I'm kinda baffled how cheap that was for Blues. Surely Hayes at 50% is worth more than that? Why would Briere do that?

Blues got a good middle 6 player for nothing and on a cheap contract. Combine that with Vrana, they have done some great bargain shopping.

Teams are also apparently trying to shed salary anyway they can. Wonder if the post pandemic finances are causing a crunch…

Would have been a sweet heist to pick up both RyJo and Hayes at 50%. I guess retention isn't what it used to be

Probably cheaper than buying him out. Same reason we got RyJo for the price we did
But why would they trade him at this cost anyway? It's not like they are under pressure to create capspace. They should either wait for Hayes to turn it around and get a bit more value back, or then he sucks so bad it helps your team to tank.

I would have preferred Hayes over Johanson. Too bad that trade was all tied up when we pulled the trigger.
Really? I think you're underrating RyJo's potential. At the top of their games he's a much better player than Hayes. Plus hayes is signed for an extra year and is a year older

"Bottom 9 role"

He had the 3rd highest minutes of all Leafs forwards. Only Marner and Matthews played more.

And almost all of his points came in round 1 against Tampa which was a very high scoring series.

He isn't good anymore and he's over 30. He isn't going to get better.
He's a hell of a lot better than Newhook or Meyers at playing center and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

The reason he was given the minutes is because he was reliable and they trusted him.

Hayes at $3.5m is a nice pickup.

He’s going to get you 40ish points and bottom line is he’s 8 feet 17 inches tall and that makes a difference out there.
Those will be an empty 40ish points though. He’s slow, soft, and not good defensively. He’s also not very good on faceoffs, is a left shot, and is a little older than Johansen.

If Johansen recovers well after his latest injury, he’s a much better fit for the Avs! I know it’s minor, but the Avs also didn’t have to give up a pick like the Blues did.

Yeah give me Johansen at 4M over Hayes at 3.5 every day of the week. I’m happy with Cmac’s work here. He got ahead of things but also kinda set the market on these players with term and salary.

I thought the Hall and RyJo deals proved how hard moving salary is. Nothing surprising about Hayes returning nothing either.
I get what you're saying, but if that's the case then you don't make that trade if you're the Flyers. That doesn't do ANYTHING for you. Bruins are desperate for cap. Nashville is looking to re-tool, not rebuild. Flyers, what do they get out of this? You should not be that desperate to get rid of Hayes in their position.

Now we need to find an unwanted overpaid top 6 winger that we can get at 50% for nothing

Canucks could send us Garland at 50%

Would’ve been nice to get Hayes too but Johansen being a right handed Centre that’s good on draws is a better fit for this team.
