I'm not sure how much Hughes has to do with the late round drafting.

But I also like Fowler and Hutson.

None of Hutson, Fowler or Engstrom are late round picks.

I would consider "late round picks" to be from the late 4th round (120th and later) to the 7th round. Engstrom was a late 3rd so he is not too far off from that but rounds 1-3 are valued trade assets and traded picks from the 4th and on always feel more like throw-ins to slightly tweak a deal or as a long shot asset that is flipped for a low depth player.

Yeah I wouldn't call them late round picks, even though I did. I was in the middle of appointments and didn't think of better terminology. I was talking about late firsts and on really. The point of the post was replying to a post praising Hughes for drafting Engstrom, Bogdan, and I think Davidson. At any rate, Hughes and Gorton probably deserve some credit for steering the conversation, but the scouting staff are the ones that for the most part find and present the players. But Hughes and Gorton were active at least when the NHL season ended. So hard to say how much credit they deserve.

At any rate, I'd rather just say the scouting department as a whole, of which Hughes and Gorton are responsible for, deserves credit if Engstrom, Hutson, Fowler, Davidson, etc.. pan out. But if we didn't draft well to start, that wouldn't necessarily mean Hughes can't draft well. It would more indicate to me that either he needs to change the personnel in the department, or he needs to change the way he and Gorton steer the process of arriving at a final list. We'll see how Slaf and Reinbacher pan out, two players HuGo seemed to be heavily involved in deciding on, as well as the late 1sts and on, who they seemed less involved in.

It feels like that euro combine is making a big difference.

Whoever had the idea deserves a raise.

Getting good players is the difference in Cup teams and playoff teams. Tampa doesn't win cups if not for Point, Kucherov, Palat. They gained a lot of depth players also. Cirelli, Killorn, Gourde, etc ..

That is the key, getting talent outside the 1st round is the difference between good/bad and exceptional team.

It's an area I always wanted to focus on. Seen so many players drafted late over the years. Even to the point I would hire a second set of scouts. specific scouts to focus solely on late round picks. Study Why did Roy slide to 3rd round. It should happen again. Why Langway 7th round. Why Chelios 2nd, Gallagher 5th round, and so on. Most every draft there is a future all-star drafted after 2Nd round.

It's hard to judge highly successful picks beyond the 1st round but there are some paterns. Most of the time, size and little visibility (outside the spotlight, smaller leagues), in some cases just gross negligence or stupidity (i.e. Kucherov and Kaprizov, they were not hidden talent teams were just scared to draft them because of their nationality and lack of ideal size)

Adam Engstrom and Bodgan Konyushkov, both looks oustanding D prospect's. People talk about Mesar over Kulich or Lambert but great job by scout's to grab that type of D's in 3rd and 4th round!
