Speculation: 2023-24-25-26 Sharks Roster Discussion

  • Xenforo Cloud is upgrading us to version 2.3.11 on Monday July 20, 2026 at 12:00 AM PST. Expect a temporary downtime during this process. More info here
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
He's definitely more ready than Eklund which is why Ek needed like a year and a half to get used to it. Sten should start in the AHL for a month or so unless he absolutely beats the pants off anyone else he's competing against. As it stands right now there's a lot of development needed in the top 6, as in basically everyone pencilled in. There's like a combined 5 seasons worth of experience in the six spots combined which is nuts.

I also think anyone expecting a mack-level impact is asking for a LOT.

It’s definitely asking a lot, I just think he’s that good. We’ll see though.

I do see Grier wanting to add a big top 6 guy to play with Misa/Sten (or that 2nd line in general) but I think he’d only do it if he could add like a Knies-level guy. Otherwise, it’s Graf/Toffoli on line 2/3 and Musty/Bystedt/Lund have a chance to take that spot if they come into camp gangbusters.

I think if Stenberg is regularly getting time on one of the top 2 lines and scores somewhere in the 50-60 pt range, people should be very happy. That's in line with the Sennecke/Demidov/Snuggerud level of rookie season. If he scores more than that, people should be elated.

He will have more support than Celebrini had.
I am basically hoping for somewhere around a half PPG from him. That represents a step up from his NHLe total of ~33 I think in the SHL last year. Now if he plays with Celebrini/Smith, that expectation goes way up, but I suspect he will be with Wennberg probably as a veteran presence which will curb his scoring output a decent bit.

Long-term, makes sense with Misa, but don't want to have Misa continuing to learn while also bringing another rookie along for the ride with him. Makes sense to pair centers up Mack/Smith, Berg Line, and Misa/Toffoli Roommates.

The fact MG didn’t get a 1st or 2nd outta him is kinda annoying but oh well the Sharks own the rights to every fun prospect anyways

I think if there’s one thing Grier has shown it’s that there’s a price for most of his players and no one ever met that price with Mario. I’m sure he got some sub par offers during the trade line but ultimately decided they weren’t worth messing up the team vibe for a low 2nd or something.

Eklund didn't need a year and a half to get used to it. Eklund was kept away from it because the teams were garbage and he could develop elsewhere without burning his ELC. If Stenberg stepped into the 2021-22 Sharks team instead of Eklund, they probably would've sent him back to the SHL too. If Eklund at 18 stepped into this year's team, he's probably an NHL'er too.

I’m just pick happy that’s all haha

yeah I was shocked that Ferraro wasn't dealt at last year's TDL but i take GMMG at his word that he basically threw the locker room a bone to not trade him and let them go for it

also i think he was definitely lowballed like nothing near a 1st got offered which made the decision easier... basically trading a 3rd round pick for a couple months of vibez which i think in the long run was a meaninful experience for those kids

Wanted a 1st and not getting worked down by time/leverage for that 2nd rounder that we didn't really need will probably go further for his GM reputation than the draft pick would have.

If other GMs know they can always just wait you out, you're doomed so I get why he held to his price tag even if I don't think Ferraro is good and is probably going to get the worst contract handed out tomorrow.

I think Grier, like DW, subscribes to the "assets to fill space" ideology, where he doesn't like to acquire a bunch of picks to draft players that the organization won't have room to play.

I sub to the we have an extra 2nd to move up 8 spots in the draft camp. Or here’s an extra 2nd for a Sherwood type trade. Either way I’m fine with itttt I guess

Or, more logically, he valued Ferraro's contributions to a playoff push combined with holding his exclusive UFA negotiating rights more than a late 2nd.

It's strange to see all this reporting about players going to teams...I thought that teams and players were not allowed to talk until July 1.

Yeah, it's been said for some time that Raddysh and Bob were definitely going to Toronto. Thought it was Leaf's are the center of the universe perspective, but feels like tampering.
