I’m 40, so maybe not?!

But yeah, thanks! I’m a filmmaker and things are constantly going wrong in a film set, it’s nonstop chaos, and what I quickly learned was that when they did go wrong, I could fret about it and complain and spiral — which would just waste more time and honestly provide nothing, or I could just go okay, how do we fix it and move on?

It was honestly the best life lesson I ever learned and it changed my approach to… everything.
Same with my job in live sound/recording - not enough time to not be able to think too hard about it

I think we should just copy what Chicago is doing and overpay veteran depth players for leadership. Offer Kyle Okposo 5 million on a 1 year deal or something. There's also the Goodrow option.
Yes, go after Goodrow, sign someone like Toffoli and flip him at the deadline.

Maybe offer some prospects to Columbus and take Jiricek, Merzlikins, and Gudbrandson off their hands.

There's no way we can expect to quickly build even a mediocre team through free agency - that's just too expensive.

Playoffs in 2030 remains my expectation.

I think it’s all the luck of the draw, right? If we get Celebrini and a defensive prospect with the Penguins pick, if Smith and Musty come in and play well… and if we can convince some actual good FAs to sign here by overpaying, I think we can get into the playoffs faster than we think. But it’ll take a bunch of draft luck.

Definitely true. I think the earliest (with draft luck) is the 2026-27 season to be fighting for a playoff spot. But the likely outcome as Cas says is that we're not a real playoff team, and certainly not a contender, until 2030.

I'm with you on the forwards but I just don't see the point of signing Pesce to a long term contract right after getting rid of Hertl's. Not to mention he (and any other UFA with options) would likely have no interest in signing with the Sharks.
I thought you were beating the Hanafin ufa drum pretty hard though

Totally. I do think Grier is really trying for sooner rather than later. I think he’s torn off all the band-aids now, and I suspect this summer he’s going to try to add a few pieces toward the future and not as many stopgaps.

Hasso is a real fan, I think he’s taking all of this hard too, so my guess is Grier is going to try and field a more competitive team next year — though again, it depends on if we get Celebrini, on if Musty and Smith can make it, on if FAs are willing to sign here…

I definitely don’t think we’re competing for a cup for a few years, yeah.

One of my buddies asked about Grier’s ins and outs. I did the trade ins and outs but really it boils down to

Out: Hertl, Timo, Karlsson, Burns and a few thirds
In: 3 firsts, 3 seconds (includes that trade down year 1), Shakir, Thrun, Edstrom, Zetterlund, Granlund, Thompson, Blackwood, Addison, about 6M in dead cap

Obviously a bunch of depth stuff but tried to mostly only include guys that I could see playing at the NHL level for us for a bit. All in all not too bad. I mean it obviously sucks to see what we are having to ice right now but still overall he’s done a pretty okay job.

That was before we traded Hertl. Now it's clear we're going 100% scorched earth.
We're going to be really bad for a while. Hopefully the ping pong balls are ever in our favor.

At worst, it sets up the next GM to build a team, albeit without the help of an expansion draft of players.

There’s no way Granlund and Eklund are going to shoulder the top two lines all year next year right? Are there any centers available in UFA that are good stopgaps/vet guys and may possibly sign here?

The hardest thing about this rebuild is that we had trouble signing FAs when we were good… now…

Bring Lil Joe home!

Celebrini is not going to speed up the rebuild. Connor McDavid would not speed up the rebuild. We are too far away.

Celebrini might be ready next year, but won't be an impact player for at least a year - everyone else in the draft is at least a year away minimum. Smith is probably a year away and might be two years away from being an impact player. Mukhamadullin and Musty probably need two years to be impact players and neither is likely to be a true top talent. Everyone else in the system is a year away or more, save maybe guys like Bordeleau and Gushchin who could be full-time NHLers next season, but will likely never be impact players. This is largely the best case scenario.

Everything would have to go right with our best prospects just to be ready and able to compete for the playoffs in 2026. Everything will not go right. Someone will get hurt, someone will just bust, we'll miss out somewhere, etc.

I would kill for that. What Hertl meant to you, Pavelski means to me. I saw his first game as a Shark (Hertl’s too but still), I watched him grow into a star, he was, to me, sometimes more than Joe and Marleau, the real heart of the Sharks. There’s no way he’s coming back but man, that would be cool.

Don’t know if it’ll equal wins in the immediate but Celebrini and Smith will certainly make this team funner to watch. Having Eklund, Smith and Celebrini would be so damn tight..

Yeah, I don’t think we’re competing for the cup any time soon but watching those guys, Musty, Muhk, Havelid, Bystedt, Edstrom, etc. hopefully break into the league in the near future will be really, really fun.

I think maybe that’s why I’m a little less upset about the Hertl trade. The last couple of years felt like we’ve been dragging the rotting corpse of our past greatness around with us while simultaneously being awful. I don’t mind being bad if it means watching a bunch of new guys make their way into the league and start seeing the beginnings of something new. That’s exciting.

I found this interesting in Grier’s interview and it goes with what I figured he was going to do:

“I think next year is a plan from my point of view, and Hasso’s point of view is to take a step forward. Whether we got to add some veterans and things that kind of supplement the young players, but we’ll have some young players that will be bringing some excitement and hopefully some energy into the franchise and into the building.

Hopefully this summer is a good summer–and hopefully, we get a little luck with the lottery. Hopefully next year, we’re in a season where we can kind of take a step forward, after two years of kind of peeling it back a little bit.”

So aside from hoping for Celebrini, it sounds like he may actively try to be involved in FA and trades that might make sense. I think this year was rock bottom, now we get to see if Grier is as good at building a team as he is tearing one apart.
