Think there is a time and place for those smaller guys, but they have to be more in the mold of Eklund where they are tough on the puck and play bigger than their measurables to workout. I think we see one of Gushchin or Bordeleau moved out this summer as part of a deal to bring in a young player that fits the Grier mold better.

Prefer it to be a D-Man given how bad that group is and also because I think there could soon be a logjam in the forward group assuming we want to insulate the youngsters with some veteran presence (could have Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, and one of Bordeleau/Gushchin comprising almost half of the top 9 next year if lottery luck plays out). Given all of those guys are on the sub 6'0 side of the equation, doesn't leave a lot of spots to add the size and speed that Grier covets if they're all taking up top 9 roles.

I think ideally it's just Eklund, Smith, and Celebrini that you make the exceptions for as they're the most talented of the bunch. From there, I think you see if you can grab a D-prospect of similar value in a positional swap for a Bordeleau/Gushchin from a team needing more forward prospects.

You’re probably right. I’m a big fan of Guschin, so I really hope he comes in and thrives. I wonder what Bordeleau fetches in a trade right now. I’m not sure either have a TON of value unless they go crazy these last games and raise their stock.

I'm no expert on AHL trade values, but I'm guessing they'll be Jack Thompson-level returns... a promising AHLer but hasn't shown to be ready to be an impact player or even a depth player in the NHL. Obviously different positions but same vibe.

Don't know that either fetch a ton on their own, but attach them to another asset and you might be able to do something significant. I'd expect that there is something done to add this offseason. We have 7 picks in the first 2 rounds over the next 2 drafts after basically having 4 picks in the first 36 picks last year (Smith, Musty, Edstrom, and Halttunen). Add in the 2022 haul as well with Bystedt, Lund, and Havelid and that comes out to be 18 picks in the first 2 rounds over a 4 year stretch.

That's all fine and dandy, but I think there is a good opportunity to start utilizing some of that draft capital to add young players already in the league rather than use all of the picks on draftees. We have an immense amount of salary cap space for next year and need to get more guys in the mold of what Grier wants (size/speed) while also needing to insulate the youngsters with vets. Seems like a perfect time to add a player or two for maybe a bit of a discount (think 2nd + Bordeleau/Gushchin) because their cap number may be a little high for their current team.

Grier said something to that effect in his presser Friday when talking about how this deal offers them assets and flexibility to get involved in some moves/deals that they otherwise might not be able to.

I had the same thought hearing him talk - he definitely had his eyes on either some FAs or some trades for younger guys in yeah, the mold of what he’s looking for. I agree that he’s not going to be building exclusively through the draft.

In a year or two, it might be a good time to go hunting for cap constrained RFAs. Maybe someone like K'andre Miller or Evan Bouchard might force their way out. Or Shane Pinto this coming offseason.

Is it just me, or has Burroughs looked surprisingly decent these past couple of games? Solid defensive play and uncharacteristicly nice breakout passes to go along with his usual physicality.

I know it’s been discussed as nauseum but man I thought we’d come out of this deadline with like a couple picks and some aging 4th liner.

Instead, we have an unprotected 1st next year, a legit 1st round prospect from last year in Edstrom, a pretty solid prospect in Thompson and a fairly young NHLer who may still find his form (for SIMEK).

I love Hertl and it was a shock but man, Grier had an absolutely insane deadline. He also had a fantastic deadline last year and a pretty significant summer with a great draft and the Karlsson trade.

As a few people have said, he’s been an absolute machine in tearing the team down and getting us set up for the future — now I just hope he’s as good at building it back up, developing prospects, etc.

Still, I’m impressed.

And Vanecek. I think the only one to really discuss is if there was more value to be had for Hertl...and maybe Okhotiuk but I have no issues with that one.

The bold is the important part. None of it means anything if the players don't pan out.

Don't see the harm on offering a 1 year "prove it" deal. He did great in KHL the last 2 seasons and still only 24.
I don't see the harm if everyone is on board with it but a guy that bailed for Russia because of the opportunities he got here under previous management is going to be hard-pressed to believe the new guy that has done just about everything possible to get rid of every player and prospect from the previous management is going to get a true crack at it. I think a trade is probably best for all involved. It gives Sasha the chance to make it to the NHL w/o any perceived prejudice and the team gets to move on and address their many issues with others. I think there's a decent chance that a significant amount of rookies play here next season and Grier probably should look to fill vacant spots with established veterans where possible.

Mark Giordano and Mats Zuccarello both ditched for the KHL when they were in their early 20s and ended up sticking around with their teams for awhile. It could happen.

Rather combine him with another asset and trade him. Someone is going to see him as a cheap depth piece and the return in that will be better than icing him on a bad team next year.

Looking at a little CapFriendly fun, we're going to have to make some high dollarish signings or trades to reach the cap floor next year. Even with Couture, Vlasic, and Ferraro all on the roster and signing Kunin to a $3.2M deal, we're going to come in around $5M short of the cap floor with 13F, 8D, and 2G.

I'd look to move Chmelevski with Ferraro in a deal to someone that needs help at D and a cheap depth forward while taking on a cap casualty in the process to increase the compensation coming back to SJ.

Yeah, absolutely. But our situation was a nightmare a couple of years ago - the fact that we’re slowly becoming flush with prospects and picks while freeing up our cap space is a real miracle move.

I remember one of the guys they brought in was a cap specialist — they really had a firm plan and stuck with it aggressively. I dig it.

Now yeah, need these guys to pan out.

KHL contract expires 5/1 which is why he can't play for Sharks this season.

I think the Sharks may be able to get more bang for the $$ by trading rather than signing him to deal. He'd probably demand 1-way deal.

I know he’s doing well in the KHL, but does it translate? Has anyone watched him play? Has he gotten better or is this just a fringe NHLer playing in a worse league?

Personally, I feel like his value is as low as it can be. Rather just give him a chance at a middle-6 role instead of bringing in some other buy-low candidate in free agency. He's still only 24.
