4-3 in the final seven games (90 points) eliminates the Sabres, and forces the Devils to go 7-0 and the Penguins to go 5-1-1 to tie.

Just trying to game out likely results, 90 points seems like a 50-60% chance of making it and anything above makes playoffs pretty likely IMO.

Truly a cripple fight right now.

No.

7-0 in the final 7. Get back to playing like they did in January and February. Scare the shit out of whichever opponent they get in the first round.

then proceed get swept by a combined 4 game score of 72-5 after the nervous opponent runs Larkin at the start of game 1

that's the whole season distilled right there

With Washington both having a game in hand and having the same amount of points - and pitt having the same amount of games left and 3 less points, we want a regulation win for Pittsburgh.
Especially since we play both of those teams coming up, a Pitt regulation win puts our destiny back into our hands.

I can see that. I guess I was looking at it if Pitt wins... yeah, the Caps stay tied with us... but the Pens are still very much alive and I don't like that. I suppose that was where my "no great solution" came from. Mathematically you are correct, but I don't like having Crosby and Malkin staying on our heels.

Math reality tells you one thing, hockey reality brings unknowable environmental and other factors that pollute the math. Team A having X points with Y games remaining being more likely to finish ahead of Team B with their own X and Y values is pretty simplistic and could just as easily apply to tiddly winks or frisbee golf teams. What is SOS for remaining teams? Dispersion of H and A games and against whom? Are specific matchups more or less favorable than league standing might indicate? Which team has been better recently? Which team is fundamentally more talented and more capable of a winning streak? There's a long list of contributing and incalculable (or not worth taking the time to calculate) factors in addition to the degree of inherent play randomness.

It would not be too great a surprise if, at the end of the day, we discover a Washington win over Pittsburgh would have been the preferable result.

Last 2 games , we play against Montreal, they beating very good teams left and right.
Are we a "good" team?

Flyers beat some good teams, but lost to bad ones.
So long as it's not a three-point outcome between contenders, every game lost by them is a good result for Detroit. As is every home game lost or any loss to a non-contender. We can't expect all of them to lose every game. The target is probably 90-92 points and the fewer teams capable of getting to that number, the better.
3 points is the worst result.
Good God the goal diff for some of these teams...
Unbelievable. Caps -35.

Go penguins, go blue jackets tonight. Never thought in my life I’d cheer for the pens, but I guess there is a first time for everything.

Many are saying "if you knew at the beginning of the year that they'd be....."

Expectations change. A month ago they were 4 or 5 best in the Eastern Conference and now battling for 8.

My point is, this isn't the beginning of the year and they have stumbled mightily, and it wasn't (as many have said) because Larkin was out.

While I'm happy with TB win anyone with eyes would admit they were lucky to win. At times it looked like mites vs bantams. They still need to tighten up the defense A LOT!!!! And FFS stop missing the net with shots.

and I bet peoples expectations overall would have been pretty different with the knowledge that the Wings would sign Kane ~30 games in and that he would put up about a point per game for the other ~50 games after that

even just that makes that whole "beginning of the year" line rather silly

I'd rather them not scare the opponent in the first round. I'd much rather be underestimated because I am pretty sure we would have a much bigger chance to succeed (see florida last year with boston), even though I still think we get rocked in the first round (and I'm here for it)

Yes it was. Larkin being out pushes everybody up a line in the C room or shuffles the O lines. Guys like Copp or Compher playing well in their roles flail with more responsibility.

It would be that way if Raymond or Kane were out a long time too. The Wings kinda need everyone pitching in because they’re a depth team with few game breakers.

We will need 10-11 points in the last seven games to get in.

I don’t think we do. I think everyone battling for a spot just kinda meanders to the end. I don’t think we NEED to go 5–1-1 to make it.

Sorry, too many teams involved have too many games against playoff teams for me to think that anyone rips off a .750 or better in the last week

Yep, looking like 8 might be enough.

Win/Lose night. Caps lose, but Isles win. Only good thing is WSH used up their games in hand and we have a game at hand on the Isles.
