Prospect Info: 2023 1st Rd Selection - #28 OA (via BOS, WSH) - C, Easton Cowan [London Knights, OHL; [Height 5.11 -- Weight 185]

When you get a scouting report that says “playoff value” “he’s a hockey guy” “he can play anywhere in your line-up” as a teenager it tells me they could’ve hit him a lot lower than they took him. When you’re drafting in the first round it should be about your individual skills. Not how you line up on a playoff junior roster

Just seems like the scouting report is lacking. Using the most basic terms “he’s a hockey guy” ok I hope so? “He can play anywhere in your lineup… again I hope so since he’s a first rounder.. he’s got playoff value… a third time I hope so cause he’s a first rounder

There was lots of talk about how he came on strong in the second half.

I went through London Kinghts box scores for the last 34 games of the 68 game OHL season and tallied Cowan's stats.

Cowan put up 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points in the final 34 games, versus 9 goals and 14 assists for 23 points in the first 34 games of the season.

Adding his playoff stats to his stats from the second half of the season, he had 20 goals and 31 assists for 51 points in his final 54 games including playoffs.

The numbers in the second half, while better than what he produced in the first half, are still not the kind of offensive production you would expect for a forward being drafted in the first round out of the OHL - especially one who is on the smaller side.

I like that scouts say he a puck-hound, hard working player, and that he showed up in the playoffs. I haven't watched any of the draft eligible players play enough to have an informed opinion on who we should/shouldn't have drafted, but hopefully Cowan becomes a good player for us.

Tyler Bertuzzi had 22 points in 43 games in his draft year, in the OHL. Detroit still picked him in the 2nd round. Sometimes a team is really confident about the projectability of a player and his raw toolset. By all accounts the Leafs feel that way about Cowan.

It means he works his ass off, doesn’t take a shift off, and knows where to be and what to do on the ice. He’s competitive in every facet of the game and he’ll do whatever it takes to win. There’s not a situation on the ice you don’t want him in.

To have that instilled in guys at 17 years old is rare. Those types of players that bring that energy and competitiveness to the game, especially when they have the skating and skill to match, are even more rare.

Leafs are banking on his production taking a significant jump next year as he continues on his current trajectory.

Neat I sure hope you didn't jinx him because he's a leafs first rounder

In what way?

I honestly don't remember Dubas ever drafting a single London Knight during his 5 years.
In the league generally, not the Leafs. Its kind of like in NBA drafting guys from Duke. Many good players still but some get overrated due to exposure.

Not too excited about this pick, I guess it's a gamble, so lets hope for the best

I didn't mind picking him, just feels like we could have moved down for 2 later picks and still got him in the 2nd round. It would have been a gamble I guess to leave him on the board if you were able to manufacture a deal that nets say a 2nd + 4th for our 1st

To me he looks like that 2nd-4th rounder you pick who ends up being a solid player which a lot of teams need to have to get far but we picked him in the 1st round. By the way he came on fast in the 2nd half and playoffs for London, I hope hes only a few years (1 OHL, 1 AHL) away from getting in the line up.
