Speculation: 2023-24-25 Sharks Roster Discussion

It makes no difference who is available at 7. Someone will be worth the move up to that degree. And for the buyout, so what? He'll have a 2.3 mil cap hit when it's time to pay Celebrini if he turns pro this year but the cap by then will likely eclipse 100 million. I think we can handle it when Burns, Couture, Jones, Karlsson, and Vlasic will all be off the books.

Not necessarily. Seems more likely there isn't much of a difference in the quality of prospect available at 7 vs. 14.

Anyway if we do acquire Korpisalo the correct move is to be ruthless and assign him to the ECHL to force a mutual termination or just deal with the buried cap charge for 4 years. A buyout would be foolish.

The difference between the quality of prospect available at 7 vs. 14 is irrelevant to a deal that's considering 7 for 33 or 42.

The difference between a buyout or a burial is meaningless to whether you do the deal. If you can get #7 for taking on Korpisalo and giving up 33 or 42. You take that deal every day and twice on Sundays. In reality, if this deal was on our table and we accepted it, we would see if we can get a 3rd or 4th for Blackwood and run with Vanecek and Korpisalo and see if he can bounce back or bury one of the goalies before considering a buyout.

The foolish thing would be passing on a top ten pick in this draft because you're worried about some money down the road. The point now is to build the team with as much young talent as we can assemble and this deal would assist in that greatly.

The D I would be intrigued by from
Ottawa (other than Sanderson and Zub who aren’t getting moved) is actually Thomas Chabot. I think he could be a decent buy-low candidate and while he’s definitely overpaid he’s still a pretty good player and 28 years old. $8M for four more years is palatable to me.

7 + Korpisalo + Chabot for 14 + Rutta? I know Sens fans would hate it but I wonder if their management would be interested.

Quality of prospect available may be the same, but the position of quality prospect may not. I'd rather get a real good cornerstone D-man than a real good cornerstone winger.

Considering there's smoke about us taking on Trouba's 8 mil hit from NY, Chabot isn't a bad alternative.

What a weird Goaltending logjam of mediocrity though; Vanacek, Blackwood and Korpisalo. 5 years ago we'd have been the envy of the league.

Listening to podcasts, I'm reminded he comes with baggage (been in NHL/NHLPA assistance program).

I don't know the Sharks have a strong enough lockerroom leadership and culture to support him. Especially with Couture dealing with chronic injury (so he can't be counted on to be around to help lead).

(If the Sharks are one of the teams his MNTC allows)



Also rumored that VGK is interested in Marner.

I’ve looked at a Korpisalo trade so many times. Here’s the potential pick packages that seem to be “fair” value according to puckpedia’s cap relief values (in all scenarios I’m giving Ottawa a little surplus value, because actual fair value is so painful I think it’d be a tough sell to their fan base). Also I’m assuming Korpisalo is being valued as replacement level; or rather, bringing no value as a player.

Trade back x2
Korpisalo + 7 + 25 for 14 + 42
Ottawa gets surplus value of a mid 2nd

Keep #7
Korpisalo + 25 + 39 for future considerations
Ottawa gets surplus value of a mid 2nd

Tradeback to 14 + retention
Korpisalo 25% retained + 7 for 14
Ottawa gets surplus value of a mid 2nd
Presumably the Sharks would buyout Korpisalo. While this would leave some cap load on Ottawa, it would be greatly reduced:
$83k, $208k, $460k, $584k, $333k x 4yrs
All values would be triple for Sharks cap

And no, the Sens don’t need Ferraro (please don’t read into this as a slight on Mario) because they already have Sanderson, Chabot and Chychrun on the left side.

Minus the last part, that's Halttunen. Only Laine has shown he can produce at the NHL level IF/WHEN he is engaged.
 
Laine's value is at an all time low and who knows if he will rebound. A worth taking a flyer on if cheap, but not necessarily for the Sharks.

Halttunen is still cooking and I don't think he will be as effective at the top level like Laine has been in the past. He's the Great Value brand Laine.

As long as the 1sts are off the table, I wouldn't mind getting Celly some talent to play with. He isn't a long commitment if he doesn't work out and will help get the Sharks closer to the floor.

Would rather take on Korpisalo and Pageau for assets than give up any assets for a one dimensional player coming out of the player assistance program.

I’d say chances of him returning are pretty low but I could see another team not just Nashville being interested. It would likely be a similar trade to the Kniazev for Gawanke though.
