Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

I wonder who Grier would've picked if he had Morehouse and his own staff in place at that draft.
Yup. I honestly think he made the trade decision because he wanted three lottery tickets instead of one because he didn't trust DW Jr. to get that one theoretically easier (higher) pick right.

To me, the rebuild under Grier didn't start with that draft. Frustrating because they could've had him and his staff in place earlier and we could've had a more productive outcome, but I still have hope for Bystedt as a solid 3C, so it's not like all is lost.

5 years $4.1M for Will Borgen (who's had a rough year). RHD with size just get paid. I might give Ceci the four years he wants. I was hoping for 3x$4M, but it might be more like 4x$5M, which is nutty. You can find better than Ceci, but it won't be in free agency. There's not a RHD on the roster or in the AHL I'd rather have than Ceci, and the free agent options are pretty much Ekblad and Kovacevic. With cap increase there will be several contenders looking to outbid SJ for a top 4 RHD. I don't know that I want Ceci at 5, but I might do $4.5Mx4 just to know our RHD won't be something like Liljigren-Thompson-Vlasic.

Ceci could be a decent partner to break in Dickinson, Cagnoni, or Schaefer (should we get that lucky) as rookies as well.

Rather just keep throwing darts than commit that kinda money to him. He’s not the kind of d man that makes a team any better, he just is more valuable to us now because of the rest of the blueliners.

If anything that contract just makes me want to trade Ceci more.

I’d argue that keeping him prevents us from getting appreciably worse if we don’t have a suitable replacement. If we can’t actually land a right side D in FA, we’re depending on our prospects. Thompson isn’t a physical defenseman, so we’d be hoping Mukh steps in on his offside, and that’s a clear step down from Ceci rn

It is. I also would like to extend Ceci but not for that much term and/or money. He’s 31. I’d give him 2 years at most and then I’ll pay 4.5 max, but anything beyond is just irresponsible.

Ceci has been even better than I expected and I was bullish on the trade to begin with.

$5M will soon be #4/#5 money under a $100M ceiling if it isn't already. I'd offer him that deal.

I’d assume we’d have to send him to Robidas island at the end of the deal, if it’s long. We’re going to need to overpay significantly for short term deals (like the Wennberg signing). I’m just hesitant about trying to hit in FA, when were the worst team in the league

Cody has missed, like 5 games in the last 5 years. Gonna be hard to suddenly find major injury concerns where we can do that.

If the Canes successfully extend Rantanen, could Andrei Svechnikov become available?

He's having his worst season since his rookie year and is signed for 7.75Mx4 after this season. Trade protection doesn't kick in until July 1.

I'd give up anything other than Celebrini or Smith for him.

I'd be more interested in trying to find the next Kovacevic than going long term with Ceci and passing up the opportunity to get a pick back for him while we can.

No. Canes just let Orlov and Andersen walk and that’s 10M extra there even without the cap raise that’s more than enough to resign Rantanen.

Im still hoping he can carve out a similar career to Michal Handzus in his prime. A defensive/reliable bottom 6 center, who can also put up 40ish pts.

I like that comp though I don't really see Bystedt as reaching the offensive heights that Handzus did throughout his career (I recall him at times as more of a 2/3C than a pure 3C, and four 20+ goal seasons does speak to that).

But if you have Bystedt as your 3C and have enough talent on the roster around him, meaning he can have some solid skill on his wings, then that 40 pt. mark might be realistic.

for f***s sake his name is Handguns

…I don’t mind Liljegren as a puck mover on the third pair. Hell, Ferraro-Liljegren would be a great 3rd pairing D pair. Now we just need 4 other defensemen…

I do actually like Walman, despite his recent play. But obviously he and Ceci are playing way above their heads - if they were our 3 and 4 and we had a real top 2, everyone would look SIGNIFICANTLY better but that’s obviously very hard to find.

Ceci would be a solid veteran RD to babysit Dickinson as he transitions to the NHL. I'd be fine with keeping him on a 4-year deal that he wants. Walman-Liljegren and Dickinson-Ceci bottom-4 would be fine next year. Problem is they don't have a top pair...

I think they should shoot for a better couple of RHD’s. I’d sign Fabbro before I’d sign Ceci if it’s there as an example.

I'd move Ceci. I'm just not interested in what he brings to the table; he has solid veteran experience but can't carry a pairing. Maybe if Ferraro is moved, then you keep him just for the veteran presence...but the Sharks really need quality puck-moving ability.

I still think that the Sharks should target Erik Karlsson. He'd have two years left, the Sharks have plenty of cap space, and he could thrive as the focal point on the defense. Something like:

Walman-Karlsson
Ferraro-Liljegren
Mukhamadullin-Thrun

is pretty decent.

Fun fact: Handzus finished tied for 37th in points in 2003-2004, scoring more than any player on our conference finalist San Jose Sharks.

Bystedt doing that in today’s era would have him scoring about 75 points.
