Don’t think it matters. As long as the official deems that the player has made an attempt to direct the puck to a teammate, it counts as a hand pass. Probably so that one couldn’t intentionally bank it off a defender and have it count.

At least that’s my understanding. I could be very wrong.

IMO the rule needs to be fixed.

If a player takes a slapshot and it’s heading toward an opponents head and he puts his hand up to protect himself and the puck deflects to a teammate….that should not be a hand pass.

That call should be reserved for obvious direction of the puck to a teammmate.

Well this should get interesting very quickly:

No doubt this Bruins roster has some chinks in the armor. That said, who in the East is the team you are most worried about?

It sure as f*** isn’t the Rangers…. That team is spiraling.

That they are. Panthers are also on a 4-game losing streak, but for me it's still them and the Canes who are the most dangerous in the east. Not writing the Rangers off but they have quite a bit to sort out. Leafs aren't going to win the Cup but despite their issues I could still see them winning a series against just about anybody if their stars really fire for a few games and they get some sort of half-decent goaltending.

I totally agree with what you said above, but this was my initial reaction:

in this day and age we`d find out about him taking a leave to take care of himself but so unnecessary and typically a horrible HR practice to announce to everyone in this way that an employee is taking leave

I know how it was easy to say that the Rangers were “a machine” in the early part of the season given their record. But they were never as dominant as they were made out to be.

Shesterkin has had a really subpar year and much of their success has been on the back of Jonathan Quick’s sudden turnaround after years of decline. Can that realistically keep up and if it does, is it really going to power the Rangers through the Po’s?

Hand passes are allowed in the defensive zone, I think.

Yes.

My problem is that they adjusted the rule about kicking the puck in the net, so that now there needs to be a “distinct kicking motion” for a goal off a skate to be disallowed.

However, as we saw in the playoffs last year, if a puck simply glances off a players hand to a teammate, it is called a hand pass….even though there was no intent.

I understand what you're saying, but the problem is it then becomes up to the discretion of the officials..

Yes. But that’s how it is with “kicked” in goals.

Just looking for some consistency.

I think that 99% of the time it’s obvious weather or not a player intentionally directed the puck to a teammate with their hand as opposed to the puck just hitting their hand and ending up going to a teammate.
