There’s no world where Smith, who did… fine… as a *rookie* centering the *second line* needs to go back to the NHL. He’s got a lot to work on, but he showed he could hang. How he just needs to make adjustments - but so does Celebrini.
I thought Gushchin was actually noticeable in his shifts, backchecked hard etc, but yeah I’m not sure the 4th line is really the place for him. I’d love to see him on Wennberg’s wing, but I think ultimately it’ll take a few injuries for him to get a real chance.

Not that I really care to opine about what other people choose to do with their own bodies, but pasteurization was a really big and important invention.

So Celebrini is injured.
If he's actually out for a plurality of games, for poops and giggles, why not throw Smith to the wolves at 1C and see what he can do with Eklund and Toffoli, move Granlund to 2C and Gushchin up to the 2nd line.
And when it inevitably fails, move Granlund to 1C, demote Gushchin to the AHL, bring up G. Smith and move Kunin to the 2nd line.
We sure could use a healthy Couture right about now.

Haha, a lot of Stanley Cup winners have made a lot of, uh, not great life choices over the years. I don't think simply winning a cup makes one's decision-making infallible.

Love seeing someone else on board with my Will Borgen love fest. Been writing him into the 2025 opening night lineup for months.
I’d go out and sign Borgen and Ekblad this summer to solve the RD issues. Might not have a super high ceiling, but gives us a real NHL top pairing D-Man and a #4 that can help take the next step forward while we continue to build through draft and trades for young players.

Putting aside the whole “winning a Cup does not make one infallible” thing for just a moment, Jakob Chychrun is just about the furthest thing from a Cup winner. The only time he’s ever even made the playoffs was when Arizona was gifted a spot by the excessively generous bubble rules.

Borgen and Fabbro would be my targets in UFA next year. Pair one with Walman on the top pairing, pair the other with Mukhamadullin, profit!
I really go back and forth on whether I would want to try and sign Ekblad. Ultimately I think it would come down to contract length. He's the same age as Borgen but has drastically more miles on his body and isn't exactly the picture of health. He's definitely begun to decline significantly even though he's only 28. But he's also a Stanley Cup winning 6'4" RHD who would fit this team perfectly in the short-term. Realistically I think someone else will sign him (maybe Columbus with all their cap room?), but it's interesting to think about.

IT's amazing to see Fabbro as a targeted player. Just a few years ago he was considered a major project and someone Nashville should abandon. Goes to show you how long defensemen can take to develop.

When I hear hip injury I immediately think of the pointer that took Kyle McLaren out of a big part of at least one season. I'll do my best not to doom spiral from here.

If we were playing for a Stanley Cup, he'd have been playing tonight. I think it's related to whatever happened to him when he got hurt and stopped playing in the preseason and it wasn't fully healed, so they let him play the opener and then are being extra cautious with their franchise player. I don't think there's much to be worried about here.

Just goes to show how terribly poor we are at RHD. While I’d much rather have an Ekblad or Pionk, they’re going to get 6+ years and be bad in the last 3, right when we’re approaching competitive status. With Fabbro or Borgen you can probably get them for 3-4 years. They’re also both quite a bit better than Ceci IMO.
I actually quite like Theodore and it would be fun to see a real good offensive dman to play with Celebrini and Smith, but he’ll cost the most, is mediocre defensively and will be headed down the backside of his career.
If you’re going to overpay for a top 4 Dman on a long term contract, do it when the team is ready. 3-4 years from now when Celebrini, Eklund, Smith, and Askarov are locked in to long term contracts you can go after the big UFA prizes.
I also wouldn’t mind picking up Liljigren this year and Trouba off waivers next summer. Trouba can eat minutes, is way overpaid but he’d only be on the books for a year. Could also see him being worth a 2nd at next years deadline for someone looking to upgrade their third pairing.

Compared to Ferraro, Vlasic, Boroughs, Thrun, Addison, Emberson, and Rutta, it’s gone from AHL caliber to mediocre NHL caliber in two years.
Compared to the rest of our dmen, Walman looks like a legit top 4 guy. It’ll be interesting to see if he can prove to be/grow into a guy you want in the top 4 on a playoff team. If not he’s a nice placeholder.
Sign Ekblad to a truly absurd 3 year contract that expires when Celebrini and Smith need new contracts. Sign him to something like 3 years 42 million and then handshake agreement to resign him 3 years after to a much cheaper 3 year contract or something.

Year 3 would overlap with the first year after their ELCs, it sneaks up quick, it would have to be a 2 year deal to avoid overlap
