From Daily Faceoff, scouting prospects traded at the deadline, for the Sharks:

David Edstrom, C, 18 (San Jose Sharks)

Traded: Vegas acquired Tomas Hertl, 2025 and 2027 third round picks from San Jose for David Edstrom and 2025 first-round pick

The Tomas Hertl trade was insane, but Edstrom instantly becomes one of San Jose’s best prospects. He was Vegas’ top name, with many scouts considering him a steal in the first round last year. Edstrom is known for being an excellent skater with good hockey IQ. At 6-foot-3, he has great size for a power forward, and he’s a good dual-threat as a shooter and a passer. Even if he’s a third-line center behind Will Smith and William Eklund, I love it.

JACK THOMPSON
Trade: San Jose acquired Jack Thompson and a 2024 third-round pick for Anthony Duclair and 2025 seventh-round pick

I really like Thompson. He’s an excellent puck-mover on pace for 45 points as a second-year AHLer and even has an NHL game to his credit. Thompson was always a solid point producer in the OHL, but he’s also aggressive and can eat minutes. He fits the mold of a modern-day blueliner who can do a little bit of everything, and instantly makes San Jose’s defensive depth better. I feel confident in him at least being an impactful third-pairing defenseman whom you can use on the power play.

…I like it.

But with two new prospects, one who was a 1st last year, and an unprotected first next year. I absolutely did NOT expect that haul two days ago.

3rds, especially that far in the future, are meaningless.
well, i wouldn't say 3rds are meaningless, otherwise they wouldn't have been a dealbreaker for Vegas either

i think they're like the the 9th through 16th gig of ram in a base model macbook...

do you absolultely NEED them? no
would it be NICE to have them? yep
for anyone that really wants them but doesn't have them, can they go get them at any time they want? yes
is the only reason you don't have them because someone else thinks it's more important that you feel the pain of not having it than they need the utility of keeping it? 100%

“Hertl said one of the first things he noticed when meeting his new Vegas teammates was how big the team is.“I’m used to being the tallest guy, but it seems everyone here is as tall or taller.”He said he thinks having a big, strong team is a big reason for success”

I found this interesting and spot on with the approach MG is taking to team building. Over the past almost 2 years since Grier has taken over, our prospect pool is bigger and stronger. Guys like Bords, Guschin, Eklund will be the exceptions.

It sort of amuses me that Grier has a seeming real distaste for everything DW did in the last years. Grier came in and was like… I must destroy it all.

The thing about 3rd round picks with the Sharks is just weird. There is a lot of other teams that know how to get value at that round, but Sharks seems to always be the one team that has no idea what to draft there. Maybe focus on all around BPA at that round, even without fully scouting the player?
Also Sharks 3rd pick is around 65-67 area, so seems like an area that you could still find potential even if it's not going to be a gamechanger.

But more important than drafting is getting a new staff in Barracuda.
AHL team needs becomes a good place for our young players that have to go through there.

I just mean we can recoup those, it wasn’t ideal but it was the cost of Hertl’s huge contract and a fairly touted prospect + 1st is very worth it to me.

Doug probably sneered at him when they crossed paths and said something like, “Good luck, Anson”

I sometimes wonder what Doug thinks about the Sharks from afar. Is he like, oh man I really f***ed them up, or is he like YOU CAN STILL MAKE A RUN YOU FOOLS

Im sure he's thinking "I'm 0-2 on trying to win with Erik Karlsson, my teams stinks, and now I have to trade him. I hope I don't get sick"

Don't forget that when Grier left the Sharks, he had polite-but-strong words for the bad culture in the locker room.

After the lengthy “we’re not rebuilding” glad to see we’re finally moving forward. GMMG has effectively burned it to the ground. I’m just hoping he does right in building back. The next “n” years are going to be trying but interesting.

In GMMG we trust…as if we have any choice…

Think there is a time and place for those smaller guys, but they have to be more in the mold of Eklund where they are tough on the puck and play bigger than their measurables to workout. I think we see one of Gushchin or Bordeleau moved out this summer as part of a deal to bring in a young player that fits the Grier mold better.

Prefer it to be a D-Man given how bad that group is and also because I think there could soon be a logjam in the forward group assuming we want to insulate the youngsters with some veteran presence (could have Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, and one of Bordeleau/Gushchin comprising almost half of the top 9 next year if lottery luck plays out). Given all of those guys are on the sub 6'0 side of the equation, doesn't leave a lot of spots to add the size and speed that Grier covets if they're all taking up top 9 roles.

I think ideally it's just Eklund, Smith, and Celebrini that you make the exceptions for as they're the most talented of the bunch. From there, I think you see if you can grab a D-prospect of similar value in a positional swap for a Bordeleau/Gushchin from a team needing more forward prospects.

Expiring contracts:

Goalies: RFA: Mäkiniemi*. UFA: Cooley. (AHL) UFA Warm.

Defense: Free (RFA 1): Thrun. RFA: Addison*, Emberson*. UFA: MacDonald. (AHL) UFA Frisch, Kinal.

Forwards: Free (RFA 1): Bordeleau. RFA: Coe, Kunin*, Peterson*, Studnicka*, Zadina*. UFA: Bailey, Barabanov, Carpenter, Hoffman, Labanc, Lindblom. (AHL) UFA Bellerive, Cassels, Kaspick, MacEachern, Marek, Vincent.

Continuing contracts:
Goalies: Blackwood, Chrona, Romanov, Vanecek
Defense: Benning, Burroughs, Ferraro, Furlong, Guryev, Knyzhov, Laroque, Mukhamadullin, Pulli, Rutta, Thompson, Vlasic
Forwards: Bystedt, Cardwell, Couture, Edstrom, Eklund, Granlund, Gushchin, Halttunen, Kostin, Musty, Robins, Russell, Sabourin, G Smith, Sturm, Todd, Weisblatt, Zetterlund

"RFA 1" - players cannot be signed to offer sheets, no arbitration rights

Let’s remember that Celebrini is still only 17 and Smith is 18. Entirely possible they are not finished growing yet.
