This should be some riveting stuff.

As the Avs sit with Colton, Byram, and Malgin (I don't think he'll be qualified) as RFAs to re-sign. The Avs have 15.5m with 7F-5D-2G. Say Byram and Colton take up $8m combined. That leaves the Avs with 7m for 4-5 forwards and 1 defensemen. If the accept Dermy as a float and don't go for an extra. They can spend ~3m on one player and round out with $1m deals elsewhere. Max is pretty much $4m on one guy and they'd have to go league min on the other 4. There might still be some cap clearing or the Avs may have to really work to trim Byram down... and they probably don't want to take the risk of an offersheet here.

So what you’re saying is give $1.25m to Helm. Got it, boss.

His QA is only $750k
If he gets qualified, he doesn't have to sign and can file for arbitration. If that happens, he's very unlikely to get an amount the Avs can walk around from (somewhere in the low to mid 4s), so even if he gets 2m in arbitration (and he has a case for it), they Avs have to accept and his cap hit becomes an issue. Avs likely avoid that by not qualifying him.

We’re talking about Malgin?

I'm hoping we can bridge Byram at around 4 million and get Colton signed around 3 million.

Shaving a million off your estimates. We'll see tho.

The opposite is more likely, Byram bridges around $3M and Colton signs for $4M on a 3-5 year deal.

But I say good luck convincing Bo to take a $3M deal even on a shorter bridge.

I still think Girard or another D is moved.

Reactions: Mighty Makar
The risk is with Byram after July 1, he is sitting there for any team with >5m cap space to try a 1st and 3rd offersheet that'd put the Avs in a rough spot. Vancouver will have that room too.

Gotta keep Toews to keep the window going.
In general I agree with this move. I still think Girard and a first can do a lot of damage in this market. Time to take advantage of some teams trying to dump players w/ cap to rebuild. Like I said earlier, look what got Hayes and Ryjo. Imagine what a 1st alone could do.

What kind of package could the two 1sts+Girard get us?
To the right team something pretty hefty, maybe even with retention for a year +.

Toews' new contract will be way too much. Stick with the cost controlled G and move Toews at the deadline or today.
If he wants to stay, I think they'll find a way to keep him. I also think we'll see an improved player in him. A lot of NHLer's after having their first kids have down years.

Assuming they don't move Behrens, I think they can fill some gaps on D with prospects too. I still think the Avalanche add another RD that will fit in the top 2 pairs before to long.

I’m going to go out on a whim and say avs draft with their picks today, with Colton and byram not signed they won’t have a clear idea of what else that can acquire and fit cap wise. Stennberg and molendyk. Free agency will be used to fill the rest of the roster.

Toews is do for a big payday. His pairing with Makar has also raised those numbers quite a bit. I don't think it'll be good for the Avs to be stuck with a Toews who already been on the decline the last two years, on the wrong side of 30 and is probably looking at a 9+ million a year deal.
