So does mathews, tavares, nylander
Tavares yes, Matthews less so, and Nylander the least.
I wouldn't mind going after Tavares if he becomes available. He's 34 but still pretty effective. If you can do like a 3x$9m, I think he'd be great as a transitionary top 6 C.
I agree, but I doubt Tavares wants to come to SJ. He should want to chase a cup somewhere...

This is all moot because Marner and Tavares are both definitely re-signing

Toronto is convinced that everything is going great, they're not gonna break the band up until guys are on decline and have lost all value

Now they're coming to terms with Rielly entering his Vlasic death spiral, so naturally the fans want him gone, but it's like 2 years too late to move that deal, they're just gonna keep going as constructed and keep flaming out early

It's really important MG locks up his core one year earlier than the actual signing needs to happen, because of how rapidly the cap space is rising in the next three years.

In a perfect world:

This summer:
Eklund 8x8mil

Next summer:
Celebrini 8x12mil
Smith 8x9mil (if proven)
Askarov 8x7mil

=
36 million in 4 core players with 113 million cap space by 27-28 season would a major bargain for competition.

Others:
Zetterlund 6x5.75

I think Zetts could be an important piece for keeping the 3rd line competitive and keeping the 2nd line occupied until they find someone to make it even better. That's why I had him in a bit of lower deal.

In a grand scheme of things and in this scenario:

113 million cap space:

41.75 mil used
71,25 mil available

8.0 - 12.0 - ?
? - 9.0 - ?
? - ? - 5.75

7mil
?

Others:
1W: 7-8mil

2LW/2RW/3LW: ELC/Bridge/FA, could be anything between 3mil to 13mil
3C around 4-5mil is fine
4th line all around should be max 7mil

Defence:
Top 4: Around 30mil
Bottom pairing: anything below 5mil

Goaltending:
1b or backup: 3mil

It's going to need couple of bargain deals or ELC's to make it work smoothly if there is a clear window and it's important that there is a solid defence with at least one bargain deal.

It's not like the agents don't see the same projections as we do in making those contract demands. Whether they do the deal 7/1/26 or 7/1/27, the agents are going to be asking the same based on projections.

Still need to sign them all early just to clarify the cap position as we move into future offseasons, but we're not getting a bargain because we sign Macklin on 7/1/26 as opposed to 7/1/27.

Are we all emotionally ready for 2nd line center Dellandrea?

I’d honestly look to help a team out and take a center cap dump for a pick just to have some kind of center depth. Without Wennberg and Granlund it’s… grim.

I don’t know what’s worse - Dellandrea at 2C or Warsofsky going with Kunin and Goodrow on the 3rd line again.

He is the slowest learner in the league. “Perhaps it won’t be the worst line in the NHL this time!” - Warsofsky (as he tries it for the 40th time).

For one game, it’s fine. Once Wennberg comes back, he’ll be in that spot. Sturm will also be back to help out in this regard.

I think it would be hilarious if, now, Tavares actually wants to come to SJ.
if tavares can't handle us at our worst, he doesn't deserve us at our best

although it's a very, very interesting alternative universe to think about if JT signed here and the EK65 trade never happens

Great point. Why doesn't Barfsofsky just reach into his magical treasure chest of good players and play some of them instead?

Bro, what's he supposed to do? Wennberg is hurt, and if he does what you say and puts Kunin and Goodrow on the 4th line, then we are stuck with Grundstrom and Duehr on the third line. Does that sound better? No? You would rather call up Gushchin and Bords and fire Kunin and Goodrow into the sun even though Kunin is actually having a good year and Bords and Gush are almost certainly worse than even Goodrow as hockey players right now?

Wennberg is injured. Kostin is injured. Dellandrea is a gametime decision. Smith at Center without a vet (because Toff is also a GTD) is a bad idea. Injuries suck. Roster sucks. Sucks to suck.

Sturm will also be back to help out in this regard.
Technically, yes, but Sturm isn't really the sort of player who helps very much.

I was looking at our statistics and noticed that Sturm has lost almost five minutes per game compared to last season, is actually getting more offensive zone starts than the last two years, and is taking half as many faceoffs (per minute) as the last two years. He's riding an unusually high shooting percentage, so I think his points production, such as it is, is actually unsustainable.

I've been saying that I don't think Sturm is actually very good, he's just been better than the alternatives. Warsofsky seems to have decided the same (well, that and Sturm can't stay healthy either).

Of course, we don't actually have anyone better. Kunin (and no, I don't think he's actually showing that he's a worthy 3rd line forward or anything, he's just not quite as god-awfully bad as he was last year, but still shouldn't be starting on a legitimate contender) and Goodrow (not even vaguely an NHL-quality player) really are among our nine best healthy forwards, at least among those we're going to give a shot.

Everyone just needs to understand that being awful was already our doom this season and quit worrying about it. There's nothing Grier or Warsofsky could have done about it.

I mean, they might have a future - Goodrow does not and will not get another contract, and Kunin is not actually any good, he's just marginally better than he was last year (Kunin should not be a starter on a legitimate cup contender).

Grundstrom and Duehr aren't legitimate NHL players either, of course. We just don't have twelve healthy forwards who clearly belong on an NHL roster right now. We don't even have nine (it's arguable that we don't even have six, frankly). I would honestly rather play the young guys who might just be able to click than older guys who have already washed out.

It helps if it keeps Dellandrea from that spot. I’d rather see more kids but the Barracuda are competing for the playoffs so I’m fine with them staying there for the experience.
