In all fairness, guys like myself are probably a little too tough on Mackinnon. He’s matured a lot over the last few years. But it certainly helps having guys like Landy and Cogliano around him. I expect Cogliano is back.

I wanted us to sign him for something just above league minimum, he's a #6 at this point of his career. But some team is going to give him 3 years at 3 no doubt. Veteran, cup winning big defensman, a team like Anaheim would love him and that probably is where he's headed no?

I would agree that would be his market value, but UFA is crazy and players usually get more than what they're worth.
Also, teams at different stages of their process, don't value players the same. EJ at like 3x3 for a team like Anaheim is just fine. It's not fine for any team looking to make the playoffs.

Sucks if that's how it ends. Was hoping he'd stick around another year on a cheaper deal ($<1.5M) and retire an Av.
He needs to cover his horse racing hobby somehow...

That’s definitely a move that 2010’s Avs would make.

Hate that he won’t retire an Av though.

Unfortunately the writing was always on the wall for EJ:

Makar
Toews
Byram
Girard
Manson

Are all surefire in the Top-6 next season.

After that you have:

Hunt
MacDermid (EWWWW)
Malinksi (interesting)

Who are all potential options for the 6/7 spots.

Add to that, they could very likely just re-sign JMFJ at the league minimum to fill it out.

EJ is the odd-man out

For me you can’t be tying up 2M plus in EJ so I’m fine moving on. I just hope they replace him or even better (I’m looking at you Andrew Peeke) upgrade him. Otherwise, it’s just another impact piece of that winning championship team that is gone an not relaxed just like Landy, Kadri and Burakovsky.

The Avs should just one-stop-shop at CBJ and pick up Roslovic and Peeke. CMac can get his work done early and then go golf and relax the rest of the summer

Yeah EJ should only be brought back for $1M or less and he can almost certainly get a $2M deal on the open market. Good for the Avs to move on...

Another one @chet1926 was certain would be back :sarcasm:

I dunno if the Flames are a team that would take on a small Dman, but with how many players they've had the last few years that refuse to re-sign with them, you gotta believe a guy like Girard who's signed for 4 more years at a very friendly cap hit would be tempting for them.

Especially with Hanifin gone.
