Same, I was really hoping he’d make it to FA. He’s still very good defensively, and a C-core of MacK-RyJo-Staal would’ve been hard to play against

He’d be great. I’d be fine with them spending their small bit of cap space just filling the roster with depth guys that bring some one dimensional elements as well (like defensive specialist, breakaway guy, shooter, etc)

Jordan Staal is an elite 3C. The regression will happen no doubt, but the next 2 years with MacKinnon/Johansen/Staal would be phenomenal centre depth provided Johansen plays at a low end 2C level.

Backlund makes a ton of sense now as a 3C who can platoon with RyJo if need be. Wasn't there rumours that Avs had interest in him at the deadline from a guy on Calgary Puck with some inside info?
