I don’t think they’re trading for Zadorov lol.
I do think signing Compher is becoming more and more likely though.

I think the Jets probably did as well as they could. Vilardi is a good pick up as long as his back holds up. Still, it's quality for quantity and as much as I like the quantity, I like PLD more.

Habs' inability to close the deal might've helped the Avs get that haul for Newhook.

Off-season will be ruined if we just sign compher. Not strong physically, doesn’t score many goals, bad playoff performer. Need a new identity in the bottom 6.

He really is a bad playoff performer:

Compher is coming off a career year when he registered 52 points, but he was badly exposed in Colorado’s first-round loss to the Seattle Kraken as he completely fell apart in the elevated role. Much was made of Colorado’s bottom six scoring zero goals in the series, but Compher registered just two points in the seven games despite playing more than 22 minutes per night.

I know, half the reason I played almost every NHL game since 96 until recently. Also why I ran a fantasy league, built the website and forum myself, paid for the domain and the hosting lol.

I smoked people in trades often, but we had some people that didn't watch hockey nearly as much as I did back then.
I still want luostarinen and Forsling

I don’t mind JTC as a 3rd liner. I prefer if we moved on, but he’s passable as a 3C.

Yeah, he wasn’t good last year, but the entire bottom 6 was ass. As of now, we have a chance to overhaul the entire bottom 6 even if LOC and JTC are part of it.

Kostin would be a nice piece for the 3rd line. I’d pay him 2-3 yr x 1-1.5 mil, he still has room to grow.

Yeah for all the hate JTC gets for his play as a 2C in the playoffs last year, those people tend to forget how well he performed as a 2C much deeper in the playoffs the previous year when Kadri got hurt.

Look he’s ideally not a 2C. But he’s a real good 3C. He had an amazing season last year. Yes the ending went downhill but isn’t it possible he simply ran out of gas? A short summer thanks to the cup win and then he still went on to play the 7th most minutes in the NHL last year. We’re talking hard defensive minutes too. Ones that got him top 15 in Selke voting.

I get not wanting to overpay him or commit to term. But if he’s willing to come back on a fair deal I’m shocked how many people are against that because of 7 playoff games.

I see your point of view and I see theirs.

I’ve already advocated that I’m ok with him as the 3C, so long as the contract is reasonable.

On the other hand, the part that bothers me most is Bednar. He seems to have incredible trust and faith in him. At even the slightest RyJo falter, JTC runs the risk of being jammed right back into that 2C spot.

But at least there is potential for something behind Compher this year (Johansen , others potentially acquired either via trade or FA (Drouin or wheeler for example)

It's a huge myth that JTC is a great 3C. The advanced stats were posted last summer and he makes everyone around him worse when he plays at center, even on the 3rd line.

JTC is a winger, that's where he is the best. He is a 3rd line winger.

The flames add Z as a sweetener when we trade for kadri. Make it happen CMAC!

How can you say that when the best hockey he’s played in his career was from the 2022 playoffs until about April of this year which was essentially played exclusively at centre?

I'd still be surprised if Colorado is able to re-sign Compher.

With $15.75 in cap space, remove ~$4M for Byram and ~$5M for Compher (conservatively). That leaves a little under $7M for (6) players.

Obviously things change if the Avalanche move money on the back end, but they weren't willing to do that last off-season for Kadri.

I think his good run ended closer to around February/March, but I agree, JTC played his best hockey at C.

He's not a perfect C but he's better at 3C than RW. He thinks the game in a more multi dimensional way at 3C. He's thinking about defense. He's thinking about passing. He's thinking about driving the net. He could be better and more consistent at them, but at least he's thinking the game that way.

At RW he's a lot more one dimensional, mostly just thinking about scoring goals, and he can get into a bad habit of just staying around the perimeter.

He's probably never going to be a big point producer in the NHL, so his path to being the best player he can, is to become more multi dimensional.

For a season or so it looked like he had that figured out, but then reverted back to what he was before. Might have run out of gas in the bigger role.

Still need either Bo, Toews, or G to get traded, IMO.

The defense is taking up too much cap space. Something's gotta give.

Roughly 15M left for six forwards, not counting what Bo gets.

My reasoning for getting rid of jtc is the same as many others.. We know bednar likes to use him.. In situations that are not a fit for him. Expectations only get higher with more money and I just want to see him elsewhere so bednar has to go with another damn option up the lineup lol
