensive depth to even think about trading him imo.

If only if anyone could have predicted that Barclay was a horrible move. That deal didn't take hindsight as most of the board was pissed lol. Hodge will tell us about veteran leadership though.

Ok so... Goodrow sucks (I suspect it's more is totally unmotivated), but who cares? It made sense at the time, gritty playoff performing 4th liner ex-shark is available, money is irrelevant... what's the harm? I get why he did it. Has it worked out? No, but GMMG has made nothing but smart moves, this being the sole outlier. If this is the worst thing he's done... I'm stoked.

the hockey part
Warsofsky clearly seems to think Goodrow gives him a better chance to win hockey games than any of the Barracuda forwards.

All the whining is really about Warsofsky's lineup/roster management but it's coming from people who are somehow still in denial about how terrible the likes of Bordeleau and Gushchin would be if we played them in Goodrow's role.

There is nothing that stops the Sharks from scratching or waiving Goodrow and his cap hit will never be an impediment to anything we try to do.

i have never seen a group of people get so worked up over a 4th liner.
Did you miss the part where he is analytically the single worst player in the entire f***ing league? And he has played in our top-6 at multiple points this season? He's not even a 4th liner, he's literally a sub-replacement player.

Andrew Poturalski recall right on cue.

Have you not followed this team for its entire existence?

Goodrow, Haley, Goodrow again, Scott, Brown, Kearns, etc.

It's what we do here.
It was still stupid back then but at least you could argue putting Haley in the lineup over Donskoi or whoever was costing us playoff games (it wasn't).

Now there are no superior forwards being scratched in favor of Goodrow, we are objectively better off losing than winning games and we have infinite cap space for the next three years yet there are still fans robotically repeating the same complaints as if we're discussing the 2014 or 2019 team.
