Duchene on a one year cup chasing deal to cash out next year when the cap rises and after a cup win. The redemption story is going to be an absolute classic!

A lot of things being said about Duchene can be similarly said about Eichel and we know how that story played out.

I mean I remember distinctly only one player scoring on us during our series with Nashville a couple years back...

I wonder who that was.

That Duchene news is pretty shocking right? He was a good player there and only had 3 years left. For two of those years the buyout doesn’t really even save them any money.

Hate it for him too. It always seemed like Nashville was where he wanted to be and that it was a good fit.

Avs do need scoring and Duchene would certainly help with that. He'd add a legit top 6 winger to the group. Where it falls apart is everywhere else with Duchene. He's a primadonna who is only concerned with his own stats. He's not a good defensive player, his effort sucks, he's not coachable, etc. His #1 worry is his own stats and his #2 worry is having a good time away from the rink. He will put up points and he will produce... but he's not going to be a guy who is a big time forechecker or willing to put his body on the line to win... or sacrifice personal accomplishments for the better of the team.

IMO there is a lot of risk bringing that type of player into a Cup contending team with a set culture (and has its own cracks).

This is a fair point. All in all, with everyone trying to dump cap I still think the Avalanche can look for creative trades like they have so far this summer.

If Duchene comes here cheap to play top 6 wing, I wouldn’t be against it because the fit is obvious on the ice. Somewhat. But it’s not a coincidence that locker rooms tend to improve after he leaves. I mean if your own GM buys you out to improve the culture the teams he’s playing on certainly aren’t the problem.

Well neither can G, yet his cap hit requires him having an outsized role.

Pass on trading G. He had his most productive season last season in a busted up team injury wise. Who says any forward we bring in will score the 37 odd points he scores? Rodrigues only scored 39, put it that way.

Also, as a PMD, his contract is top class. Absolute value for money. Coach Bednar plays him in many various roles, too.

Let's use the cap space we DO have (and possibly picks - although, this isn't my preference), and add to the team, by not putting a hole somewhere else in the team.

There's no reason to not trade him at 50% unless:

a) No team wanted him @ 4M X 3 (unlikely)

b) He wouldn't waive his NMC for the teams that wanted him (likely)

I don't buy the retention slot theory since buying him out hurts the team significantly more than losing an additional retention slot. Now he's on the book for 6 years instead of 3 and the cap penalty is higher than 4M in years 2 and 3.

Nichushkin [in Russian]: did you say ‘crack’? Where is it?

Duchene is certainly the best player in this free agent class now and he's going to cash in. He's getting ~15m of his ~20m left and is going to probably find a team willing to pay him 20m for 4 seasons. Probably the best thing possible for him financially just happened.
You can bet that he knew this and that's why he didn't waive his NMC. They couldn't trade him at 50%, he forced a buyout and in the end he's going to make even more money.

Plus he can pick his destination.

Smart.
