I get what you're saying, but if that's the case then you don't make that trade if you're the Flyers. That doesn't do ANYTHING for you. Bruins are desperate for cap. Nashville is looking to re-tool, not rebuild. Flyers, what do they get out of this? You should not be that desperate to get rid of Hayes in their position.
Briere is cleaning house. That's what it does for the Flyers. Get rid of players he no longer wants.

Unless Hayes was a total cancer, that's not how you make players go away. They should not be in a hurry to trade him for any price, unlike Bruins were with Hall.

LeBrun says that Seattle is in on Erik Karlsson.

Interesting, I didn't think about that one. They have cap space and a need for a star.

Hayes was a major problem last year and in Torts doghouse for most of the season. It's clear that they couldn't wait to move him.

They cleared 3.5M off their books for the next t 3 years. That’s valuable. Hayes also appears to be the exact type of person Philly is trying to get away from. I know he’s loved by his teammates and all but Philly has been through enough of those fun loving characters with no compete.

Yeah, me neither. One of the few teams that could actually take on his entire salary, so probably wouldn't have to pay that much to SJ either.

That's valuable when you're building a contending team. Not when you are about to bottom out and tank for multiple years. I mean, flexibility is not bad in that case either, but not while wasting a retaining slot IMO. And I still think had they gone into season and hoped for a bounce back, they could've gotten more.

All in all, for me it just looks like an absolutely unnecessary trade by Briere.

It would be a good fit for him too. Probably one of the only teams that could insulate him and allow him to play his game.

Since they’re a recent expansion team, I’m pretty sure that they’d like to add a big name after just making the playoffs to help draw more interest and fans.

Would EK waive to go to Seattle? I wouldn't exactly put them in the cup contender category for a while.

Do you think there is another contender out there after him? One with
A) the cap space to absorb more than 80% of that deal to keep the asset cost down?
or
B) the assets required to make SJ retain 5,75 for 4 more years?

I thought the Hall and RyJo deals proved how hard moving salary is. Nothing surprising about Hayes returning nothing either.
True. But I think the RyJo deal kind of set the standard.

I dont think before that deal happens, that all of these guys were worth nothing. Especially not with the 50% retention deals.

But I think once RyJo goes for nothing, it pretty much forces the Hayes deal into being a pure cap dump.

A month ago I would have been thrilled to have gotten Hayes at 50% retention for a 1st round pick. It's fantastic value for St. Louis honestly. To get a middle 6 forward for free on a very affordable $3.5M cap.

I hope Johansen provides the same value for us but I'm slightly more concerned about his impact given 3 of his last 4 years have been really bad. But I do think our Johansen deal has way more potential upside then the Hayes one.

Key pieces? They gonna add more? Winnipeg might make out like bandits

There's more going with PLD as well though. Harkins is at least one piece.

I think we'll have to wait and see the full picture but I would say getting both Vilardi and Iafollo is pretty decent work. Vilardi statistically had almost as big of an impact for LA as PLD for Winnipeg last year.

If they can make him work as a Center it could be a big win for them.

I love johansen's upside but Hayes is way healthier.

In the last three seasons, Hayes has played in 184 games and Johansen has played in 182.

I definitely wouldn’t say Hayes is way healthier; they’re about the same in that department. Hayes is also a little older.

Ah yes, RyJo a whole 12 weeks younger :sarcasm:

I'd still prefer RyJo .. 1 less year on the contract, and way better at face-offs, and a right hand shot
