Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

Granlund isn't remotely in the same Stratosphere as JT Miller and Rants.

Nope, but the contenders in need of 2Cs still need them. Rantanen's played a little C, but more importantly he can drive offense like a top C. The Miller, Petterson, Rantanen dominos were always going to fall first.

With Miller traded and Petterson likely staying in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Minnesota, Toronto, Colorado, and maybe NJ or WSH will target Granlund. The other top centers are Nelson (2C), Gourde (3C and injured), Bjugstad (3C). Vegas and TBL may also be interested though as a winger.

Hopefully the Islanders can make a run and reduce the pool further.

Keep in mind that the longer Grier waits the more teams change from buyers to sellers. I wouldn't be surprised to see Malkin on the move. Or Ryan O'Reilly. Or Backlund in Calgary if they start to fall.

10 games until the deadline, 7 games after 4 nations, 3 before. I'd probably be pulling the trigger before the four nations. Only an extra 7 games to help Smith and Celly, and you avoid a four nations injury risk. This also allows Granny and the team to have that time to prepare for their respective year end goals.

I'd bet Granny and Nelson get firsts.

I mean Miller barely got more than a first so I highly doubt it.

You may be right. That pick will probably be 10-15 places higher than what the others return however. Much better player with term (at a reasonable price), however. SJ will probably send back a 3rd as well (either as part of the trade, or to pay someone to retain).

The more I dissect this return for Miller, a player who is younger and just put up 100 points making only a couple million more than Granny with another year, the more I think many here are going to be woefully underwhelmed with whatever the return is.

32 year old signed at $8M for 5 years after this with locker room strife isn’t an appetizing asset, especially mid season. Add in a full NMC and the return was never going to be elite.

Granlund will fetch a 1st or a pair of 2nds and a prospect at worst.

I don't think there's going to be a lack of suitors for Granlund so long as he stays healthy.

Particularly with another center option being a massive question mark. Nelson is going to Minnesota or staying put in Long Island. Granlund is likely the best center on the market with Dallas, NJD, Winnipeg, and others needing a center in a big way. Going to be a sellers market with the east as tight as it is this year.

Vancouver made out like bandits in the JT Miller trade. On paper the trade helps nobody but the Rangers are trending way down and the lottery protection on that pick could land Vancouver an even better pick in 2026.

My bad. I thought he only had one more year left after this.

I also doubt Granlund gets the same as Pitts gave up. I just don't see it.

Yep I honestly think Grier should be super active shopping Granlund and take the best deal he can get before the 4 Nations. I would rather not risk an injury happening to Granlund at the 4 Nations as he honestly doesn't even look 100% for the past 1-2 months.
I'm not overly worried about the injury angle, but GMs will definitely be spending that time figuring out how to make their teams better and I'm not 100% any GM will trade someone currently playing in that tournament.

I would be shocked if NY doesn't make a huge push. The trade will ultimately be a late first, and Chytil, who's one nudge away from never playing again. I get it had to happen, but if I'm a Vancouver fan I'm not thrilled with the return.

Realistically, I don't know if Gourde has too much impact on the market for Granlund. Gourde is on pace for 30 points but is seen as a playoff type of guy. Granlund is on pace for 70 points but isn't seen as a playoff player.

The two teams I think make the most sense for Granlund are Winnipeg and NJ.

Winnipeg and NJ's 1sts would be late 20's too, that seems possible right? A guy like Ivan Ryabkin could fall there and that would be amazing haha

Playoff #grit and stuff had him right with Granlund on a lot of trade boards. I don’t see it personally, but just what the national types were conjuring up.

I think both of those make the most sense as well. NJD lacks a 1st rounder, but does have a trio of 2nds. Granlund won’t land us Nemec on his own, but curious how a deal like that could line up and what we’d need to add to make it happen.

Would be interested in Salomosson in a deal with WPG as well (in addition to some draft capital). Only played half of the AHL season, but good size and RH on the backend with solid production for an AHL rookie (plus solid SHL stats last year).

First Weekes with his stupid x-post, now Friedge on 32 thoughts wonder if Brandt Clarke might be available. Per Friedmann, the problem is that Clarke does not fit the style the kings wanna play (which is odd, since the GM in charge is the one that drafted the kid). Anyway: what would you offer for BC?

Not saying value-wise, saying that Gourde and Granlund are not remotely interchangeable in terms of team-building.

If you're pursuing Gourde, then you're strictly looking for a shutdown 3C. If you're pursuing Granlund, you're looking for a guy who is a legit top-6 center, but maybe isn't going to be a matchup guy. I just don't think a team looking for one of those guys will have interest in the other.

Aside from the fact that I don't think he's actually on the block and even if he were, the Kings would never trade him in-division?

I'd see if they'd bite on one of our non-Dickinson LHD prospects plus our 2nd. I value him similarly to Jiricek at the time of his trade.

Yes, and Grundstrom is only a Zarzh line combination away from his 15 goals, right? All these NHL staff just can't figure it out.

Put my son in the game
This statement is just objectively wrong.

Grundstrom had 40 goals in 236 games for LA, meaning he literally scored at a 14 goal pace for his career, his next worst pace was 10 goals and his pace this season jumped from 2 to 4.
