Literally happened at the last deadline. They even got the Caps to retain on Eller.

Avs entered the playoffs with like 4M in cap space.

I think the difference here is that they can add for free. It costs no assets.

The last two years they’ve added a player later in the off-season (Erod/Murray). I doubt it’s any different this year.

Those last four names made me barf. If it's their plan we are f***ed.

Well to be fair, if they go that route they're just depth roles, and just to start the season. They would probably make subsequent moves a month or so into the season to replace them if they're not working. Or not if they are.

They've done well with this approach in the past, seeing how depth players look to start the year instead of getting locked into questionable deals in the off season, and then upgrading depth with waivers and trades during the season if they need to. Usually early on in October and November.

Seems like a strategy of theirs and it's worked ok so far. They know there will inevitably be a team or two that's in a tough spot with a player they don't necessarily want to lose, but have to because of the cap, or a numbers game when they had to replace an injured player to start the season, and then had to make a roster decision when that player came back.

The Avs just lie in wait most seasons hoping to exploit this, to help get them through the regular season. Then they reassess again at the deadline whether they need to make more moves for those roles in the playoffs.

Nov 2015-16 - Claimed Chris Wagner off waivers who provided a decent 4C role IMO
Jan 2016-17 - Claimed Matt Nieto who was good in a depth role
Mar 2016-17 - Traded Andreas Martinsen for some scoring depth in Sven Andrighetto
Oct 2017-18 - Claimed Patrik Nemeth who was decent in a depth role at first
Feb 2017-18 - Traded Chris Bigras for Ryan Graves who was decent in a depth role
Nov 2021-22 - Claimed Nicolas Aube-Kubel who was decent in a depth role
Oct 2022-23 - Claimed Dryden Hunt who they used in another trade
Dec 2022-23 - Traded Dryden Hunt for scoring depth with Dennis Malgin

Olausson, I was a little surprised to hear him mentioned, because he kind of had a so so year last season. Meyers probably is what he is for the most part, but he can be decent in a 4th line role if he plays like he's capable of. Then they can bring in another 4C at the deadline if they need to.

But I'm cautiously optimistic on Malinski.

I think Malinski could fit in well on this team and I think the team likes his chances. That's why they signed him, and probably why they didn't even offer EJ a cheap one year deal. So they can leave that spot open for him to earn out of camp, and then make subsequent moves like they usually do if he doesn't work out.

Not sure if he’s been mentioned yet but I think Tomas Nosek could make a solid 4C us. Prefer him to Meyers. There’d still be a hole at 3RW but that’s something that can be filled during year or at deadline. Would also prefer someone pushes Jack Johnson out of lineup cause he’s currently their #6 at the moment. Here’s hoping Malinski is ready.

Edit: Just remembered that Kovalenko could possibly take that 3RW spot depending on when his year ends.
Sorry if i'm late to the party , what are the chances to have him on our roster or at least in the AHL in a near future ? This year ? next year ? ...

I am still hoping for a Girard trade for top 6 help. I like Drouin and Johansen as adds but feel like they need to hedge those bets. I think it should be a C to push RyJo to wing or a RW. I love that they have more of a plan for the 3rd line too. They need a little more size to balance out the D, i like Cal Foote to rotate with Malinski and Johnson on the bottom pair. I dont mind the idea of an open tryout for 3RW and 4C. Should have Cogs be 13th forward to keep him fresh, bring in when needed.

Drouin/MacK/Rants
Nuke/RyJo/xxxxx
Lehky/Colton/xxxxx
Wood/xxxxx/LOC
Cogs

Toews/Makar
Byram/Manson
Johnson/Foote
Malinski

Georgie/Frankie

Wish list for top 6:
Lindholm
Backlund
Reinhart
Jenner
Henrique
Scheifele
Hertl
Bergeron
Kadri
Konecny
Kane
Tarasenko

Any of those would solidify our top six and hedge against injury and ineffectiveness.

I dont mind giving Foudy or Olausson a try out at 3RW maybe bring in Patrick/Zadina as a PTO to compete with those guys for the spot, Patrick and Foudy could also compete for 4C with Meyers and Pavel. If our top six is strong enough we would only need small adds at deadline and not try to fill a gaping hole.

Going into the season without adding another forward should be a non-option. Assuming no prospects crack the opening night roster, we are looking at LOC on the 3rd line. After one injury, we’re looking at Cogs and LOC on the 3rd line and we’d be right back to where we were last year against Seattle.

A good 3rd liner must be added. They have the cap space, no excuses.

Exactly. We can't go into a season with this roster.

If the Avs want ~5 years with Colton, they are looking at over 4m. If that is what CMac meant by term, then we should really figure the Avs have roughly 2.5m left to fill the roster +/- 250k. If they settle for 2-3 years with Colton, they probably get him in the mid to high 3s. So 3.25m +/- 250k. When you're looking at 2 spots to fill, that changes the math fairly significantly. If you're around 2.25, you're basically scraping for 2 1m sorts of guys. But at 3.5m, you can get one ~2.5m sort of guy who realistically is at a much higher level of play. So in the interview where CMac was talking about the cap and the Colton contract... I think that is the real math of the situation. Adding to that, if there is the term, a trade might have to be in play to work on getting a better player instead of a couple 1m guys.

I know of one player that the Avs have made clear they're willing to do a PTO, but he's a guy who expects to get signed to a 1-way deal over the next couple of months.

Considering that, I'm sure there are other players the Avs have done the same with. Feelers out on PTO deals, probably letting guys know they might offer them a 1-way deal, might not... that kind of thing.

So, for those who don't think we are scraping the bottom of the barrel, we most certainly are. There's no $2m player coming in, IMO. Not without a trade of some salary leaving. Once the Avs sign Colton, it'll be a couple of league-minimum type deals and then bank the cap space until TDL.

EJ said in an interview on Altitude yesterday that he blocked a couple of trades in 2021 with his NMC.

I don’t know if Joe (Sakic) will appreciate this, I had a couple teams where I could have been traded to, but they were on my no-trade list, and I said ‘No, I’m not going there.’

Since they’re already in to LTIR, they can’t bank cap space
