Now that the only two viable rental centers are off the market, Sweeney is either standing pat or gonna shock us all by acquiring a top 6 center with term/team control years left

Lol I'm so happy we didn't trade a first for Monahan. I'm good sitting out this deadline at the current prices.

Unless DeBrusk gets us a top 5 pick, which doesn't seem ridiculous based on what Monahan got.

Insert the pic of pasta and hertl standing next to each other on team mcdavid.

In a league where an aging Savard and Foligno have previously cost firsts, it should be no surprise that Monahan did too. It was never going to take anything less to convince the Habs to give him up, because if the Jets didn't offer it, someone else would have. Very small market for available even remotely capable top centers this year - Lindholm was the best, Monahan a somewhat distant second. But when there is not much else you will still pay for that.

I see no reason why Winnipeg should quibble over a first at this point. They have a good shot this year and those don't come around every day, especially for a team like the Jets. So by all means go for it, and go hard. The only question is whether Monahan is the right guy for them. Firstly because his play has declined since 2020, and even though he's arguably been better this year it's uncertain how much he can lift on a better team, second it seemed to me that what their top 6 really needed was an injection of sheer scoring talent, and I'm not sure if Sean is the guy for that.

So whether the Jets have chosen wisely, we'll see. But giving up a 1st for a player the calibre of Monahan is absolutely de rigueur.

I wouldn’t pay a first for him, but Winnipeg badly needed some help on the powerplay, and Monahan is strong there.
